What made you get a 7-wood? – GolfWRXers discuss

In our forums, our members have been discussing their motivation for adding a 7-wood to their bag. WRXer ‘VanTheMan0519’ kicks off the thread saying:

“This spot in my bag is the least used. I play driver, 5 wood lofted at 16.5, then transition into a 20* utility iron. I’ve tried a hybrid as well for the 20/21* slot and don’t get along. I hit the utility fine, but I’m thinking a 7 wood would be easier to hit.

What sold you on the 7 wood, and what weight shaft are you using? Anyone use it for tee shots on long par 3’s or tight par 4’s?”

Luxor54: “I went with a 7 wood this year as I found my 18° utility iron was pretty one dimensional, great off the tee, useless out of the rough, and less reliable out of the fairway compared to a wood. Went with a PXG 0341X proto 21° 7 wood with a 70g HZRDUS smoke black RDX 6.5 (also got an 18° 5 wood of the same model with the same shaft). I use it a bunch off the tee for shorter and tighter par 4s as it’s a reliable 230+ off the tee. It’s truly magical when struck well. Going for par 5s in two is now filled with confidence instead of doubt. Nothing quite like hitting something off the turf from 225 yards out, have a towering flight and having it stick like a dart.”
596: “My 7 wood replaced my 4 iron. Goes a bit longer, much higher and lands much softer. But that got replaced with a 4 hybrid. Goes just as far, not quite as high and lands soft. The biggy is that the 4h is by far more accurate.”
Pete O’Tube: “I got a 7 wood because I can’t hit a utility or a 3 iron anymore. Perfect for a 68-year-old 7 handicapper.”

phizzy30: “I had driver, 3 metal, 2/4 hybrid once upon a time as a higher ss player. 4 hybrid is gone and in place is a driving iron nowadays. I don’t think what you’re proposing is weird in anyway, however the yardage gap might be glaringly huge between driver and 2 hybrid. What is it about your 3 metal that has got you all messed up? You could always go 4 metal with shorter shaft and see if that works.”

In our forums, one user has gone searching for fellow users of a mini driver. In a post, @TightFade asked for other mini driver users to chime in with their weapon of choice, the reason for employing a mini, and what club follows it in the bag.

“What mini are you playing? What spot in the bag did it take over? What’s the next club after it? For me: Elyte mini 13.5. Replacing 3w. Next up club looks like it’ll be 5w.”

ColdOkieGolf: “R7 15.5 turned down to 13.5 It replaces the 3w. I found it surprisingly easy to hit off the deck, and it’s very rare that I need or want to hit something beyond 250 from the fairway, so next club is my 7w.”
ChaosTheory: “I’m sub-90 MPH with driver. But I’m able to hit DOD. I have been wanting something like the R7 15.5, so I just ordered one. I have a spot in the bag so nothing has to go. But I could see it replacing my trusty 4 wood, which I never use for approach shots. Just tee shots and lay ups. If I drop the 4 wood, I will turn my 7 wood down to ~20 degrees and will have good gaps. I recently tried a thriver build: 12 degree driver turned to 14, with a heavier 44 inch shaft and added head weight. I hit it great. Very accurate and not overly high, but the problem was that it sometimes went as far as a typical drive. And that’s not what I needed. So I will probably turn the 15.5 up to 16.5 or even 17.5. It’s all theoretical at this point. ?”
