The top-10 drivers ever made…according to ChatGPT

Published

on

First off, this article is not meant to be a recommendation of what driver you should buy. This purely for entertainment.

If you want advice from real professional golf fitters on what drivers to buy, check out the GolfWRX Best Driver of 2023. Or, if you want information on some of the best used drivers on the current market, check out our latest Modern Classics video series.

That being said, I had a conversation with ChatGPT earlier today about golf, and I wanted to share some of its answers. (In case you don’t know, ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence chatbot that was introduced in November 2022).

First, I needed to get ChatGPT’s opinion on its own credibility.

So, I asked ChatGPT how it formulates answers to the questions I ask, to which it responded, “As an AI language model, I have access to a vast database of information and knowledge that I use to generate responses to you questions. I analyze the context of your query and try to provide the most relevant and accurate information available.”

I then asked ChatGPT, straight up, “Are you trustworthy?”

ChatGPT, in its own defense, said, “As an AI language model, I strive to provide accurate and unbiased information to the best of my ability. However, it is important to remember that I am a machine and my responses are based on the data available to me. It is always advisable to cross-check information from multiple sources to ensure accuracy. Ultimately, it is up to the user to determine the trustworthiness of the information provided.”

OK, fair enough.

Let’s test this thing out.

Next, I asked ChatGPT, “What are the top-5 golf courses in the world?”

Here was its response:

“The best golf course in the world is a highly subjective topic and can vary based on personal preferences and opinions. However, there are several golf courses that are widely considered to be among the best in the world based on factors such as design, beauty, history, and difficulty. Here are a few examples:

1. Augusta National Golf Club: Home of the Masters tournament, Augusta National is considered by many to be the most prestigious golf course in the world. The course features beautiful landscaping, challenging holes, and a rich history dating back to the 1930s.

2. Pine Valley Golf Club: Located in New Jersey, Pine Valley is known for its challenging layout and scenic beauty. The course is situated on sandy terrain and features numerous hazards and difficult greens.

3. St. Andrews Links: Known as the “home of golf,” St. Andrews is a historic course located in Scotland that has been in play since the 15th century. The course is known for its challenging links-style layout and stunning coastal views.

4. Royal County Down Golf Club: Located in Northern Ireland, Royal County Down is considered by many to be the best course in the United Kingdom. The course features dramatic terrain, challenging holes, and stunning views of the surrounding mountains and coastline.

5. Pebble Beach Golf Links: Located in California, Pebble Beach is a stunning course that features breathtaking ocean views and challenging holes. The course has hosted numerous major championships and is a favorite among golfers worldwide.

While these courses are often considered to be among the best in the world, there are many other exceptional courses that could be included on this list. Ultimately, the best golf course in the world is subjective, and golfers may have different opinions based on their personal experiences and preferences.”

Wow, that’s actually not a bad lineup. Cypress Point supporters surely feel snubbed, but still, not a terrible list.

Alright, ChatGPT, you passed the first test.

Then, I asked, “Can you please rank the 10 best golf drivers that have ever been made?”

Here’s the list ChatGPT generated:

“Ranking the 10 best golf drivers that have ever been made is a difficult task since it is subjective and depends on personal preferences. However, based on performance, popularity, and innovation, here is a list of the 10 best golf drivers that have ever been made:

1. TaylorMade M5 Driver – Known for its speed and distance, the M5 Driver features an adjustable weight system that allows golfers to fine-tune their ball flight.

2. Callaway Rogue Driver – With a unique “Jailbreak” technology, the Rogue Driver has consistently been one of the most popular drivers on the market.

3. Titleist 915 D2 Driver – A classic driver from Titleist, the 915 D2 Driver is known for its workability and accuracy.

4. Ping G400 Driver – The G400 Driver features a sleek design and a tungsten-weighted sole that helps golfers achieve more distance and accuracy.

5. Cobra King F9 Speedback Driver – The King F9 features a unique aerodynamic design that helps golfers increase their clubhead speed.

6. Nike VR_S Covert Driver – Known for its innovative design and adjustability, the VR_S Covert Driver was a favorite of many golfers during its production.

7. Mizuno ST190 Driver – With a new “Wave Sole” technology, the ST190 Driver is designed to increase ball speed and reduce spin.

8. Wilson Staff D7 Driver – The D7 Driver features a lightweight design and a unique “Superlight” shaft that helps golfers achieve more clubhead speed.

9. Cleveland Launcher HB Driver – The Launcher HB Driver features a unique “HiBore” crown that helps golfers achieve a higher launch angle and more distance.

10. Adams Golf Tight Lies Driver – A classic driver from Adams Golf, the Tight Lies was one of the first drivers to feature a low-profile design that helped golfers hit the ball higher and farther.

Again, it is important to note that this list is subjective and based on personal opinions. Different golfers may have different preferences based on their playing style and needs.”

ChatGPT certainly seemed to avoid any brand favoritism by selecting 10 drivers from 10 different manufacturers, but honestly, it’s not the worst list I’ve ever seen.

What do you think about ChatGPT’s driver ranking? What’d it get wrong?

Interesting. Recently I purchased an older M5 and it has improved my game by at least 5 strokes on average. Not saying it is a top ten driver, but it did improve my game. My Callaway(s) XR and Big Bertha on sitting on the shelf.

    Artificial Unintelligence–AU

The R7 with moveable weights and a 460cc head
The Big Bertha for being oversize
The TM Pittsburgh Persimmon–the first popular metal driver
The Mizuno Ti-110, the first titanium driver

    The beat goes on….

Since AI has to go be availability of data as well as quantity, many of the newer drivers just don’t have to data to evaluated and ranked. The old adage of “garbage in, garbage out” still holds true.

But of the available data the rankings are pretty accurate, although from a cult standpoint the Ping G400 Max should be considered!

Interesting list. It left out the Wishon 919 THI driver. Many professional clubfitters fit with it. It can be hand selected for exact loft face angle lie specifications. Tom Wishon has nog changed this head design for a number of years because it works. It still is a terrific fitting driver head option.

Tony, I think most humans, and guessing most robots, do not consider the fitting process when thinking about the best drivers of all time. Curious as to why you give the fitting process so much weight and truly think it should be on the list? I know it’s not rare for actual specs to be different than labeled specs, but your comment is a stretch IMHO.

Rickie Fowler’s new putter: Standard-length Odyssey Jailbird 380 in custom orange

Published

on

Editor’s note: This is an excerpt from a piece our Andrew Tursky originally wrote for PGATour.com’s Equipment Report. Head over there for the full article.

…The Jailbird craze hasn’t really slowed down in 2024, either. According to Odyssey rep Joe Toulon, there are about 18-20 Jailbird putter users on the PGA TOUR.

Most recently, Akshay Bhatia won the 2024 Valero Texas Open using a broomstick-style Odyssey Jailbird 380 putter and Webb Simpson is switching into a replica of that putter at the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship.

Now, Fowler, who essentially started the whole Jailbird craze, is making a significant change to his putter setup.

Fowler, who has had a couple weeks off since the 2024 RBC Heritage, started experimenting with a new, custom-orange Jailbird 380 head that’s equipped with a standard 35-inch putter build, rather than his previous 38-inch counter-balanced setup.

According to Fowler, while he still likes the look and forgiveness of his Jailbird putter head, he’s looking to re-incorporate more feel into his hands during the putting stroke.

He told GolfWRX.com on Tuesday at the Wells Fargo Championship that the 38-inch counterbalanced setup “served its purpose” by helping him to neutralize his hands during the stroke, but now it’s time to try the standard-length putter with a standard-size SuperStroke Pistol Tour grip to help with his feel and speed control.

Although Fowler was also spotted testing standard-length mallets from L.A.B. Golf and Axis1 on Tuesday, he confirmed that the custom Odyssey Jailbird 380 is the putter he’ll use this week at the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship.

Head over to PGATour.com for the full article.
