Here’s a peek behind the curtain into golf’s sanctuary.

What clubs will Tiger Woods play at the Safeway Open?

Tiger_Woods_Arnold_Palmer

Have you heard this one? Tiger Woods is going to be gaming a TaylorMade driver, Mizuno irons, and a Bridgestone ball when he makes his return to professional golf at next week’s Safeway Open. So said NoLayingUp on Twitter. Not surprisingly, the claim, and the larger debate about what Woods will play in the wake of Nike’s imminent exit from the equipment space, has inspired a red-hot thread.

There have been more than 200 replies in just three days, so you’ll want to check this one out. See the thread.

Note: At 9:21 a.m. EST, Tiger Woods officially committed to play in the Safeway Open.

Reaction to Parnevik’s “Tiger is hitting like he did 15 years ago” claim

Jesper Parnevik

Jesper Parnevik got his shot in Golf Digest’s “My Shot,” and you’ll want to read what he had to say about how Tiger is hitting it as he prepares to return next week (spoiler: see the headline). Needless to say, the comment inspired both incredulity and a “fingers crossed” spirit.

See what WRXers have to say about Jesper’s remarks.

What to wear with solid black golf shoes?

walter-hagen-mens-golf-shoes-size-12-5-narrow-solid-black-leather-lace-up-ec902ed1d3d65e77bf15edda38135f43

Occasionally in FTF, we like to bring you some of the game’s eternal fashion conundrums (see: “Does anybody still wear khaki?”). This week: It’s user EmperorPenguin (there’s a joke in there somewhere about penguins wearing black shoes to match their black tuxedos) asking what he ought to wear with his solid black golf shoes.

To read the replies, or if you’re similarly confused yourself, see the thread.

The evolution of Ryder Cup fashion

RyderCupThursday2016

A commentary on how the U.S. Ryder Cup attire has improved since the awful/legendary shirts at Brookline in 1999 (yes, those shirts), quickly turned into a discussion about whether the team’s clothing should be made in America.

Interesting thread! Check it out.

Changes to the PGA Tour logo?

logo

As far as we can tell, Yahoo/Golf News Network’s Ryan Ballengee is the originator of this alteration to the PGA Tour’s logo featuring Arnold Palmer’s silhouette.

    My money is on Titleist.

I think it’s the right fit for Tiger and I’m sure signing up with them.

    Cheers

welcome back kid. if it wasn’t football season and baseball playoffs, ratings would be huge if he’s on primetime coverage over the weekend

Why would he have to change clubs. He probably stocked up on 20 of each club he uses. He’s only switching once he’s announced a endorsement deal.

Why would he play 3 tournaments this year with Nike clubs, just to change them out at the beginning of next year?

Tiger will be using his same old Nike set up but putting with his old trusty Scotty NP2 (GSS)… for now.

Tiger will play what he likes until his agent makes a club deal and then he’ll play whatever makes him the most money.. Look at the crap he played with for years. Can you imagine what he could do with Mizuno or Titleist irons and a choice of T-made or Callaway woods?

I thought Parnevic hated Eldrick’s guts for what he did to Elin? Why does he care how Eldrick swings?

Time heals all wounds. A lot has happened in 7 years. They play golf together a lot now.

He’s been irrelevant for a while. Just gettimg his name in.

Makes sense….His Endo Forged Mizunos made him famous, Bridgestone MADE his TW balls (the ones he could control)

and TM will pay ANYONE – ANYONE to tee off in ANYTHING with one of their ‘woods’

I’d love to see Arnie’s silhouette on the PGA Tour logo. Also, I doubt Tiger will change his bag for the Safeway, but I’m curious if he’ll make major changes to his bag for 2017.

    • Justin

      Oct 7, 2016 at 9:40 am

100% with you on this one. Doubt he is blowing up his entire bag for his very first tournament back.

How would you know what he’ll decide? Every manufacturer has throw their stuff at him to test. He could show up with a WRX chip marker and a bag full of mishmash stuff like us!!!! That would be so cool

          Oct 7, 2016 at 7:25 pm

Tiger is not a equipment whore. He really old school and traditional. x100’s with a blade. small driver head and comfy wedges. Hes not the type to tinker around with high tech shit. I would say hes more concerned with the ball. If i was Tiger’s agent, i would tell him not to sign an equipment deal and play whatever you want. What is a club deal to a billionaire. A 50 million dollar bag sponsor is nice and fill it with your preference.

            Except he’ll be playing a M2 driver.

To honor and respect “the King” I hope the PGA is smart enough to leave the logo alone and make it a permanent honor to the man that made golf a popular sport for the masses.

        Oct 7, 2016 at 4:43 pm

The PGA logo is not of Arnie, it isn’t a depiction of anyone. Just a generic golf silhouette. I’m not following you on how changing the logo would disrespect Palmer, especially when people want the logo to change TO a silhouette of Arnie.

    • Jim

      Oct 7, 2016 at 5:01 pm

The ‘reverse C’ is a lousy finish anyway…unnecessary with better current biomechanics…

Arnie’s silhouette is too cool. It’s a keeper for sure!

What GolfWRXers are saying about Titleist’s TSR2 7 wood

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing Titleist’s TSR2 7 wood. WRXer ‘manima1’ is taking his first dive into the 7 wood market, and wants to hear how our members have enjoyed the club from Titleist.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • BigUrsus: “i have. spun like a lob wedge and peaked at 160′ height.”
  • nitram: “I’ve had one for a little over a year. I bought it to replace an Exotics CB2 (2007) as balls hit with modern 7WD’s are flying further. I have it lofted down (C-1) and have basically replaced my 5WD with it. It covers the gap I need and is easier to hit well. I recently tested the TSR2 & 3, 4 and 7WD’s as well, and I prefer the TSi’s.”
  • Lobber: “Put a 7 wood in the bag in the beginning of the year.  Stealth 7 Wood, Ventus Velocore 7 Red.  Love it!  Have not hit the TSR2 7 wood but am gaming the Driver and it’s fantastic.”

Long irons vs hybrids for the better player – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing whether long irons or hybrids are the optimal choice for the better player.

WRXer ‘MikeDeJong33’ plays off a 3 handicap and is considering switching out a long iron for a hybrid or crossover, and our members have been sharing their advice and experiences in our forum.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • Lumpy930: “I made the switch earlier this year and dropped a 4 iron. Hybrid is easier to launch high and provides more versatility for me. It takes some adjustment but getting better with high cuts for approach shots and a flatter shot for tee shots. One handicap for reference with 110mph driver swing speed, and I just didn’t feel like I had enough speed to properly hit 4 iron and the hybrid has been great. 27* 5 iron and a Titleist hybrid playing at 25*.”
  • jvincent: “I will offer the counter opinion. I still have a 4i in the bag. Am I less consistent with it than I would be with a 4H? Probably. But I have much better trajectory control with the 4i than I do with my 3H. If I need to hit a low one, especially when I have to go under tree branches (hey, it happens), I’m typically reaching for the 4i.”
  • outnumbered: “I made the switch to hybrids to replace 3&4 irons a couple of years ago and am in the search for 5 iron replacement this offseason. The yardage gaps have leveled back out and allow for a higher landing angle helping to hold greens. I am a 6 index, have similar yardages, and am old enough to feel no shame with a bouquet of head covers if they help me score better. I am scared that I will someday need to replace 6 iron as that is my low escape “elite punch out” club.”
  • jomatty: “It was a no-brainer for me. My handicap is similar to yours, and I’m just not fast enough to gap a 4 iron properly with my 5 iron (and that’s not even talking about the ones I clank)… It goes further but carries about the same, which makes it difficult to judge. Going to a 4 hybrid gave me much more consistent distance control and much more confidence that every 200ish shot will be reasonable. The misses are just much more consistent. The trick for me is finding one that doesn’t go left. Some just seem not to behave with my swing.”

Spotted: Callaway 2+ Mini Driver hits USGA conforming list (Phil Mickelson’s ‘mystery 2-wood’?)

Published

on

This week, Callaway’s 2+ Mini Driver landed on the USGA conforming list.

The blacked out new addition features a distinct lack of branding, a Flash Face SS22, weight port, wing-style shape on the sole with a recessed cavity at the rear of the sole.

The club contains 2+ Tour etched on the head and has a loft of 10.5-degrees, with our members speculating that it is a protoype of the  ‘mystery 2-wood’ that Phil Mickelson had in the bag back in 2020 during The Match 3.

Here’s what our members have been saying about the new Callaway 2+ Mini Driver, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • RCGA: “Interesting the loft is 10.5*. Must be some sort of smaller head, higher headweight to fit you into a 43.5-44″ shaft.”
  • Lemonade: “Let’s hope this isn’t a tour only offering.”
  • Viper4425: “This club looks really good. but just curious, would someone be carrying this in addition to a driver? is this supposed to take place of a 3 wood?”
