Wilson’s C200 irons are full of holes, and that’s by design

Published

on

Wilson’s new C200 irons unveil a radical new construction to help mid-to-high handicap golfers hit their irons farther. It’s called FLX Face, and it uses nine urethane-filled Power Holes positioned around the perimeter of the club face to allow the club faces to flex more at impact.

Here’s how it works. The patent-pending FLX Face technology limits contact points (the red areas in the image below) between the C200’s faces and their bodies to 24 percent, leaving more than three quarters of the face untethered. Both the club faces and club heads are cast from 17-4 stainless steel, a strong, flexible material that allows for the unique geometries and flexibility of the very thin club faces.

The resultant gaps between the club faces and club bodies, called Power Holes, would allow air and debris to pass from one end of the club head through to the other if they weren’t filled with TE031 Urethane.

According to Michael Vrska, Global Innovation Director for Wilson Golf, the company worked with several different materials before selecting TE031 Urethane, which allows for maximum face deflection while still getting the look, sound, feel and durability Wilson wanted.

The C200 irons ($799 for 4-PW, GW) come stock with KBS Tour 90 steel shafts (R, S flexes). The graphite option ($899) is Aldila’s new Rogue Pro (A, R and S flexes). They’ll be in stores Jan. 8, and can be ordered now from Wilson’s website.

Did you know? The C in C200 stands for “Crossover,” which describes a golfer Wilson defines as a mid-to-high handicapper seeking distance and accuracy, but in a a more playable, midsize offering.
