‘Bullsh*t of an excuse’ – Tennis legend blasts ‘pathetic’ LIV Golf players

Published

on

On the eve of the RBC Canadian Open and the Scandinavian Mixed events on either side of the water, the LIV Golf International Series continues to hog the headlines.

Impossible to ignore, it seems everyone has a view on the moral rights, or wrongs, of taking part in the Saudi-backed series, and current and former sports legends are of no exception.

Martina Navratilova, 18-time Grand Slam champion, was prompted to make her views known after Graeme McDowell’s response to one reporter’s question this week.

Under intense scrutiny at the press conference, G-Mac was asked about the controversial Saudi funding and admitted that the “Khashoggi situation was reprehensible,” before saying that “we are proud to help Saudi if they want to use golf to get to where they want to be.”

The nine-time Wimbledon ladies champion didn’t hide her feelings and called the comments, “pathetic”, adding, in frustration, “How exactly is golf going to help women in Saudi?!”

Explaining further her view on political morals over cash, the nine-time Wimbledon champ made clear her own experiences when invited to play at a controversial event.

“In the 80’s, Chris (Evert) and I were offered a lot of money to play an exhibition in South Africa and we refused. Something called #principle made that an easy decision,” she wrote, before saying “I am so disappointed with my fellow athletes for doing this… seems everybody has a price.”

And so it goes on…..

Lol at all these idiots who have never paid one bit of attention to the fact that the DP World Tour, in conjunction with the PGA Tour, has been playing golf in Dubai, South Africa, and Russia for ages. But NOW it’s reprehensible. Brainwashed dum-dums.

I have to agree with you. Martina is as qualified as anyone to comment of this “situation” Character and integrity used to stand for something. But to paraphrase Martina, seems almost everyone has a price.

I don’t believe these guys have thought this through though. Apparently, the LIV Tour has applied for OWRP though the Asian Tour. But LIV is an invitational Tour, with 54 hole events, and a shotgun start it feels more like a member-member than anything else. What points could they possible expect to earn in a format like LIV’s?

It’ll also be interesting to see if LIV will have any effect on equipment and clothing contracts. I’m sure TaylorMade and Adidas pay DJ an obscene amount of money because he’s going to play 15-20 events on the PGA Tour. 8 events in the LIV Tour hardly gives them the same ROI.

Then of course, we all know the Saudis are notorious for not paying their bills so what happens when the Saudis have decided they’ve had enough and take their money and go home? The PGA Tour will hardly welcome them with open arms. Nor should they.

CLEARLY, forums have many demented folks posting ignorance because they’re too indoctrinated to see the ENTIRE picture. EVERY pro golfer, male, or female SHOULD be FREE to PLAY on ANY tour in the world with it being men vs. men and women vs. women competition. NO trans allowed since these are BIRTH gender created venues. IMHO, the tryannical PGA Tour boneheaded CEO made a HUGE mistake suspending and banning LIV participants from their STALE and rip-off golf tour and from what I see, only indoctrinated players have an issue with the LIV Tour. It’s so sad the world these days are LOADED with YDFC, uneducated morons who DON’T have a clue…

Look, it’s simple. Money makes the world go round, and pro golfers want as much as they can get for competing. They play one less round and there are no cuts, so it’s guaranteed money in their pockets. And on top of huge payouts, they’re on teams that make extra cash above and beyond the standard purse. The “tour” can say and do what they want to these so-called “rebels” resigning from their tour, but it is golf and people are going to watch these major winning players play golf. Period. ??????

Obviously, no one is stopping anyone who wants to play LIV golf so your comment is just ignorant.

In life, there are consequences for your actions. Play LIV golf is fine. No one is stopping anyone, but to expect the PGA Tour to still allow you the benefit of their organization makes it clear you are the fool or you lack any sense of self-respect.

When you get in bed with foul smelling, poop covered people and expect to wake up smelling like perfume, you are the moron, not the people who said this will cost you. Any of you that think Norman and MBS dont fit that description to a tee must be just like them. Both have long established histories accurately described by my assessment and personal experience.

Most of the responses on this page amply demonstrate the me first, screw you attitude that pervades America. It’s not surprising at all. You guys will screw anything that breathes, including yourselves.

I fully expect to be verbally assaulted for my comment soif it makes you feel like big strong powerful men bring it on losers. Feel free to shovel your manure at me. Have a nice day kids!

LIV pro dropped by two major sponsors after decision to join breakaway tour

Published

on

It may be only six events into existence, but some LIV players have found their sponsors dropping away quickly once they establish their ties to the Greg Norman-led series.

Amongst many others, Rocket Mortgage, Royal Bank of Canada and UPS have severed links to various players whilst Phil Mickelson – remember where this all started? – has found himself now devoid of sponsorship from all of Amstel, KPMG and Workday.

Now according to News9, surprise LIV player Anirban Lahiri has found himself dropped by two of his main sponsors, just days ahead of his third appearance on the tour, in Bangkok.

The Indian star, surely recruited for his mass appeal to the most populus democracy in the world, has already banked close to $2 million dollars in two starts following a decision to “have a life”:

However, the 35-year-old has now had his sponsorship deals severed by both Hero MotoCorp and Mastercard, two of the largest corporations on the continent, the former closely linked with anti-LIV golf legend Tiger Woods and his annual Hero World Challenge.

Ironically, the last of Lahiri’s seven professional victories came at the Hero Indian Open in 2015, but since then he admitted he has struggled with his work-life balance.

“It’s a new chapter in my life and one that I am really looking forward to. I have found the whole concept of LIV interesting and alluring,” Lahiri admitted to the Hindustan Times.

He added, “I see this as an effort to correct my work-life balance. I see this as a move back closer to my family and friends. I see this as something that gives me more time to enjoy my kids growing up. I know how consumed I was with my golf when Tisya (eldest daughter) was born and I was struggling to keep my card on the Tour at that time.”

‘Stop assuming you have all the answers’ – Olympic champ is the latest Australian to blast Greg Norman

Published

on

Sitting around a table, Team Australia look one happy family.

Compatriots Cam Smith, Matt Jones, Marc Leishman and Wade Ormsby join LIV CEO Greg Norman to answer questions and points sent in by LIV viewers. After the most recent Open championship winner tells his ‘boss’ that he’s “doing a great job”, they unite with a toast of beer cans.

All looks rosy in the camp, but not every Aussie feels the same.

One of Australia’s most notable athletes, Kieren Perkins, told the National Press Club that Norman should “stop and listen to the people around you,” and stop “assuming you have all the answers.”

The two-time gold Olympic gold medallist and multiple champion at the 1994 Commonwealth Games became the new CEO of the Australian Sports Commission in December 2021, overseeing Sport Australia and the Australian Institute of Sport, and recently commented that Australian sport needs to be a societal leader and be more inclusive of minority groups.

The publication asked Perkins what message he would give to Norman, head of the LIV organization that has received plenty of criticism over its ties to Saudi Arabia and its disruption of the sport’s ruling bodies.

“Just stop and listen to the people around you, Greg, and think about some of the stuff that’s being told to you,” said the Sport Australia Hall of Famer. “See if actually there’s some value in it, instead of assuming you have all the answers.”

Whilst empathizing with Norman’s view that he wishes to ‘grow the game’ Perkins has doubts about the methods used:  “I understand and appreciate the need to disrupt sport and make it better, and the opportunity to create more competitive pathways that help athletes receive the benefit they deserve, [but] opening the door for more inclusion is incredibly important.”

LIV Golf plays round six of an initial eight event season at Bangkok from Friday, with the season-ending Team Championship at Trump National Doral Miami set for the end of this month.

Report: LIV likely to win battle for world ranking points thanks to ‘strategic alliance’ with minor tour

Published

on

According to the Telegraph, LIV Golf has found a path to securing OWGR points.

The report indicates that LIV is forming a “strategic alliance” with the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) Tour. In theory, this would allow the players to earn world ranking points starting this week at LIV Bangkok.

In turn, the alliance with LIV will give the struggling MENA Tour a path to relevance. The current OWGR rule indicates that a tour must have the majority of it’s events with a cut. It would seem that the LIV events will be the in the minority of events plays, with the regular MENA Tour events starting to ramp back up after LIV Bangkok.

“No Laying Up” holds the opinion that this move by LIV won’t grant them OWGR points right away.

The OWGR has not released a statement as of yet regarding this turn of events.
