Spotted: Chris Kirk’s Callaway Opus wedges

Published

on

Gear junkies have been waiting patiently for Callaway to release new wedges. We may have gotten a sneak peek at what’s coming after seeing something new in Chris Kirk’s bag at the 2024 Charles Schwab Challenge. Spotted were a few different wedges, but the Callaway Opus caught our eye.

The term opus can mean, “any artistic work, especially one on a large scale. With iconic wedge designer Roger Cleveland now working with Terra Forza golf, could this have been his last creation for Callaway?

We don’t have any official word from Callaway on these wedges, but the main focal point seems to be the extra mass in the center of the club. This added material could be used to adjust the center of gravity on the wedge in order for it to launch and spin a specific way. It can also be used to enhance the feel and sound of the club with more material behind the impact location.

The shaping of the head looks to be a little more on the rounded side compared to the current Jaws Raw wedges. The topline on the wedge looks to be fairly thin and the leading edge is pretty straight with just a little bit of a radius to it. The color looks to be an antique brown and it will be interesting to see if that is a plating on the club or some kind of oilcan finish that will wear away and rust.

Opus? Like Callaway’s magnum opus? It never ceases to amaze me that companies somehow find a way to name their golf equipment dumber things every year. Just when you think it can’t possibly get any worse.

Spotted: Adam Scott with new Miura iron setup

Published

on

Editor’s note: This is an excerpt from a piece our Andrew Tursky originally wrote for PGATour.com’s Equipment Report. Head over there for the full article.

The irons that Scott has in the bag this week are a mixed set of Miura CB-302 long irons and KM-700 mid-to-short irons (“KM” stands for company founder “Katsuhiro Miura”).

Although Scott has mostly been a traditional blade iron user throughout his veteran career, he’s opted for irons with slightly more forgiveness built into them in the last year.

To that point, Scott’s new KM-700 irons are actually one-piece forged designs, except they have a unique heel-toe design that pushes the center of gravity toward the heel of the club, and effectively expands the sweet spot to make them more forgiving. The irons also have a complex cavity design allowing optimal center of gravity and turf interaction.

The KM-700 irons strive to combine the looks and feel of a traditional blade iron, mixed with the modern complexity of high-tech and perimeter-weighted cavity-back irons.

Scott’s new irons include Miura’s red hanko stamping, which Miura calls its “stamp of approval,” plus Scott’s personal logo has been added to the back cavities, as well.

Although the irons are freshly in the bag this week, Scott’s player manager confirmed with GolfWRX.com on Tuesday that he first received the irons at the Miura headquarters in Japan while he was there for the 2023 Zozo Championship. He also briefly used the KM-700 short irons when he switched to them mid-event at the 2023 Wyndham Championship, but we haven’t seen them in his bag since the brief experiment.
