Hadley wins Web.com Tour finale

Published

on

With nary half a month to spare, the 2013-14 PGA Tour is finally set.

On Sunday, Chesson Hadley, 26, earned the most significant title of his career to date. A former Georgia Tech player, whose former teammates Cameron Tringale and Roberto Castro also enjoy PGA Tour status, Hadley posted a final-round of 1-under par 69 and a four-day total of 10-under par 270, good for a two-stroke margin over a quartet of players.

One of those four players was former LSU golfer John Peterson, whose runner-up finish capped off a terrific Web.com Tour Finals campaign. Though he didn’t win, he racked up four consecutive top-five finishes, earning him the top spot on the Finals money list and full status on the 2013-14 PGA Tour.

The Finals’ final shakeout somewhat mirrored Saturday’s proceedings in SEC football, where Georgia earned a narrow, late victory over the LSU Tigers. But in golf on Sunday, LSU seemed to get the better of the Bulldogs, with Peterson’s former LSU teammate Andrew Loupe also securing a Tour card with a tie-sixth place finish.

All but two of the Web.com Tour Championship’s top-16 finishers earned their Tour cards, with Byron Smith and Andres Gonzales falling a single stroke short.

Bobby Gates, with a four-week total of $33,650, despite missing the cut at the Web.com Tour Championship, earned the last PGA Tour card available this week, with the aforementioned Gonzales falling less than $2,000 short. A single stroke on Sunday would have made the difference for the former UNLV teammate of Tour player Ryan Moore who stands out from other players on account of his Fu Manchu-style facial hair. He will report back to the Web.com Tour in a couple of weeks for another year of golf’s equivalent of Triple-A baseball.

Other players who fell just outside the top 25 for the Web.com Tour Finals include Tim Petrovic (27th), who falls out of the PGA Tour for the first time in more than a decade, and journeyman Greg Owen. Former PGA Tour winners Vaughn Taylor, Rod Pampling, Robert Karlsson and Arron Oberholser all failed to earn their PGA Tour cards from the Finals and will have to rely on other means to secure future PGA Tour status.

There will be virtually no rest for dozens of travel- and golf-weary new PGA Tour members. The 2013-14 season begins with the Frys.com Open on Oct. 10. All the pressure, the frustration and the joy will begin anew.

Tim grew up outside of Hartford, Conn., playing most of his formative golf at Hop Meadow Country Club in the town of Simsbury. He played golf for four years at Washington & Lee University (Division-III) and now lives in Pawleys Island, S.C., and works in nearby Myrtle Beach in advertising. He's not too bad on Bermuda greens, for a Yankee. A lifelong golf addict, he cares about all facets of the game of golf, from equipment to course architecture to PGA Tour news to his own streaky short game.
