Forum Thread of the Day: “New Titleist golf balls are out on Tour for testing”

Published

on

Today’s Forum Thread of the Day concerns new Titleist golf balls that are out on Tour for testing. Our members have been discussing what they hope to see from the new additions from Titleist, with many predicting an update to the brand’s AVX ball.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • getair23: “Seems a little early for a Pro V1 replacement, I wouldn’t be surprised to hear that they are looking to tweak the AVX.”
  • Canoe Paddler: “To me, the AVX is the perfect ball, especially in the cooler months. If Titleist is tweaking the AVX, I hope it’s an addition to the line and not a replacement.”
  • pga43: “I asked the PGA Tour Rep for Titleist golf balls whether any PGA Tour pro had ever played with the AVX on Tour and he said “NO!”. He said some of the PGA Club Pros on the Titleist staff play them, but no PGA Pro has played one in a PGA Tour event.”
  • 518TitleistX: “I’m willing to bet it’s one of the prototypes we got to hit/test at Manchester Lane. Think higher flight like a V1x and slightly lower spin like a V1 with a feel somewhere between the 2 of them off driver with phenomenal ball speeds. If it is indeed what I’m thinking, I’ll be buying a lifetime supply.”

It’s so interesting to closely watch Titleist, and their marketers, and their paid staff, talk about stuff like this when it is first released.

From a legal/corporate perspective, Titleist is acutely aware that if they say, “Our pros tell us that they are hitting this new Pro V1 a lot farther,” they are going to run straight into golf’s ruling bodies, whose Joint Statement of Principles stated, “The R&A and the USGA believe, however, that any further significant increases in hitting distances at the highest level are undesirable. Whether these increases in distance emanate from advancing equipment technology, greater athleticism of players, improved player coaching, golf course conditioning or a combination of these or other factors, they will have the impact of seriously reducing the challenge of the game. The consequential lengthening or toughening of courses would be costly or impossible and would have a negative effect on increasingly important environmental and ecological issues. Pace of play would be slowed and playing costs would increase.

“The R&A and the USGA will consider all of these factors contributing to distance on a regular basis. Should such a situation of meaningful increases in distances arise, the R&A and the USGA would feel it immediately necessary to seek ways of protecting the game.”

What’s the perfect mini-driver/shaft combo? – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing Mini-Drivers and accompanying shafts. WRXer ‘JamesFisher1990’ is about to purchase a BRNR Mini and is torn on what shaft weight to use, and our members have been sharing their thoughts and set ups in our forum.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • PARETO: “New BRNR at 13.5. Took it over to TXG (Club Champ but TXG will always rule) in Calgary for a fit. Took the head down to 12, stuck in a Graphite Design AD at 3 wood length and 60g. Presto- numbers that rivaled my G430Max but with waaaaay tighter dispersion. Win.”
  • driveandputtmachine: “Still playing a MIni 300.  The head was only 208, so I ordered a heavier weight and play it at 3 wood length.  I am playing a Ventus Red 70.   I play 70 grams in my fairways.  I use it mainly to hit draws off the tee.  When I combine me, a driver, and trying to hit a draw it does not work out well most of the time.  So the MIni is for that. As an aside, I have not hit the newest BRNR, but the previous model wasn’t great off the deck.  The 300 Mini is very good off the deck.”
  • JAM01: “Ok, just put the BRNR in the bag along side a QI10 max and a QI10 3 wood. A load of top end redundancy. But, I have several holes at my two home courses where the flight and accuracy of the mini driver helps immensely. Mine is stock Proforce 65 at 13.5, I could see a heavier shaft, but to normal flex, as a nice alternative.”
