What GolfWRXers are saying about the best older hybrids

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing older hybrids. WRXer ‘akronswitness’ recently played with a Nike Covert hybrid and was blown away with the results, saying:

“Played the other day with a friend’s old, beat up Nike Covert 3H, and I absolutely crushed it. It was my first time really using a hybrid, and I hit a bunch of great straight, easy shots with it. Even planted one about 5-6ft from the pin from 220 out. Something my 4i definitely cannot do.

I’ve received advice on here in the past about hybrids. Most people are saying to go for the G410 or the Apex UW. The problem is those are still going for $220-$280, and that is a little bit too much for me to spend on a single club that I will probably only hit 3-4x per round. I also wanted something a little newer than the 10+ year old Nike hybrid.

Can anybody recommend to me a 3H that was really good years ago that I could get for relatively cheap, maybe off eBay or 2nd swing?”

And our members have been sharing their top suggestions in our forum.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • Davemc82: “Anything with Adams on the clubhead. Personal preferences are the pro and pro mini.”
  • sanjaygolf: “Titleist 818. Easily can find it for <$100. Also, I think it’s important to have adjustability and that opportunity to change shafts.”
  • NoTalentLefty: “Callaway Epic Flash. Get it. You can dial in your lofts.”
  • naval2006: “If you happen to come across a Ping G15 hybrid, go for it. They must be almost giving them away, I assume. This should be the club that originated the phrase “‘it’s like cheating.'”

I second the Covert vrs Hibbys from a bad hubby hitter – I smoke them, and the fairways. At least the vrs tours crunch like no other. feel like marshmallows and fairly forgiving.

“Hibbys”? “hubby”? My man went totally out of his way to eliminate a letter or two to create his own pet name for a Hybrid.

Spotted: Tommy Fleetwood’s TaylorMade Spider Tour X Prototype putter

Published

on

Tommy Fleetwood has been attached to his Odyssey White Hot Pro #3 putter for years now. However, this week at the Wells Fargo Championship, we did spot him testing a new putter that is very different, yet somewhat similar, to his current gamer.

This new putter is a TaylorMade Spider Tour X head but with a brand new neck we haven’t seen on a Spider before. A flow neck is attached to the Spider head and gives the putter about a 1/2 shaft offset. This style neck will usually increase the toe hang of the putter and we can guess it gets the putter close to his White Hot Pro #3.

Another interesting design is that lack of TaylorMade’s True Path alignment on the top of the putter. Instead of the large white center stripe, Tommy’s Spider just has a very short white site line milled into it. As with his Odyssey, Tommy seems to be a fan of soft inserts and this Spider prototype looks to have the TPU Pure Roll insert with 45° grooves for immediate topspin and less hopping and skidding.

The sole is interesting as well in that the rear weights don’t look to be interchangeable and are recessed deep into the ports. This setup could be used to push the CG forward in the putter for a more blade-like feel during the stroke, like TaylorMade did with the Spider X Proto Scottie Scheffler tested out.

Tommy’s putter is finished off with an older Super Stroke Mid Slim 2.0 grip in blue and white. The Mid Slim was designed to fit in between the Ultra Slim 1.0 and the Slim 3.0 that was a popular grip on tour.
