Tweets of the Week: GMac ties the knot, Presidents Cup ping pong, 867-5309

Published

The best non-European golfers in the world are assembling in Dublin, Ohio for the Presidents Cup this week with both the PGA Tour and Web.com seasons officially wrapped up. The former, of course, concluded two weeks ago with Henrik Stenson’s statement victory at the Tour Championship. The latter ended with Chesson Hadley –who began the 2013 golf season competing in mini tour events — locking up his 2014 PGA Tour card at the Dye’s Valley course at TPC Sawgrass.

Here’s a truly mixed basket of Tweets of the Week, featuring both a wedding and a tournament champion’s compelling sing along to Tommy Tutone’s seminal “867-5309/Jenny.”

The Tour’s best have a few weeks off to catch up on the what they didn’t have time to do during the post-PGA Championship grind. You know, stuff like organizing the garage, doing laundry, and getting married. Graeme McDowell wedded his girlfriend Kristin Stape over the weekend. Below is a picture he posted to his Instagram and Twitter accounts. Congrats to the happy couple!

On the subject of golfers enjoying themselves, here’s Web.com Tour Championship winner Chesson Hadley dancing like nobody’s watching/like he just won 180 grand and punched his ticket to the PGA Tour.

The fun wasn’t limited to post-Web.com Tour Championship. Here’s a shot of Adam Scott and Jason Day engaging in the traditional pre-international competition throwdown of choice amongst the world’s best: ping pong. Courtesy of International team member Graham DeLaet’s Twitter.

Changing gears entirely, here’s an interesting (LOVEly?) tweet by the elder statesman of pro golfers on Twitter, Gary Player. Perhaps, the sentiments are a little new-agey for most. And the heart made with hands against the sky? A bit much for many. However, when the Black Knight tweets, or retweets, we listen. Way to stand up for the power and primacy of love, Mr. Player!

Here’s some low-hanging fruit: Michelle Wie’s Instagram from her first time at a shooting gallery. Queue the jokes about her being better with a gun than a golf club, shooting targets better than low numbers, etc…

I’ve noticed a trend lately amongst pros on Twitter that I don’t like for several reasons: the “thank you to my sponsors” tweet. It usually looks something like: “Thanks @acmecompany @widgetsinc. #greatsponsors.” The tweet seems forced, useless, and of little value to followers.

Below is an example of something I think works a lot better. Behold, Erik Compton’s Hugo Boss belt collection. The tweet gets his sponsors name in front of his followers AND is interesting/entertaining AND doesn’t look like a cheap plug.

Finally…well, what can you really say to properly introduce a Boo Weekley tweet… Check out this gem, which is, incidentally, another example of a pro promoting a sponsor in an entertaining way, rather than merely name-dropping his backers.

The Michelle Wie being better with a gun than a Golf Club is SPOT ON!! Most overrated golfer on the planet.
