Rory McIlroy urges Ryder Cup eligibility rules to be re-written following Rahm’s LIV move

Now that Jon Rahm has officially joined LIV Golf, questions are beginning to arise surrounding the Spaniard in terms of Ryder Cup eligibility.
In Rome, any player who joined LIV Golf was not allowed to be a part of the European team. Henrik Stenson was stripped of his captaincy. European legends such as Sergio Garcia, Ian Poulter and Lee Westwood were not allowed near the team as players or assistant captains.

At the time, Rory McIlroy was in favor of the ban, and spoke harshly about the players not allowed to be a part of the Ryder Cup.
“They are going to miss being here (Rome) more than we’re missing them,” McIlroy said back in September.
However, now that the player in question is Jon Rahm, Rory is changing his tune.
While speaking to Sky Sports News, McIlroy said,
“Jon is going to be in Bethpage in 2025. Because of this decision, the European tour is going to have to rewrite the rules for Ryder Cup eligibility. There’s absolutely no question about that – I certainly want Jon Rahm on the next Ryder Cup team.”
“I’m going to miss competing against him week in, week out. He has got so much talent, he’s so tenacious and he’s a great team-mate in the Ryder Cup.
“The thing that I’ve realized is that you can’t judge someone for making a decision that they feel is the best thing for them.”

The Northern Irishman was active this morning on X, responding to comment that questioned why he’d changed his mind since Rome.
Which is very true… we didn’t NEED any of the others in Rome and we didn’t miss them. We’d certainly miss and need Jon at Bethpage.

Rory and Sergio Garcia had a falling out due to Garcia’s decision to join LIV back in 2022. It seems as if he’s taking a different approach with the latest Spaniard who’s left the PGA Tour.

The New York Jets’ star cornerback, Sauce Gardner, has caught the golf bug.
The former fourth overall pick has been posting his golf swing on his X all week.
This drive just went 240+ and straight, but it looks like I’m hitting an iron(form wise) and not a driver. Drop tips below pic.twitter.com/MHKokGCEck

Mind y’all, this is only week 2 of me golfing and I don’t go to lessons. All my technique comes directly from PGA Tour’s YouTube channel and the golfers playing in it??
— SAUCE GARDNER (@iamSauceGardner) June 27, 2024
TaylorMade then took notice of Gardner’s sudden golf addiction and got him “dialed”.

The reigning U.S. Open champion, Bryson DeChambeau, also caught wind of Gardner’s newfound passion. With his massive following and growing YouTube channel, Bryson would be a logical fit to make some content with Sauce.

Lee Westwood takes aim at ‘young guys’ over pace of play during practice rounds
![](https://www.golfwrx.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/Screenshot-2024-06-27-at-10.56.58.png)
Lee Westwood is playing on the senior circuit for the first time in his career this week at the U.S. Senior Open. The 50-year-old became eligible on his birthday last April when he turned 50.
Westwood enters the senior major championship in good form, finishing 3rd in his most recent start at LIV Nashville. While speaking prior to the event this week, the Englishman said he’s enjoying the atmosphere so far. He’s also enjoying the fact that the pace of play seems to be better with the older players.
“I’m looking forward to this week and looking forward to the first couple of rounds, playing with a couple of old friends, Miguel [Angel Jimenez] and Jerry Kelly.
“Practice rounds out here are way faster than everywhere else. It’s such a joy, and it’s so refreshing to play nine holes in two hours in a practice round. It’s incredible.
“If the old guys can do it, why can’t the young guys do it?”
Westy added that his game is in “very good shape.”
“I’m hitting the ball well, hitting it a long way. Putting’s good, which it has to be to contend in tournaments no matter where you play.”
Westwood will aim to become the second consecutive LIV player to win a senior major after Richard Bland won the Senior PGA Championship last month.

LIV Golf streaming partner shuts down citing lack of profitability
![](https://www.golfwrx.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/Screenshot-2022-08-29-at-16.37.03.png)
Caffeine TV, which was the home of live streaming for Friday rounds of LIV Golf in some countries, decided to shut down its service on Wednesday.
— Caffeine (@caffeine) June 26, 2024
The post mentions that a lack of profitability is the reason behind the decision.
As X user “Danby” points out, there are plenty of other ways to watch LIV Golf, including YouTube and the LIV Golf+ app.
I’ve watched nearly every event, and I don’t know what caffeine TV is. I watch exclusively through YouTube and LIV Golf+
It’s a medium for viewing that was inferior to LIV’s own system, which remains unchanged from this. Odd headline.
— Danby (@Danbyrigs) June 26, 2024
Keith Hirshland, who is one of LIV’s television producers, added that Caffeine was just one of “many” streaming partners.
