FTF: What clubs will Tiger Woods play at the Safeway Open?

The GolfWRX forums exist so golfers have access to the latest equipment releases, hottest discussions, real equipment reviews, best instruction, new technologies and everything golf you can imagine. So if you love golf, the GolfWRX forums are your sanctuary.

In the From the Forums weekly feature, we bring you the hottest, most buzz-worthy topics from our forums for your convenience. I’ll be your trusty tour guide to navigate the latest buzz.

Here’s a peek behind the curtain into golf’s sanctuary.

What clubs will Tiger Woods play at the Safeway Open?

Have you heard this one? Tiger Woods is going to be gaming a TaylorMade driver, Mizuno irons, and a Bridgestone ball when he makes his return to professional golf at next week’s Safeway Open. So said NoLayingUp on Twitter. Not surprisingly, the claim, and the larger debate about what Woods will play in the wake of Nike’s imminent exit from the equipment space, has inspired a red-hot thread.

There have been more than 200 replies in just three days, so you’ll want to check this one out. See the thread.

Note: At 9:21 a.m. EST, Tiger Woods officially committed to play in the Safeway Open.

Reaction to Parnevik’s “Tiger is hitting like he did 15 years ago” claim

Jesper Parnevik

Jesper Parnevik got his shot in Golf Digest’s “My Shot,” and you’ll want to read what he had to say about how Tiger is hitting it as he prepares to return next week (spoiler: see the headline). Needless to say, the comment inspired both incredulity and a “fingers crossed” spirit.

See what WRXers have to say about Jesper’s remarks.

What to wear with solid black golf shoes?

Occasionally in FTF, we like to bring you some of the game’s eternal fashion conundrums (see: “Does anybody still wear khaki?”). This week: It’s user EmperorPenguin (there’s a joke in there somewhere about penguins wearing black shoes to match their black tuxedos) asking what he ought to wear with his solid black golf shoes.

To read the replies, or if you’re similarly confused yourself, see the thread.

The evolution of Ryder Cup fashion

A commentary on how the U.S. Ryder Cup attire has improved since the awful/legendary shirts at Brookline in 1999 (yes, those shirts), quickly turned into a discussion about whether the team’s clothing should be made in America.

Interesting thread! Check it out.

Changes to the PGA Tour logo?

As far as we can tell, Yahoo/Golf News Network’s Ryan Ballengee is the originator of this alteration to the PGA Tour’s logo featuring Arnold Palmer’s silhouette.

Like an alarm? A smoke detector? Maybe a lie detector?
      What type of sensor?

    My money is on Titleist.

I think it’s the right fit for Tiger and I’m sure signing up with them.

welcome back kid. if it wasn’t football season and baseball playoffs, ratings would be huge if he’s on primetime coverage over the weekend

  7. DJ

    Oct 7, 2016 at 3:51 pm

Why would he have to change clubs. He probably stocked up on 20 of each club he uses. He’s only switching once he’s announced a endorsement deal.

Why would he play 3 tournaments this year with Nike clubs, just to change them out at the beginning of next year?

Tiger will be using his same old Nike set up but putting with his old trusty Scotty NP2 (GSS)… for now.

Respect fellow WRXers and have a great weekend!

Tiger will play what he likes until his agent makes a club deal and then he’ll play whatever makes him the most money.. Look at the crap he played with for years. Can you imagine what he could do with Mizuno or Titleist irons and a choice of T-made or Callaway woods?

I thought Parnevic hated Eldrick’s guts for what he did to Elin? Why does he care how Eldrick swings?

Time heals all wounds. A lot has happened in 7 years. They play golf together a lot now.

He’s been irrelevant for a while. Just gettimg his name in.

Makes sense….His Endo Forged Mizunos made him famous, Bridgestone MADE his TW balls (the ones he could control)

and TM will pay ANYONE – ANYONE to tee off in ANYTHING with one of their ‘woods’

I’d love to see Arnie’s silhouette on the PGA Tour logo. Also, I doubt Tiger will change his bag for the Safeway, but I’m curious if he’ll make major changes to his bag for 2017.

    • Justin

      Oct 7, 2016 at 9:40 am

100% with you on this one. Doubt he is blowing up his entire bag for his very first tournament back.

      • N

        Oct 7, 2016 at 2:02 pm

How would you know what he’ll decide? Every manufacturer has throw their stuff at him to test. He could show up with a WRX chip marker and a bag full of mishmash stuff like us!!!! That would be so cool

        • otto

          Oct 7, 2016 at 7:25 pm

Tiger is not a equipment whore. He really old school and traditional. x100’s with a blade. small driver head and comfy wedges. Hes not the type to tinker around with high tech shit. I would say hes more concerned with the ball. If i was Tiger’s agent, i would tell him not to sign an equipment deal and play whatever you want. What is a club deal to a billionaire. A 50 million dollar bag sponsor is nice and fill it with your preference.

          • TMBurner2.0

            Oct 9, 2016 at 3:15 am

            Except he’ll be playing a M2 driver.

      Oct 7, 2016 at 10:12 am

To honor and respect “the King” I hope the PGA is smart enough to leave the logo alone and make it a permanent honor to the man that made golf a popular sport for the masses.

      • Joshuaplaysgolf

        Oct 7, 2016 at 4:43 pm

The PGA logo is not of Arnie, it isn’t a depiction of anyone. Just a generic golf silhouette. I’m not following you on how changing the logo would disrespect Palmer, especially when people want the logo to change TO a silhouette of Arnie.

    • Jim

      Oct 7, 2016 at 5:01 pm

The ‘reverse C’ is a lousy finish anyway…unnecessary with better current biomechanics…

Arnie’s silhouette is too cool. It’s a keeper for sure!

What are the best Srixon irons? – GolfWRXers discuss

In our forums, our members have been discussing Srixon irons. WRXer ‘dgarland’ wants to know what our members feel are the best recent Srixon irons but doesn’t want blades included in the conversation. Our members have been sharing their picks in our forum.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • MMB1500: “745s all day. I still play my set frequently, despite also having the ZX-5s.”
  • dmeeksDC: “I like the clean look of the 745 the most, and the performance can’t be beaten.”
  • BCULaw: “Z785 for me. It was just a perfect blend of forged feel with unexpected distance and forgiveness. I had a set of z745s and two sets of zx7s. Both were really nice sets, but I enjoyed the 785s more and played better golf with them.”
  • T.B.: “The 585 are basically point and shoot for me. Very predictable. I’ve hit lots of irons trying to find something better and just keep going back to these. All that said, lol, I have plans on this winter finding some ZX5 heads and shafting them up.”

Best blades on the market today? – GolfWRXers discuss

In our forums, our members have been discussing current blades on the market. WRXer ‘MrMccormack’ is on the hunt for a new set of irons and kicks off the thread saying:

“In the market for a new set of blades, and I figured I’d gauge the thoughts from you all. To start – I am not a fan of any major OEM’s current blade model. Mizuno, Taylormade, Titleist…you name it. I’m obviously being picky here, but who isn’t looking for the perfect shape?

I’ve started looking at JDM options, including Seven, Fujimoto, Kyeoi, Epon, etc. I’ve had a set of Miura 001’s, but I couldn’t stand the sole. The Seven MBs look perfect, but I think we all know about the price tag.

Curious about your opinions on the matter. Thanks for your help in advance!”

And our members have been sharing their thoughts and suggestions in our forum.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • stephenmatt: “The Mizuno Pro 221s are the best looking, in my opinion.”
  • Lucho8: “Wilson Staff Blades.”
  • bodhi555: “If I had to get some new blades, I’d arrange a demo session with the following: Titleist 620 MB: Have tried them before and loved the feel and consistency. Not the softest blades known to man, but they perform well. – TM P7-TW: My assumption on these is that they’re the VR Pros with a TM badge on them, hence a fantastic set of irons. Heavier on price than the others, but I suspect I’d like them the most. -Ping Blueprint: Haven’t hit them, but I love the look of them, plus like the troll aspect of my first proper set of Pings (not hand-me-downs) being a set of blades. I’d also probably try some ZX Forged and the latest Vega have to offer just for reference purposes.”
  • KingTitus: “Currently gaming Callaway Apex MB 21’s. Great iron with a ton of forgiveness. Despite them producing great numbers for me, I continue to toy with the idea of putting a set of Miura MB-101s in the bag. Titleist 620MB’s are gorgeous as well.”

At what point is playing blades an advantage? – GolfWRXers discuss

In our forums, our members have been talking blades. WRXer ‘Douglsss’ poses an intriguing question, “at what point is playing blades an advantage?” and kicks off the thread, saying:

“All things being equal – loft, lie, etc. – If I have a level of ballstriking to where playing blades vs player distance vs GI irons clubs each have similar average distances, why wouldn’t you play blades? IMO – easier to work multiple trajectories, easier to remove spin, better consistency( no hot faces ).

Another argument could be made that in this scenario – what are you losing in the scoring clubs, say 8i – PW, by not using a bladed club?”

And our members have been responding in their numbers.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • Thebiles: “Considering that the majority of pros are moving away from pure blades, I don’t think there is an advantage given today’s technology.”
  • llewol007: “Your argument is watered down because you ultimately got rid of the big differences in playing a blade versus a player distance and game improvement. That is the main reason most would or would not play a blade. So the comparison is really not comparing. If all things are equal as you say, it just becomes personal preference.”
  • AsianGolfer1995: “It’s mostly personal preference at this point, but for most of the blade users I’ve played with, they want their mishits coming up short of the target instead of flying 3-5 yards longer so they know what a true ‘miss’ feels like so they can work on it in practice to hit the center more.”
  • Red4282: “Advantages of blades would be thinner soles and generally less bounce. Flighting becomes a little easier. Distance control is more consistent on good to slight misses. You really don’t see much advantages from GI irons until you get to the mid and long irons and on bad misses.”
