Tiger Woods signs multi-year equipment deal with TaylorMade

Published

on

Tiger Woods announced that he has signed an equipment deal with TaylorMade to play the company’s driver, fairway woods, irons and wedges.

“After several months of testing and all brands to choose from, the choice is clearly [TaylorMade], Woods said on Twitter. “Proud to join the family!”

Tiger Woods’ New Metal Woods

Driver: TaylorMade 2016 M2 (9.5 degrees)
Shaft: Mitsubishi Rayon Tensei CK Pro White 70TX
Specs: 44.5 inches, D4 swing weight

3 Wood: TaylorMade 2017 M2 Tour (13 degrees)
Shaft: Mitsubishi Rayon Tensei CK Pro White 90TX
Specs: 42.5 inches, D4 swing weight

5 Wood: TaylorMade 2017 M1 Tour (19 degrees)
Shaft: Mitsubishi Rayon Tensei CK Pro White 90TX
Specs: 41.5 inches, D4 swing weight

Woods was first spotted using TaylorMade golf clubs in the weeks prior to his return to competitive golf at the Hero World Challenge in early December. During the tournament, he used TaylorMade’s 2016 M2 driver (9.5 degrees) and two TaylorMade 2016 M1 fairway woods (15 and 19 degrees).

According to a TaylorMade representative, Woods will use use a TaylorMade driver and two fairway woods this week in 2017 PGA Tour debut this week at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines. While he has a 13-club contract with TaylorMade, he will not change to TaylorMade irons and wedges this week.

“For irons and wedges, I’m going to work closely with the team at TaylorMade,” Tiger said in an email distributed by TaylorMade. “For my irons, we will be developing a new custom set. Over the coming months, we will take you along the development journey, from the initial design concepts all the way through the process until they make it into my bag. Finally, the new MG Wedge is absolutely beautiful, and we’re working to dial in the exact grind for me. There’s no doubt it’s fun to have some new weapons, and the confidence I have in my new TaylorMade equipment makes me excited for the season.”

Tiger is currently under contract to use Bridgestone Golf balls (he uses the company’s B330S model) and says he will continue to use the Scotty Cameron Newport 2 GSS putter that he has had in the bag for 13 of his 14 major championship victories.

OK…having undergone several ortho surgeries I’ll give him 5 or 6 months for rehab – but after another 6 months of hard work only 4 falrlways hit?…How’s that TM driver workin now… try a bonded Honma, Tour Edge or – buy the old (pre Nike deal) Titleist or Cobra molds and make a hundred for himself. They were the last two drivers he could hit the planet with.
I wish him no ill-will, just tired of the incessant BS coverage. Golf’s moved on, he’s welcome to keep working to catch the train. Let us know when he finishes top 5 this season. Then maybe there will be something to pay attention to…

Welcome to duck hooks and block rights Tiger.
The most inconsistent drivers on the market. Poor

Yeah he should’ve signed with Callaway he would have found more fairways 50 yards behind DJ

Jack he was still 50 yards behind DJ….9, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15th holes…..were you watching? It only took him 3 holes to start throwing his M2. Watch out today. Fore!!

True. There’s half a dozen better small shop Japanese heads no ones even heard of here.

with his bank account & resources he should have spent a month over there – WITHOUT his damn agent – and found the right stuff the old fashion way….hard work, trial & error

How come when Rory is set to change from Nike everyone points out that he still gets his Nike contract less what he is paid from someone else. Tiger’s deal with Nike was huge and I doubt Taylormade could match that, so then it wouldn’t exactly be “All about the $$$$$$$$” would it?

  4. Craig McMahon

    Jan 26, 2017 at 4:38 am

So he tested all the brands and it “had” to be TM even though he’s not using the irons yet as he’s helping them build a set??? All about the $$$$$

        Jan 26, 2017 at 4:51 pm

That’s how it’s supposed to work. Given the past few President’s love of Executive Orders, it seems like they’ve become the way for the commander in chief to circumvent the executive branch. Looks like he might tax Mexican imports to pay for his wall, lol. In other news, Callaway is now rethinking it’s move to Mexico for metal wood construction.

The Commander in Chief (President) is the executive branch. Congress is the legislative (lawmaking) branch.

I think I can translate..See comment below from “weeniewhistle” for context:

“Hey weeenwhistle, was your cousin’s diabetic call really fat? Put it on a diet then it will get better, right? Thank you for your knowledge, do you golf with a banjo, buddy? Or a fiddle”

The last part is presumably a reference to the syntax of weeniewhistle’s using and a jab at the fact that he is seemingly a Republican, having made a joke about voting for Hillary.

The most laughable comment about any Tiger news is “Who cares”. Do you realize how stupid that comment is? Basically the entire golfing world cares (outside of a small percentage of Tiger haters) and people outside of the golfing world care about Tiger far more than any other player. Those are #Facts, not #AlternativeFacts.

      Jan 25, 2017 at 2:20 pm

It’s crazy because Tiger is literally the tide that lifts all boats in the golfing industry – so if you care at all about the golfing industry, shouldn’t you care about what Tiger is doing – even if you don’t like it? It just doesn’t make any sense. The only reason that makes sense is that they’re being a hater holding on to some bitterness from the events of 2009, which is laughable. Completely ridiculous.

  20. Gary Moore

    Jan 25, 2017 at 11:58 am

Who cares….. all that does is make TaylorMade clubs more expensive for the consumer so they can pay the millions of dollars that they’re going to dish out for Tiger I never really understood why consumers would jump on a brand of clubs just because the pros play them. the consumer doesn’t play anywhere near as well a pro , so what’s the point of getting the clubs that they play

  21. weeeniewhistle

    Jan 25, 2017 at 11:50 am

Some of y’all really woke up this morning thirsty for the “Haterade”. Y’all sound like idiots. I’m sure most of you are ten times the golfer that Tiger is, that’s how you opinions became so valid right? Or maybe its because you voted for Hilary, probably both. However the case, while Tiger is collecting checks from a company that “wants” to pay him, you’ll still be going home every night from a job you hate, stroking your diabetic cat and wishing someone would “want” to pay you.

    • Ian

      Jan 25, 2017 at 11:57 am

wow thanks for saying that – i didn’t know cats could be diabetic.

If an individual is employed, then someone “wants” to pay them, regardless if they hate their job or not. I can tell you’re not a big fan of logic.
Oh, and the correct phrase is “whatever the case”.

When was the first M1 line introduced. Nov. 2015. When was the next line of M1 launched. December 2016. When can you actually buy. 1-27-17. Where does 3 months come from.

Choose a company but do it for free… Take no money and choose because it works best for his game. He doesn’t need the money.. And if he truly is staying around for the love of the game and the competiveness, then do it “pro bono”
Then I’m all in for Tiger.

    Jan 25, 2017 at 10:44 am

For my irons we will develop a new custom set, what like take a set of unbranded Miura’s, loft, bounce and lie to Tigers liking X100 shafts then stamp TM on the back. (in reality they don’t have to be Miura as there are plenty of quality forging houses in Japan and China to choose from)

    Hush my mouth!!!

My question is why Tiger and Rory, who are both worth eleventy billon dollars, need to sign exclusivity deals with ANYONE??? Why not just play whatever you want? Tiger couldn’t slam that Nike driver fast enough once he put the M2 in his hands, so why get into all of that again? They could have huge apparel deals and then do whatever they want. Totally don’t get it.

    • tlmck

      Jan 25, 2017 at 10:36 am

Endorsement deals are how you keep your “eleventy billon dollars”.

      Jan 25, 2017 at 10:47 am

If someone is willing to pay you lots and lots of money to play their clubs and build you exactly what you want why wouldn’t you let them pay you? I have never heard anyone say… “nah I don’t want to make money” Don’t kid yourself. Companies will pay big money for these big names and they would be crazy to not accept that money.

      • JJVas

        Jan 25, 2017 at 10:54 am

I’d would play with anything anyone was willing to pay me to play, but I can’t buy my own island. I think it’s fair to say that Tiger’s driver alone cost him strokes compared to the M2 product. Why open that can of worms again? Just go play Dubai and get $10M if you’re getting short on hundies to light your cigars with…

    • Jay

      Jan 25, 2017 at 10:58 am

If you believe in the company, their equipment and the R&D behind it, why wouldn’t you sign and get paid for using their equipment? You’ve had months to test everything, you find what works for you – there’s no need to waffle. Make the decision and run with it!

  30. Quint

    Jan 25, 2017 at 10:27 am

As long as consumers keep buying new clubs because they are just that, new, companies will continue to sign pros that make them money. They will keep jacking the price of clubs up, the bigger the names they sign. No discredit to TM, they make good stuff, but I’m a Callaway guy myself. As far as Tiger goes, he’s not stupid, he will sign for the right price tag. Whether your a Tiger fan or not, he is still a draw for ticket sales, and equipment sales.

  31. Tazz2293

That’s because Tiger is probably the one that’ll buy Taylormade. There were rumors speculating that he might pick the brand up, and this now makes it seem even more likely.

Change the name to Tigermade and can keep all the brand logos haha

  34. Joekelli

Why does he need to custom design irons? He should be able to take the new 770 or 750 irons and tweak the grind and weight a little and just play. I think he needs to quit thinking about being perfect and just go out and play golf.!

    • Ron

      Jan 25, 2017 at 9:44 am

Equipment

Did Rory McIlroy inspire Shane Lowry’s putter switch?

Published

on

Editor’s note: This is an excerpt from a piece our Andrew Tursky originally wrote for PGATour.com’s Equipment Report. Head over there for the full article.

The timing of Lowry’s putter changeup was curious: Was he just using a Spider putter because he was paired with McIlroy, who’s been using a Spider Tour X head throughout 2024? Was Lowry just being festive because it’s the Zurich Classic, and he wanted to match his teammate? Did McIlroy let Lowry try his putter, and he liked it so much he actually switched into it?

Well, as it turns out, McIlroy’s only influence was inspiring Lowry to make more putts.

When asked if McIlroy had an influence on the putter switch, Lowry had this to say: “No, it’s actually a different putter than what he uses. Maybe there was more pressure there because I needed to hole some more putts if we wanted to win,” he said with a laugh.

To Lowry’s point, McIlroy plays the Tour X model, whereas Lowry switched into the Tour Z model, which has a sleeker shape in comparison, and the two sole weights of the club are more towards the face.

Lowry’s Spider Tour Z has a white True Path Alignment channel on the crown of his putter, which is reminiscent of Lowry’s former 2-ball designs, thus helping to provide a comfort factor despite the departure from his norm. Instead of a double-bend hosel, which Lowry used in his 2-ball putters, his new Spider Tour Z is designed with a short slant neck.

“I’ve been struggling on the greens, and I just needed something with a fresh look,” Lowry told GolfWRX.com on Wednesday at the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship. “It has a different neck on it, as well, so it moves a bit differently, but it’s similar. It has a white line on the back of it [like my 2-ball], and it’s a mallet style. So it’s not too drastic of a change.

“I just picked it up on the putting green and I liked the look of it, so I was like, ‘Let’s give it a go.’”

Webb Simpson equipment Q&A: Titleist’s new 2-wood, 680 blade irons, and switching to a broomstick Jailbird

Published

on

With seven career wins on the PGA Tour, including a U.S. Open victory, Webb Simpson is a certified veteran on the course. But he’s also a certified veteran in the equipment world, too. He’s a gearhead who truly knows his stuff, and he’s even worked closely with Titleist on making his own custom 682.WS irons.

On Wednesday at the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship, I caught up with Simpson to hear about his experience with Titleist’s new prototype 2-wood, how Titleist’s 680 Forged irons from 2003 ended up back in his bag, and why he’s switching into an Odyssey Ai-One Jailbird Cruiser broomstick putter this week for the first time.

Click here to read our full story about Simpson’s putter switch on PGATOUR.com’s Equipment Report, or continue reading below for my full Q&A with Simpson at Quail Hollow Club on Wednesday.

See Webb Simpson’s full WITB from the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship here

GolfWRX: It seems like you’ve been a little all over the place with your irons in the past six months or so, and now going back to the 680’s. Is that just a comfort thing? What’s been going on with the irons?

Webb Simpson: Titleist has been so great at working with me, and R&D, on trying to get an iron that kind of modernizes the 680. And so the 682.WS took the T100 grooves, but kinda took the look and the bulk and the build of the 680’s into one club. They’re beautiful, and awesome looking. I just never hit them that well for a consistent period of time. It was probably me, but then I went to T100’s and loved them. I loved the spin, the trajectory, the yardage, but again, I never went on good runs. Going through the ground, I couldn’t feel the club as well as with the blade. So last week, I’m like, ‘Alright. I’m gonna go back more for…comfort, and see if I can get on a nice little run of ball striking.’

So that’s why I went back.

OK, that makes sense. I know you had done some 2-wood testing recently. Is that in the bag right now?

It’s like day-by-day. I used it at Hilton Head every day. Valero, I used it one round. And this week, me and my caddie will do the book every morning, and if it’s a day where we think we need it, we’ll just put it in and take the 3-wood out. I love it because it’s a super simple swap. Like, it doesn’t really change much.

Yeah, can you tell me about that club? I mean, we don’t really know anything about it yet. You know? I haven’t hit it or anything, obviously.

It has grooves like a 3-wood. Spin is perfect. And it’s honestly, like, everything is in the middle of a 3-wood and driver number. Trajectory, spin, carry, all of it. So, a Hilton Head golf course is almost too easy to talk about because, you know, there, so many holes are driver 3-wood.

Valero, our thinking was we had two par-5’s into the wind, and we knew that it would take two great shots to get there in two. So instead of hitting driver-driver, we just put it in. And I used it on those holes.

Hilton was a little easier because it was off-the-tee kind of questions. But Colonial will be a golf course where, you know, there’s a lot of driver or 3-woods. It’s kind of like a backup putter or driver for me now. I’ll bring it to every tournament.

So it’s, like, in your locker right now, probably?

Well, it would be. It’s in my house [because Webb lives near by Quail Hollow Club, and is a member at the course.] It’s in the garage.

Oh, yeah, that’s right. Do you know what holes you might use it out here if it goes in play?

Potentially 15, depending on the wind. Second shot on 10. Could be 14 off the tee. The chances here are pretty low (that he’ll use the 2-wood). But, like, Greensboro would be an awesome club all day. I’m trying to think of any other golf courses.

There’s plenty that it’ll be a nice weapon to have.

It’s interesting, the wave of 2-woods and mini drivers. Like, it’s just really taken off on Tour, and all the companies have seemed to embrace it.

Yeah. The thing I had to learn, it took me, like, at least a week to learn about it is you gotta tee it up lower than you think. I kept teeing it up too high. You need it low, like barely higher than a 3-wood. And that was where I got optimal spin and carry. If you tee it up too high, you just don’t get as much spin and lose distance, I don’t know if that’s just a mini driver thing.

And you obviously have a Jailbird putter this week. What spurred that on?

Inconsistent putting. I’m stubborn in a lot of ways when it comes to my equipment, but I have to be open minded – I just hadn’t putted consistently well in a while. And I’m like, ‘Man, I feel my ball-striking coming along. Like I feel better; for real, better.’

If I can just get something in my hands that I’m consistent with. Being on Tour, you see it every year, guys get on little runs. I can put together four to five tournaments where I’m all the sudden back in the majors, or in the FedExCup Playoffs. You can turn things around quick out here. I’m like, ‘Man, whatever’s going to get me there, great.’

My caddie, David Cook, caddied for Akshay at the Houston Open and he putted beautifully. Then, I watched Akshay on TV at Valero, and he putted beautifully. And, I’m like, ‘I’m just going to try it.’

I’ve never tried it for more than a putt or two, and I just ordered what Akshay uses. It was pretty awkward at first, but the more I used it, the more I’m like, ‘Man, it’s pretty easy.’ And a buddy of mine who’s a rep out here, John Tyler Griffin, he helped me with some setup stuff. And he said at Hilton Head, he wasn’t putting well, then tried it, and now he makes everything. He was very confident. So I’m like, ‘Alright, I’ll try it.’”

And you’re going with it this week?

Hundred percent.

Alright, I love it. Thank you, I always love talking gear with you. Play well this week.

Thanks, man.
