‘Could Tiger be just as effective without his usual length?’ – GolfWRXers discuss
In our forums, our members have been discussing Tiger’s excellent comeback performance at the PNC Championship.
The performance was so impressive that WRXer ‘jdowning111’ speculates that a shorter hitting Tiger could be just as prolific when he returns to the Tour:
“After watching yesterday’s clinic, made me remember something that Butch Harmon said about Tiger: ‘He only needs 280 off the tee and he can beat everybody with his iron game.’ Have to say maybe he was onto something, I mean, did Tiger even miss an iron shot yesterday? Yes it was best ball but think about it…paired with his son, who’s 12, they shot a 57, and he’s nowhere near 100%?!?”
And our members have been sharing their thoughts on the matter in our forum.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- TheNutman: “Tiger can win with different swings, bodies, lengths it just doesn’t matter. He’s Tigerrrrrr. Expect an epic St. Andrews victory.”
- PhilssTheMannn: “I’m sorry, but you aren’t much contending on tour with 280 off the tee. Not in 2021 at least. 280 would be ranked 192nd on tour in driving distance. The average driving distance on tour 296, 16 yards is almost a 2 club difference for pros. Here are some guys who average more than 280 off the tee in 2021: Zach Johnson, Matt Kuchar, Kevin Kisner.”
- Quasimoto: “Obvious to me how much practice Tiger has put in from less than 100 yards. His wedges were stellar.”
- getair23: “TW grimacing a few times on the back 9 Sunday was unfortunately very telling where he currently is. If there is anything left in that leg, we know he will find it. If history is due to repeat itself. I’m hoping this generation’s 86 Masters wasn’t in 2019, and still on the horizon.”

Most forgiving players irons? – GolfWRXers discuss
In our forums, our members have been discussing players irons. WRXer ‘NorthTXGolf’ is on the hunt for some new irons but is putting a priority on forgiveness, and has reached out to fellow members who have been sharing their thoughts and advice on the subject in our forum.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- Sam217: “i230 has got to be one of the most forgiving players irons available. Cobra King Tour another. Don’t sleep on the New Level 480 DB coming out soon.”
- RangeBaller: “ZX5/ZX7 and i230 should definitely be in your testing pool.”
- YAMS49: “Another I210 homie here… Very highly recommended if you want/need spin and a consistent yardage.”
- golf-RN: “I second the Cobra King Tour irons. I am not the greatest ballstriker by any stretch of the imagination and I find the King Tours very forgiving. Toe strikes might lose 5 or 6 yards with no directional loss. You definitely feel the miss though lol but mishits from the center aren’t punished too hard regarding distance.”

What’s the perfect mini-driver/shaft combo? – GolfWRXers discuss
In our forums, our members have been discussing Mini-Drivers and accompanying shafts. WRXer ‘JamesFisher1990’ is about to purchase a BRNR Mini and is torn on what shaft weight to use, and our members have been sharing their thoughts and set ups in our forum.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- PARETO: “New BRNR at 13.5. Took it over to TXG (Club Champ but TXG will always rule) in Calgary for a fit. Took the head down to 12, stuck in a Graphite Design AD at 3 wood length and 60g. Presto- numbers that rivaled my G430Max but with waaaaay tighter dispersion. Win.”
- driveandputtmachine: “Still playing a MIni 300. The head was only 208, so I ordered a heavier weight and play it at 3 wood length. I am playing a Ventus Red 70. I play 70 grams in my fairways. I use it mainly to hit draws off the tee. When I combine me, a driver, and trying to hit a draw it does not work out well most of the time. So the MIni is for that. As an aside, I have not hit the newest BRNR, but the previous model wasn’t great off the deck. The 300 Mini is very good off the deck.”
- JAM01: “Ok, just put the BRNR in the bag along side a QI10 max and a QI10 3 wood. A load of top end redundancy. But, I have several holes at my two home courses where the flight and accuracy of the mini driver helps immensely. Mine is stock Proforce 65 at 13.5, I could see a heavier shaft, but to normal flex, as a nice alternative.”

Why Ludvig Aberg is my new favorite player – GolfWRXers discuss
In our forums, our members have been discussing one of the new sensations in the world of golf – Ludvig Aberg. The 24-year-old finished solo second at the Masters a couple of weeks ago, and gained many plaudits, including from several WRXers.
- RELATED: ‘There were a number of red flags’ – Ludvig Aberg reveals why he turned down multiple LIV offers
One member, RoyalMustang, took to the forums to explain why Aberg is now their favorite player, saying:
“I loved the way the Ludvig was out there, having a great time, not taking himself or the situation too seriously. Even after the double at 11, he was like “well, that’s golf!” Loose and relaxed: that’s the way to play. It’s obvious he loves what he’s doing, he loves the big moments, and he loves being a part of it all.
Arnold Palmer was viewed that way. Just like Brooks Robinson was forever viewed as not just a great baseball player, but a great human being and friend to Baltimore.”
And our members have been reacting and sharing their positive takes on the young Swede.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- redfirebird08: “Ludvig has a great attitude, a great smile, and a great golf swing.”
- otto6457: “I’m very lucky to have talked with Ludde several times at the Rawls Course at Texas Tech. He’s a truly nice guy and very friendly. Always said hello when we passed each other in the club house and was always smiling. Watching him hit balls on the range was a joy. He has “that sound” and trajectory to die for. There were many times he was out on the range in 30+ mph winds just hitting the most beautiful shots that just seemed to ignore the wind. World class ball striker. And yes……..I am a fan boy.”
- konklifer: “I like him. In an era of endless waggles and laboring, his swing and pace of play are a joy to watch.

Yes he can and it’s because of one reason. He’s the best overall iron player to ever exist.

Still in rehab for right leg and bad back
yet Tiger hits 3w, 277
So much for power in the golf swing comes from the ground
or from the legs.
Its momentum, physics of leverage and timing. Tiger may be
able to recover these and take a run at Jack’s record(G.O.A.T.)

This Tiger guy will never be a Brooks Koepka or Bryson.

Quote above was, “He only needs 280 off the tee and he can beat everybody with his iron game”. Get real. Hate to break the news to you but it’s 2022, not 2002. No one is intimidated by Tiger & subsequently laying down. He will definitely compete (& I hope he does) but any type of dominance ended (thanks to injuries) almost decade ago. All these younger guns grew up on ‘tiger golf’ & thus emulate him, & I’m sure they love the fact he’s out there w/ them (imagine playing / competing w/ your boyhood idol!). Doesn’t mean they want to lose to him though.
And last time I looked, he still has to walk all 4 days.

He’s on steroids for sure now. Ball speeds are nearly mid 170’s now which is above tour average. He did juice to recover from his last back surgery and came back with ball speeds in the 180’s. Speed dropped off quickly after he came of the sauce. His speeds now are faster then they were before his car accident. Wonder how long he will stay on sauce and how long it will take him to start looking like Barry bonds

The answer is easy, and it’s no… Being longer off the tee takes pressure off of all other aspects. If he’s having to hit more long irons in, that is more pressure to get it close and take risks. He’s also not the putter he once was, so once again, more pressure on irons and short game.

He hit a 7 iron to 10 feet from about 215 with a little cut and made it look easy. That’s pretty awesome.

If he’s 250 or 320 off the tee who cares. Putting wins tournaments. It’s not about how far you hit the ball

Exactly!
“drive for show, putt for dough”…. Its Tiger we talking about
The further you can hit it, the further off line it can go too.
So if he “only” hits it 270-280 off the tee but finds a high % of fairways specially w/his iron game anything is possible.
