Is this TaylorMade’s new M1 driver?

Published

Is this TaylorMade’s new M1? It sure looks like it could be the company’s 2017 flagship driver.

The photo of the driver was posted on Instagram by user jdsclubs, which is associated with JD’s Clubs, a custom fitter in Ostego, Minnesota.

Judging from the Instagram comments, the photo was not taken by jdsclubs, but rather passed onto the user. In the comments section, jdsclubs says, “No official release date…” and “I was given this photo from a reliable source.”

Here are two more photos provided by JD’s Clubs, of what appears to be the same driver.

The driver in question appears to use more carbon fiber than TaylorMade’s current M1 460 driver, which was released in the fall 2015.

TaylorMade’s current M1 460 driver (right).

The M1 460 is touted for its high-launch, low-spin launch characteristics, which TaylorMade attributes to the addition of a multi-material crown that includes carbon fiber. TaylorMade says the use of carbon fiber reduced the weight of the crown, allowing the center of gravity (CG) to be moved lower in the clubhead. Expanding the use of carbon fiber to the toe and sole of the driver would presumably enhance the ability of TaylorMade engineers to reposition weight to more optimal locations in the driver head, or increase the mass of the sliding weights.

Like the current M1 460, the driver pictured uses a TaylorMade T-Track system, two independent sliding weights that allow golfers to create a higher trajectory, lower trajectory, more draw bias or more fade bias by adjusting one or both of the weights.
