Phil Mickelson WITB 2013
Phil Mickelson moved into the Callaway RAZR Fit Xtreme driver this week at the Waste Mangement Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale. And after a well publicized kiss he gave the driver (link to story) there has been a lot of talk about it.
Mickelson said that because the driver is lower spinning than his previous driver, a Callaway RAZR Hawk, he can add more loft, which makes it easier for him to hit straight.
“I was able to get it dialed in to where it goes straight, Mickelson said.”It really could be a revolutionary club for me.”
Here are all the clubs Mickelson had in the bag during his first win in 2013:
Driver: Callaway Razr Fit Xtreme (9.5 degrees adjusted to 8.1 degrees actual loft with 3-gram weight in the heel, 5-gram in the toe) with Mitsubishi Rayon Fubuki K 059 70X Shaft
Fairway woods: TaylorMade RBZ (14.5 degrees bent to 11.5), Titleist 980F (17 degrees)
Irons: Callaway RAZR X Muscleback Irons (4 iron through pitching wedge) with KBS Tour V2 Shafts
Wedges: Callaway JAWS Wedges (52-, 60- and 64-degrees) with KBS Tour V2 Shafts
Putter: Odyssey Black Series Tour Design #9
Ball: Callaway HEXBlack Tour golf ball

I heard Phil say, on TV, that his new driver was 10.5 degrees and the higher loft gave him less spin, etc. Even if it is a 9.5 tweaked to 8.1 it’s a couple of degrees more loft than he was using. Last I knew he was using a Razr Hawk of only 6.3 degrees. If he really had gone up 4 degrees he’d be hitting rainmakers!

How about that classic Titleist 4 wood. I actually have the same model, 980F 17*, and I can’t find a better club to replace it. The leading edge, and sole are perfect for all kinds of conditions. If you find one, don’t let it slip away. A true gem. Very solid at impact and easy to work the ball. As an owner, it’s easy to understand why Phil still plays it.

The clubs are beautiful looking. Callaway has some of the most clean looking equipment out there. that is very appealing. the only big mistake in the bag is the Taylor 3-wood… which he hardly used anyways so no big deal. oh, and it would appear he carries one of the new forged wedges and not all jaws wedges like stated in the description. Congrats on the recent win Phil!

Remember when Phil won early last season at Pebble and said it was bc the new Hex Black ball was “revolutionary”. He gives Callaway one good plug a year. He prob wont win another tourney all year. Here’s to hoping he does.

I’m pretty sure phil attributed the change in loft and not the actual driver model itself to his increased accuracy……

@ Mick – doesn’t every set of left handed gear look a little funny. Flip it around so they look right handed and they’re much better ; )
