McIlroy takes aim at Mickelson’s conduct while Greg Norman trolls in the wake of PGA Tour changes

Published

on

On Wednesday, Jay Monahan announced several enhancements to the PGA Tour and its schedule in a press conference ahead of the Tour Championship.

The new changes include additional “elevated events” for 2023, with top players (defined as players who finish in the top 20 under the current Player Impact Program and players who finish in the top 20 under the revised PIP criteria) set to participate in at least 20 PGA Tour events (up from 15, previously).

In addition, a new Earnings Assurance Program will guarantee all fully exempt tour players who compete in 15 tournaments $500,000.

Ahead of the season finale, a reporter at East Lake asked Rory McIlroy the following question: “Obviously several months ago Phil made some comments about the Tour that were pretty harsh. I’m just wondering in light of what we’ve learned today if any of his underlying points had some merit. Maybe not the egregious ones, but if you dug down deeper, is there any truth to some of that, and is that why we’re seeing this now?”

In response, McIlroy stated:

“Yeah, as much as I probably don’t want to give Phil any sort of credit at all, yeah, there were certain points that he was trying to make. But there’s a way to go about them. There’s a way to collaborate. There’s a way — you get all the top players in the world together and you get them on the same page. You then go to the Tour and you suggest ideas and you work together. This was pure collaboration.

“As I said, this isn’t some sort of renegade group trying to take some sort of power grab of the PGA Tour. This is, okay, how can we make this Tour better for everyone that’s going to play on it now and everyone that’s going to play on the PGA Tour going forward.

“Were some of these ideas, did they have merit? Of course they did. But he just didn’t approach it the right way.”

On the other side of the battlefield is Greg Norman, CEO of LIV Golf, who couldn’t resist a dig at the PGA Tour following the news, taking to Instagram to make his feelings known, saying “A day late and a dollar short.”

Hahaha! Tiger Woods never cared about the PGA Tour, now he’s a “has been” so now he cares. McIlroy, the King of the Choke, still has one Open Championship and Norman has two, enough said.

Basically, the PGA Tour is going to give handouts to those players who can’t hack it on the weekends and make the top 20 players in the world richer.

But, if you can’t play golf, the tour will allow you to make money by being a clown on social media.

This just keeps getting better. The PGA Tour is so desperate they are willing to erase themselves in the process.

All this hoo-hah from people who can earn almost as much in a couple of weekends as most of their fans will earn in a lifetime. Besides the pros, who the **** CARES about all this? Both of these Tours could dry up and blow away and it would have no effect on my being able to go out, play a round of golf with my friends, and have a great time.

“Commissioner” Greg Norman continues to reveal himself as a small, petty, spiteful little man….carefully placed there by his Saudi overloads due to his long-held resentment of the PGA Tour — the same place that allowed him to become a household name. (Same goes for the traitor Phil Mickelson.) And forget the “say, but what about….” argument bleating that “Hey, all these other American companies do business with MBS in the Middle East.” Sorry; IRRELEVANT. Those companies are not being used as pawns to camouflage the abuses of an oppressive regime. But forget all that….. just who do you want running professional golf — respected American professionals who have devoted their lives to the business of the game or devious, manipulative rulers of a FOREIGN GOVERNMENT?

This is literally the 2nd time the PGA tour stole one of his ideas and adapted and adopted it into their fabric. It is unlikely Rory and Tiger would have done this without the prodding from Phil. Norman’s tweet is spot on with the exception of him writing “to” instead of “too.”

Does anybody care what liberal sheep Rory views. Just because you can hit bombs does not replace college or critical thinking. Dude owns chunk of NBC golf pass. Not to mention his NIKE contract which is quite hypocritical.

Tiger and Rory both have ownership I media that covers PGA tour events….It’s in their best interest to keep PGA at forefront ….It’s all business and business isn’t fair. LIV has touched them in the tours pockets…..I like it.

It’s not fair to hold a individual above a standard that you hold your country. The US number 2 trade partner is SA….

I can’t believe anyone isn’t reminding these people that they play golf for a living. I have zero sympathy for someone who chooses golf as a way to make a living and then complains when they can’t afford it. I can’t so I got an actual job. These people can’t relate to us normals in any way. This is also why athlete and celebrity opinions hold no weight.

If I was an attorney for the Tour, there would be a memo going out to all players, keep your mouth shut until litigation is over. The more Rory and anyone else talks, the more chance they will be served with subpoena’s now and in the future. Opposing lawyers love it when the other side can’t shut up.

McIlroy takes aim at Mickelson’s conduct?
Come on guys… you’re better than this.

I’m not sure Rory would agree thats what his intention was. Certainly he thinks Phil might have been able to make a difference by working within the membership than moving to the LIV but there is also a very candid acknowledgement that it moved the needle faster.

I wonder how many times Phil or others have tried to work within the membership but got frustrated with the results. I think that would be an interesting story to have told. Doubt we will ever hear it though.

    Yeah, “just like LIV.”
All except for the parts about the monumental Saudi sportswashing, the Donald Trump attachment, the Greg Norman blood feud, the open war on members of the golfing press, the deliberate courting of the PGA Tour’s most dubious public relations misfits, and the fundamental operation of championship tournaments as glorified corporate outings.

Phil jumped on the grenade to make life on tour better. You don’t have to like the way he went about it, but you can’t deny the fact that none of this happens if Phil didn’t say what he said and do what he did.

    • Jason Barbieri

      Aug 26, 2022 at 2:01 pm

That’s kind of a false dichotomy take, though, isn’t it? That Phil either had to leave & scuttle the ship of the PGA Tour on his way out – – – or do/say nothing at all?
Don’t the actions of this group of the “top 20 players” (and what has resulted since their secret meeting) demonstrate that there was, in fact, a whole other way Phil COULD have gone about things…. if he’ hadn’t decided to just be, ya know, “FIGJAM Phil”?
I just hate the whole “jumped on a grenade” image…. that implies selflessness, something that most definitely wasn’t leading the way for Phil in all this.

      • Brandon

        Aug 27, 2022 at 8:13 am

For all we know Phil was trying to get the ball rolling to change the status quo on tour for years. And I’m not implying that Phil is some kind of a selfless hero, but he went from one of the most beloved golfers of all time to being a pariah in the span of about a month. I obviously think he had his own best interests in mind first and foremost, but the end result is that all players with full exemption benefit.

I don’t agree with Rory’s assessment of the situation. I don’t think any of that collaboration of the PGA players would have taken place unless LIV golf, Mickelson, Norman, and the players who left to LIV made public statements and actions about the issues on the PGA tour and improvements to the PGA tour. The PGA tour would have just gone on as business as usual.

I think all the PGA players should be apologizing and thanking Mickelson, Norman, and LIV golf for all the big time money they are going to get now on the PGA tour. Perhaps buy Mickelson and Norman new yachts. Lol.

For a guy that’s made incredible money and had so much success, Norman comes off like such a fragile, petty, small man. Whoever handles his PR is asleep at the wheel.

Truly, if there is to be any sort of compromise or understanding between LIV and the PGA, step #1 is to get rid of Greg. He’s just toxic at this point.

  25. Jolter

It is one thing to defend the Tour, but Rory and any other player who criticizes other players should be careful with their words, as who knows what will happen a couple years down the road if the LIV players are allowed back into the Tour for one reason or another.

If you don’t think a 6-time major winner, with over 45 pga tour events and is a hall of fame member earned the right, we’ll disagree. For almost 20 years Phil Mickelson was easily the second most popular golfer on tour. Why? Because he has charisma and took risks on shots, some that he made and some he missed. By comparison with most of todays players, who play robotic golf, with no flair or personality. It’s boring and instead of scheduling my work week around when Phil would play, I’m now just a casual view, rather than a longtime fan.

Former NBA star turned college golfer J.R. Smith taking lessons from Tiger’s ex-coach

Published

on

Former NBA player J.R. Smith is now taking golf lessons from Tiger Woods’ former coach, Chris Como.

The lessons can be seen on the new show “Private Lessons” on the premium subscription of GolfPass.

Of his lessons with Como, Smith said, “For me, I think the most appealing part (about taking a lesson from Como) was about like how fast the transition for him to understand. Like, obviously, everybody doesn’t think the same,” he added, “but to make to feel certain sensations in the golf swing.”

The two-time NBA Champion made $90 million as a basketball player but signed an NIL deal as a golfer in early 2022.

In addition to working with Tiger Woods and Smith, Como has also worked with Bryson DeChambeau, who won the 2020 U.S. Open under his guidance.

LIV pro’s wife takes vicious swipe at Tiger Woods over his car accident

Published

on

It’s been a year of drama and controversies in the golfing world, with the divide between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf showing no signs of improving.

Much of the bad blood between the two has played out off the course, and that is once again the case this week, as the wife of prominent LIV golfer Pat Perez, Ashley, took a vicious swipe at Tiger Woods over his single-car accident in 2021.

On Tuesday, Golf Balling shared a video on its Instagram account where Woods described his physical limitations following his car crash. In the comments, Ashley Perez decided to share her take, saying:

“Literally why driving under the influence is ILLEGAL. I don’t feel bad for him. Thank god he didn’t kill anyone. See ya.”

The comment has since been deleted, and it is not the first time Ashely has targeted PGA Tour golfers either. Back in September, Patrick Cantlay, Xander Schauffele and their respective partners took a trip to the Napa Valley, which they posted on Instagram.

However, the trip apparently did not impress Mrs Perez, who shared, before once again deleting, her take on the vacation:

It’s been a wild year for the Perez’s on and off the course. The 46-year-old LIV pro earned $8,024,167 with the breakaway tour in 2022, primarily thanks to being part of the 4 Aces GC team.

While off the course, Perez spoke about his deep ‘hate’ for Phil Mickelson, accusing Lefty of committing an “uncrossable and unforgivable act” against him.

Following this latest drama, it’s likely safe to say that any relationship Perez once had with Tiger may well now be a thing of the past.

Is this the most ingenious caddie move you’ve seen?

Published

on

Our PGA Tour reporter, Andrew Tursky was on site in the Bahamas at last week’s Hero World Challenge, and he spotted something interesting. I’ll let AT take it from here.

“As a former club caddie myself, I fully respect this move from an Albany caddie during the pro-am. Instead of writing down the players approximate yardages in a yardage book or on piece of paper, he writes them down on a square slab and velcros it to his caddie bib for instant visual access.”

“This is a true veteran move. I’m questioning the yardage gapping for that particular player, because something seems off, but the point is that it’s a great caddie trick regardless.”

It’s a brilliant technique. A “why didn’t I think of that” caddie hack. Well played.

GolfWRX will be on location at at the QBE Shootout, so look out for more WITBs and inside-the-ropes photos soon!
