Published

on

What are the best irons in 2021? At GolfWRX, we take great pride in our online community and the cumulative knowledge and experience of our members. Needless to say, that extends to their GolfWRXers views on the best irons of 2021.

The bedrock of GolfWRX.com is the community of passionate and knowledgable golfers in our forums, and we put endless trust in the opinions of our GolfWRX members—the most knowledgeable community of golfers on the internet. No other group of golfers in the world tests golf clubs as frequently or as extensively, nor is armed with such in-depth information about the latest technology.

You can see the full results for the best irons of 2021, as well as additional comments, in the forums.

Best irons of 2021: The top 5

1. Srixon ZX7

What Srixon says: “A compact blade shape, narrow topline, single-piece forging, and narrow sole give ZX7 the workability, feel, and aesthetics of a world-class players iron.”

Here’s what GolfWRX members are saying

  • @Carolina Golfer 2: “ZX7 (my vote as well) with a large early lead. I expect it to only increase from here. They are truly a great iron. For the record, my 2nd best would be the ZX5!”
  • @CobraGolfFan96: “Absolutely love my ZX7’s!”
  • @JStang: “I have had my ZX7’s for a while now and am comfortable sharing a quick review. One thing that has been noticeable is how forgiving these are. I am constantly surprised at how far these fly when mishit. They feel outstanding when centered, and while they are a bit larger than I typically play, they don’t bother me one bit anymore. For the first time in years, I am not even considering another set of irons. These might be in the bag for years to come.”

You can read what other golfers are saying about ZX7 irons in the GolfWRX forums, and see our launch piece here.

2. Titleist T100

What Titleist says: “Titleist T100 irons are forged to suit the player’s eye. The T100 inspires daring, imaginative play with precise distance, Tour-level shaping and signature Titleist feel. This iron is designed to help the best players score lower.”

Here’s what GolfWRX members are saying

  • @sherlockgolfer: “Had my T100s for about 6 rounds now and can say they’re probably the best irons I’ve hit. Coming from 3 straight sets of 712, 716, 718 CBs, and there is definitely more of a clicky feel compared to those irons, but it is quite satisfying, and the ball does go further and higher. I was looking for more launch in the long irons from CB’s, and that’s exactly what I got.”
  • @Matty01984: “Superb set of irons. I must admit when I changed from my 714 AP2’s I was a little sceptical. I worried that there might be a little trade off going into a better looking, smaller iron as opposed to a slightly bigger one with more forgiveness. I simply cannot see there being any difference. The T100 goes just as far as the AP2, has just as much forgiveness and is in a better looking package.”

You can read what other golfers are saying about T100 irons in the GolfWRX forums, and see our launch piece here.

3. Srixon ZX5

What Srixon says: “Srixon’s ZX5 Irons combine pioneering ball speed technology with premium forged feel, and deliver all of it in a forgiving yet workable chassis that’s razor sharp at address.”

Here’s what GolfWRX members are saying

  • @potuna: “ZX5 for me best irons ever, and I’ve tried a bunch over the years.”
  • @EastTNGolfer: “Well, got the ZX5s on the course today. I saw ball flights I have never seen before, and terrible struck shots that still managed to find the green.”

You can read what other golfers are saying about ZX5 irons in the GolfWRX forums, and see our launch piece here.

4. TaylorMade P770

What TaylorMade says: “We took everything that makes P•790 such a beast and put it into a more compact players shape with P•770. They share the same DNA, each built for dominating distance and premium performance. It’s impossible to choose your favorite child.”

Here’s what GolfWRX members are saying

  • @ASN21: “Came to these from the OG P790’s and haven’t missed a beat. They simply check all the boxes. Can’t wait to use them again on Friday.”
  • @ScottHutch2: “Playing the best golf of my life with the P770s. I recently made a switch from ctaper 120 —> $taper HT 120, and the results have been phenomenal. Feel/consistency/control are outstanding compared to the Srixon Z585s I was playing previously, but they still give you a little pop distance wise. Great iron and I think fitting is very important with these.”

You can read what other golfers are saying about P770 irons in the GolfWRX forums, and see our launch piece here.

5. Callaway Apex Pro

2021-callaway-apex-pro-21-irons

What Callaway says: “We’ve redesigned this iron from the ground up, with an innovative A.I. face architecture and all new forged hollow body construction. Any scratch or single digit handicapper who wants speed and forgiveness in a players performance iron needs to try the Apex Pro 21.”

Here’s what GolfWRX members are saying

  • @Whipitgood13: “I recently got the Apex Pro 21’s with the MMT 95 shaft, and I am blown away with how good these irons are. I’ve never had dispersion this tight. And the MMT shaft is just amazing. Like firm butter. And you can lean into any shot, and the control is just there. Super impressed and happy.”
  • @avidswampthing66: “Coming from a set of Miura’s…..these new Apex Pro 21 irons are simply the best irons I’ve ever played. 7-4 iron lots of straight high shots with plenty of pop but no crazy flyers. 8-PW are softer feeling and easily workable. Honestly, I’m kind of wowed.”

You can read what other golfers are saying about Apex Pro irons in the GolfWRX forums, and see our launch piece here.

I bought a set of ping 425 worst mistake I’ve made and I’m a ping guy. Sound like your beating on a old tin can.

I’m not surprised to See Srixon bag 2 out of the top 5 spots. I’ m shocked though, that Mizuno doesn’t even get one iron in the top 5!

For those with large budgets…Why spend $1400 to $1600 for any of these “off the shelf” big box store irons, when one can plunk down another $600 and get PXG’s custom fit and custom built.
On the other hand, I’m buying Hogans. Custom fit and custom built. For under $900. Money back guarantee.

    6. Ping Eye 2. Still just as good as anything ever produced.

Not True. Ugliest irons ever made, feel so hard and terrible, and they sound worse than banging trash can lids together.

I hit most of those but ended up with the Ping 425, which are working out great for me..just wish they would have put Regular grips on them instead of the Arccos Ones as I am not one for using fancy do dads that require cell phones….(plus it cost me $80 to replace with regular grips).

This dude spent over $1000 on irons, probably more when you include the hybrids because he couldn’t hit the 5,6 and 7………… and hes on about $80 grips LMFAO.

Choose Your Driver: Which 2012 driver was your favorite?

Published

on

The year was 2012. Gangnam Style ruled supreme, its infectious beats and ludicrous horse-riding dance moves hypnotizing us with their stupidity. Everyone was talking about the Mayan calendar, convinced that the end of days was near. Superheroes soared on the silver screen, with the Avengers assembling in epic fashion. Katniss Everdeen survived The Hunger Games. And the memes! The memes abounded. Grumpy Cat triumphed. We kept calm and carried on.

In much the same way that automotive enthusiasts love classic cars, we at GolfWRX love taking a backward glance at some of the iconic designs of years past. Heck, we love taking iconic designs to the tee box in the present!

In that spirit, GolfWRX has been running a series inspired by arguably the greatest fighting game franchise of all time: Mortal Kombat. It’s not “choose your fighter” but rather “choose your driver.”

Check out some of the standout combatants of 2012 below.

Nike VRS

Often harshly critiqued during its years releasing golf equipment (right, Phil Mickelson?), Nike’s tenure in the club-and-ball business gets a gloss of nostalgic varnish, with many of its iron and putter designs continuing to attract admirers. Among the company’s driver offerings, the 2012 VRS — or VR_S, if you will — drew high marks for its shaping and toned-down appearance. The multi-thickness, NexCOR face was no joke either.

Check out our coverage from 2012 here.

Callaway RAZR Fit

Callaway’s first foray into moveable weight technology (married with its OptiFit hosel) did not disappoint. With a carbon fiber crown, aerodynamic attention to detail, and variable and hyperbolic face technologies, this club foreshadowed the tech-loaded, “story in every surface” Callaway drivers of the present, AI-informed design age.

Check out our coverage from 2012 here.

Cleveland Classic 310

Truly a design that came out of left field. Cleveland said, “Give me a persimmon driver, but make it titanium…in 460cc.” Our 2012 reviewer, JokerUsn wrote, “I don’t need to elaborate on all the aesthetics of this club. You’ve seen tons of pics. You’ve all probably seen a bunch in the store and held them up close and gotten drool on them. From a playing perspective, the color is not distracting. It’s dark enough to stay unobtrusive in bright sunlight…Even my playing partners, who aren’t into clubs at all…commented on it saying it looks cool.” Long live!

Check out our coverage from 2012 here.

Titleist 910

While there’s no disputing Titleist’s “Titleist Speed” era of drivers perform better than its 2010s offerings, sentimentality abounds, and there was something classically Titleist about these clubs, right down to the alignment aid, and the look is somewhere between 983 times and the present TS age. Representing a resurgence after a disappointing stretch of offerings (907, 909), The 910D2 was a fairly broadly appealing driver with its classic look at address and classic Titleist face shape.

Check out our coverage from 2012 here.

TaylorMade RocketBallz

The white crown. The name. You either loved ‘em or you hated ‘em. TaylorMade’s 2012 offering from its RocketBallz Period boasted speed-enhancing aerodynamics and an Inverted Cone Technology in the club’s titanium face. Technology aside, it’s impossible to overstate what a departure from the norm a white-headed driver was in the world of golf equipment.

Check out our coverage from 2012 here.

Ping i20

Long a quietly assertive player in the driver space, Ping’s i20 was more broadly appealing than the G20, despite being a lower-launch, lower-spin club. Ping drivers didn’t always have looks that golfer’s considered traditional or classic, but the i20 driver bucked that trend. Combining the classic look with Ping’s engineering created a driver that better players really gravitated toward. The i20 offered players lower launch and lower spin for more penetrating ball flight while the rear 20g tungsten weights kept the head stable. Sound and feel were great also, being one of the more muted driver sounds Ping had created up to that time.
