Here are the 10 toughest putting greens…and Augusta is only third

Published

on

Much chat, but what influence are the greens at this week’s Farmers Insurance? Well it appears the bumpy poa annua surfaces have quite a say.

In 2017, the highly efficient putter that is Brandt Snedeker, spoke of the Torrey putting surfaces, saying

”I love poa annua so I think I have an advantage on poa annua because, for whatever reason, I’ve always putted really well out here. I have a patience level to be able to do it. I’ve always putted really well on bent. For whatever reason I’ve struggled on bermuda a little bit. I have a tough time reading grain even though I grew up on bermuda greens, too those have kind of been my weak links, I guess. I struggled in Hawaii this year. I seem to struggle there every year putting for whatever reason. But I think poa is my favorite surface to be on. To love poa, you’ve got to love days like today where you hit good putts and they don’t go in and that’s just part of it. ”

A year later, subsequent three-time PGA tour winner Hudson Swafford commented at the 2018 CareerBuilder that,”I kind of struggled after the win a little bit, nothing with the win, it was just kind of struggled, I kind of struggled on the West Coast poa, I’ve done that my whole career so fortunately this year I get to take a few of those events off.”

Clearly a definitive factor in picking the right players for the week, Data Golf analyzed the last few years and came up with a list of the most difficult greens on which to putt – Torrey appears twice in their top-10 list among Augusta, Pebble Beach and Glen Abbey.

Unsurprisingly, Winged Foot, scene of the 2006 and 2020 U.S Opens, is top of the tree but it’s a list well worth looking into for all upcoming events on the bumpy surfaces.

Five years on from Sneds’s quote, it seems they’ve still got to love the days where you hit good putts and they don’t go in.

Published

Over the weekend at the Valspar Championship, Hayden Buckley was getting ready to hit a shot on the par 4 12th hole at Copperhead when a rowdy fan yelled in his backswing.

Despite having to step off, Buckey was able to get up-and-down for par to remain at -3, which at the time on Saturday was seven shots behind the leader, Keith Mitchell.

On X, comments replying to the video seemed to think Buckley had time to reset following the shout, while others inferred gambling had something to do with the incident.
