PGA to allow use of rangefinders and GPS devices at majors – GolfWRXers react
In our forums, our members have been reacting to the news that distance-measuring devices will be allowed in three professional major championships – the PGA Championship, KPMG Women’s PGA Championship and KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship beginning this year.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- heavy_hitter: “About time. Hope USGA follow suit.”
- TLUBulldogGolf: “At the very least, it should help on wayward shots. Getting the number isn’t what makes rounds slow, but I consider this a welcome change.”
- Hawkeye77: “Good for them. Let’s see what happens and collect some data. Faster? Slower? Same? I don’t really care much about any of those answers for pros, but I’m curious to see what the experiences are.”
- tw_focus: “If it speeds up play, then I’m all for it. I’m skeptical that it will speed up play, but let’s see how it goes. It’s just one event to start.”

What are practice rounds and preparation for anymore? Ok cool, no more caddies, carry your own clubs boys.

First golfdom started satellite mapping of courses.
Then, the BlueGolf system for determining shot distances from hole maps arrived.
Basically, personal responsibility for find point-to-point yardage has gone away. Don’t know if I like it, but that’s where we are.
TLUBulldogGolf had interesting point on determining distances to pin for wayward shots.

I see a lot of negativity about this and I wonder why? How will it effect you as a fan if your favorite player uses a rangefinder? Correct, it won’t.

Incorrect. I don’t wanna hear DeChambeau say “shoot that tree, now shoot that flag in the distance, now shoot that chick in the dress, now shoot that front lip of the furthest back bunker on the left of the flag half way between that tree and the girl in the dress”.

Honestly not sure how I feel about this. Genuinely mixed emotions. Will caddies get paid less ? I can see the logic that’ll speed up okay but in reality I’d it slows play down will they reverse it ? Make no mistake , a lot of players use that time when working out the yardage to focus their mind and calm their breathing down. They won’t want to lose that window
