The average driving distance for male amateur golfers by age

Published

on

Earlier this week we took a look at the average driving distance for male amateur golfers in each handicap range, and it got many of our members curious as to how the average driving distance would look if it were broken down by age.

Well, thanks to Arccos Golf, we can take a look at that.

Arccos Golf conducted an annual study culminating in the company’s distance report published in February, which included the average driving distance of amateur golfers in different age categories.

The data is based on the average taken from over 26 million shots hit from golfers from scratch level to a 25 index. Here are the findings for 2019:

Average Driving Distance By Age in 2019:

  • 10-19: 234.2 yards
  • 20-29: 239.7 yards
  • 30-39: 233.7 yards
  • 40-49: 225.9 yards
  • 50-59: 215.4 yards
  • 60-69: 204.5 yards
  • 70+: 190.4 yards

For clarification purposes, the yardages above are based on total roll-out numbers, not just carry.

I wish this was also done by handicap 🙂

LOL…Was that an April Fools early/late joke! Oh, Arccos was involved! That makes a difference! Their system is a JOKE! Inaccurate, unreliable, a COMPLETE waste of money, both buying the junk and subscribing to it! I’m surprised Golf WRX, which I consider an excellent source for equipment information, stoops so low to let this POS company’s information shove this misinformation in our faces!

I’m 48 years old and fly it 280 off the tee. I think these stats are for the average public course dude.

My husband is 57 years old and his tee shots are on average 260 yards and has hit some 300 yards but those are rare. Our son is 35 and his drives are on average 310 yards and that is on a bad day. I wish I could hit my drive even close to the stats but oh well.

310 average on a bad day? What college program does he play for?

As opposed to the country club snob such as yourself?

What an arrogant, stupid statement, implying that a public course golfer hits it shorter..
      Absolutely clueless.

That chart has to be wrong. I’m 99 years old and getting 300+ yards uphill into a 30mph wind with no roll.

I’m 105, I walk 20 miles to the course each way and play with a spoon, niblick and my Billy Baroo using featheries….I hit it about 375 with a slight fade. Never shot over par.

You tell that to the young kids today and they don’t believe you.

Seems about 20-25 yards shorter than what the avid golfer would hit.

What about the average Golfwrx player?

This can’t be accurate. I fit people everyday that claim they hit it “265-275 yards, but when I hit is good, it’s over 300.” Don’t even get me started about Golfwrx guys…

Awesome!! This proves what many chicks told me through the years. I am way above average! =)

      Agree.
The GolfWrx crowd are usually the blowhards who cant keep it out of the woods

That would be me. I usually hit it pretty solidly (drove a 311 yard hole this spring) but routinely hit it solidly into the trees. Cured my fade/slice with a newly found (and hopefully soon to be gone) pull/pull-hook. Actually have a decent short game and can putt but it’s Forrest Gump off the tee.

Well, I don’t know about Arcccos golf, But I hit a 9 degree TaylorMade M6 270 yards carry. I’m 57 years old. No shit. I’m feeling pretty good.

Broad generalizations that ring true for me: Drove it 240 yards at 20 & 200 yards at 60.

This info is semi-interesting but really useless to any individual. It doesn’t matter how far people drive it, it only matters how far YOU drive it.

Makes no difference what tees you hit from in determining avg distance. Excluding a whole bunch of golfer’s over 25 hdcp does

My question is: are these stats based on using a driver only?;are par 3s included?

I really hate when they say average. We’d all get a lot more out of the median. Think of all the duffed shots figured into this…

Yes playing from the correct tee is a lot more fun however seniors who played from a course rating of 71 have to surrender two shots to a player teeing from a course rating of 73, playing the course with the course rating of 73 is a couple hundred yards longer so to be fair the shorter course player has to surrender the two shots this is per instructions from the USGA handicap system go to usga.org for further clarification.

These figs look spot on to me.
If one plays the correct tees, distance is not their priority. Keeping it in play and leaving one’s self in position to score, is.
I’ve played and taken pointers from two friends of mine that are/were PGA teaching pros. Both say “no, you can’t hit it as far as your believe”.
Best advice…..Leave ego in parking lot.

All the more reason for people to play from the correct tee box. It’s no fun being unable to teach a par 4 in reg if you hit 2 good shots. Leave your ego in the bedroom. You still have to chip and putt. Pats and birdies are fun

Precisely! I consider the choice of tees both a test of intelligence and humility.

Ok, now do a cross-tabulation (2-way table) showing the average driving distance for handicap x age.

Rory McIlroy hits back at stinging criticism from Tom Weiskopf

Published

on

Rory McIlroy recently came under attack from the 1973 Open champion Tom Weiskopf, and it has prompted a passionate response from the Ulsterman.

Earlier this week, Tom Weiskopf spoke to GolfWeek where he claimed he didn’t feel Rory McIlroy had it in him to add more than one major championship to his current tally, citing a lack of determination, as well as laying into the 4-time major champion’s putting.

“I look at Rory McIlroy and I think golf is something just for Rory to do. I’ve said it for a while now that I don’t think he’ll win much more than the four he’s got, or maybe five, because I don’t see that determination and will to be the best. I think it is there in Dustin Johnson. I think he finally figured it out and this could propel him to win all four in one year.

I don’t see any frustration. Life is good and it should be – he’s a multi, multi-millionaire and has a kid now – but I don’t see the Tiger attitude. It’s like he’s satisfied all the time. The guy is not a good putter. He can hit some putts so off line with the wrong speed. He’s technically not a good putter but one of the purest swings you’d ever want to watch play in the game. Technically, he’s superior to Dustin Johnson, but Dustin has the confidence to do it every time.

“I know Rory works out but I bet if you watched them both work out, Rory would be a lot of laughs and giggles and Dustin would be balls to the wall and forcing a little bit more on himself and that’s what he’s done.”

It’s a perspective that did not pass McIlroy by, who speaking to GolfWeek dismissed the criticism as not being a “fair assessment” and declared how he tries his heart out on every shot.

“I’ve never met Tom Weiskopf in my life, he’s never met me, so he’s obviously making a statement based on what he sees from the outside, but I don’t think that’s a fair assessment. I’ve shown throughout my career that I care, that I want to win, that I want to be the best. And I’ve been the best.

It’s not as if I’m out there in the clouds and not thinking about it. I try my heart out on every single shot, every single tournament that I play.”

The 31-year-old also brought attention to a club snap moment at the Zozo recently as evidence of how he can become frustrated on the course.

“I maybe deal better with disappointment than I used to. I saw the interview where he said he sees no frustration. Like, I don’t think that’s a bad thing. I mean, look at the Zozo. I’m breaking clubs, so there’s a bit of frustration there. Obviously, he didn’t watch that round of golf.”
