FTF: What clubs will Tiger Woods play at the Safeway Open?
The GolfWRX forums exist so golfers have access to the latest equipment releases, hottest discussions, real equipment reviews, best instruction, new technologies and everything golf you can imagine. So if you love golf, the GolfWRX forums are your sanctuary.
In the From the Forums weekly feature, we bring you the hottest, most buzz-worthy topics from our forums for your convenience. I’ll be your trusty tour guide to navigate the latest buzz.
Here’s a peek behind the curtain into golf’s sanctuary.
What clubs will Tiger Woods play at the Safeway Open?
Have you heard this one? Tiger Woods is going to be gaming a TaylorMade driver, Mizuno irons, and a Bridgestone ball when he makes his return to professional golf at next week’s Safeway Open. So said NoLayingUp on Twitter. Not surprisingly, the claim, and the larger debate about what Woods will play in the wake of Nike’s imminent exit from the equipment space, has inspired a red-hot thread.
There have been more than 200 replies in just three days, so you’ll want to check this one out. See the thread.
Note: At 9:21 a.m. EST, Tiger Woods officially committed to play in the Safeway Open.
Reaction to Parnevik’s “Tiger is hitting like he did 15 years ago” claim
Jesper Parnevik got his shot in Golf Digest’s “My Shot,” and you’ll want to read what he had to say about how Tiger is hitting it as he prepares to return next week (spoiler: see the headline). Needless to say, the comment inspired both incredulity and a “fingers crossed” spirit.
See what WRXers have to say about Jesper’s remarks.
What to wear with solid black golf shoes?
Occasionally in FTF, we like to bring you some of the game’s eternal fashion conundrums (see: “Does anybody still wear khaki?”). This week: It’s user EmperorPenguin (there’s a joke in there somewhere about penguins wearing black shoes to match their black tuxedos) asking what he ought to wear with his solid black golf shoes.
To read the replies, or if you’re similarly confused yourself, see the thread.
The evolution of Ryder Cup fashion
A commentary on how the U.S. Ryder Cup attire has improved since the awful/legendary shirts at Brookline in 1999 (yes, those shirts), quickly turned into a discussion about whether the team’s clothing should be made in America.
Interesting thread! Check it out.
Changes to the PGA Tour logo?
As far as we can tell, Yahoo/Golf News Network’s Ryan Ballengee is the originator of this alteration to the PGA Tour’s logo featuring Arnold Palmer’s silhouette.

From the Forums: How are you liking TaylorMade’s Qi10 fairway woods?
In our forums, our members have been discussing TaylorMade’s new Qi10 fairway woods. WRXer ‘ace036’ plans on testing them in the next few weeks, saying: “from how they look from address and frame the ball is much more appealing to my eye versus my current Paradym fairway woods.” And our members have been sharing their positive feedback in our forum.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- Edwardsr: “I got fit into the Qi10 core model with Ventus TR Black 8X and it’s absolutely amazing for me.During the fitting with my 12-15 swings with it, it was the most efficient combo I’ve ever tested, tons of 1.48 smash and 3 or 4 1.49 smash (which I don’t think I’ve ever gotten on 3 wood on a launch monitor).”
- MiloMalt: “No complaints and so far only high praise for my Qi10 Tour 3 and 5 wood. I’m getting great numbers and a nice penetrating ball flight with great height whereas with my old TSi2 4 wood it was spinny and ballooning and short because of that.”
- courcy75: “The Qi10 Tour 3 wood I just put in play has been outstanding for me. Finally found something I like as much as the 07 burner tp.”

From the Forums: Should I play a 3-wood or 5-wood?
In our forums, our members have been discussing 3-woods, 5-woods and bag setups. WRXer ‘Cole Fleming’ is currently unsure of his setup, and reached out to fellow members, saying:
“Thoughts on people playing 3 vs 5-wood? I have a high SS 118 with driver 280s + carry. I really never use my 3-wood now as my course doesn’t really have the need unless I move to the back tees. I usually carry it about 260+. I’m ultimately looking for something easier to hit and maybe start trying to use it off the tee some to keep me out of trouble.
I also play a 7-wood. Love it so don’t want them to be to0 close. Ive never even considered or looked at a 5-wood. I have a fitting today so I’m sure I could test them, but wanted somewhat of an idea going into it to tell the fitter so I’m not swinging so many clubs.”
And our members have been sharing their thoughts on the matter, as well as mentioning what has worked best for their game.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- pu_golf88: “I’m dropping the 3 wood this year for a 5 wood. I hit my drivers a similar distance as you and find that my 3 wood isn’t a fairway finder, I really only use it if there’s a dogleg where a driver would go thru where I want to land the ball. I think a 5 wood goes far enough to use it as a fairway finder off the tee when I want more distance than hitting my 3 driving iron.”
- T626G: “I myself have decided to try a 5-wood. Never really had much luck or need with a 3-wood. Should be easier to hit. I’m going to cut it down a 1/2″ just to help control it and swing easier.”
- jedc: “Adjustable 5-wood turned down to 4-wood loft (and open looking face is nice). I had a fitting last month and really liked the PXG Black Ops 5-wood.”

My money is on Titleist.
I think it’s the right fit for Tiger and I’m sure signing up with them.

Why would he have to change clubs. He probably stocked up on 20 of each club he uses. He’s only switching once he’s announced a endorsement deal.

Why would he play 3 tournaments this year with Nike clubs, just to change them out at the beginning of next year?

Tiger will play what he likes until his agent makes a club deal and then he’ll play whatever makes him the most money.. Look at the crap he played with for years. Can you imagine what he could do with Mizuno or Titleist irons and a choice of T-made or Callaway woods?

I thought Parnevic hated Eldrick’s guts for what he did to Elin? Why does he care how Eldrick swings?

He’s been irrelevant for a while. Just gettimg his name in.
Makes sense….His Endo Forged Mizunos made him famous, Bridgestone MADE his TW balls (the ones he could control)
and TM will pay ANYONE – ANYONE to tee off in ANYTHING with one of their ‘woods’

I’d love to see Arnie’s silhouette on the PGA Tour logo. Also, I doubt Tiger will change his bag for the Safeway, but I’m curious if he’ll make major changes to his bag for 2017.

100% with you on this one. Doubt he is blowing up his entire bag for his very first tournament back.

How would you know what he’ll decide? Every manufacturer has throw their stuff at him to test. He could show up with a WRX chip marker and a bag full of mishmash stuff like us!!!! That would be so cool

Tiger is not a equipment whore. He really old school and traditional. x100’s with a blade. small driver head and comfy wedges. Hes not the type to tinker around with high tech shit. I would say hes more concerned with the ball. If i was Tiger’s agent, i would tell him not to sign an equipment deal and play whatever you want. What is a club deal to a billionaire. A 50 million dollar bag sponsor is nice and fill it with your preference.

To honor and respect “the King” I hope the PGA is smart enough to leave the logo alone and make it a permanent honor to the man that made golf a popular sport for the masses.

The PGA logo is not of Arnie, it isn’t a depiction of anyone. Just a generic golf silhouette. I’m not following you on how changing the logo would disrespect Palmer, especially when people want the logo to change TO a silhouette of Arnie.
Jim

The ‘reverse C’ is a lousy finish anyway…unnecessary with better current biomechanics…
Arnie’s silhouette is too cool. It’s a keeper for sure!
