Rickie Fowler to put Cobra King F8+ driver into play and unveil new “P Cap”
Fashion icon and one of the world’s most popular golfers, Rickie Fowler, will unleash a new look this week at the 2017 Hero World Challenge. Known for his orange-fitted Puma hat when he came on Tour, Fowler has recently brought the “snapback back” to golf, as rapper Tyga would say. This year, he’ll be rocking a more simplified look from Puma, with a lone “P” on his colorful snapbacks.
Fowler is also putting Cobra’s new King F8+ driver (in the “Nardo” gray colorway) into play this week; the driver is notable for its CNC-milled face that’s designed to effectively lower CG (center of gravity), enhance durability, and lower spin rates.
Here’s the setup Fowler will be going with at the Hero this week, according to Cobra:

Did Rory McIlroy inspire Shane Lowry’s putter switch?
Editor’s note: This is an excerpt from a piece our Andrew Tursky originally wrote for PGATour.com’s Equipment Report. Head over there for the full article.
The timing of Lowry’s putter changeup was curious: Was he just using a Spider putter because he was paired with McIlroy, who’s been using a Spider Tour X head throughout 2024? Was Lowry just being festive because it’s the Zurich Classic, and he wanted to match his teammate? Did McIlroy let Lowry try his putter, and he liked it so much he actually switched into it?
Well, as it turns out, McIlroy’s only influence was inspiring Lowry to make more putts.
When asked if McIlroy had an influence on the putter switch, Lowry had this to say: “No, it’s actually a different putter than what he uses. Maybe there was more pressure there because I needed to hole some more putts if we wanted to win,” he said with a laugh.
To Lowry’s point, McIlroy plays the Tour X model, whereas Lowry switched into the Tour Z model, which has a sleeker shape in comparison, and the two sole weights of the club are more towards the face.
Lowry’s Spider Tour Z has a white True Path Alignment channel on the crown of his putter, which is reminiscent of Lowry’s former 2-ball designs, thus helping to provide a comfort factor despite the departure from his norm. Instead of a double-bend hosel, which Lowry used in his 2-ball putters, his new Spider Tour Z is designed with a short slant neck.
“I’ve been struggling on the greens, and I just needed something with a fresh look,” Lowry told GolfWRX.com on Wednesday at the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship. “It has a different neck on it, as well, so it moves a bit differently, but it’s similar. It has a white line on the back of it [like my 2-ball], and it’s a mallet style. So it’s not too drastic of a change.
“I just picked it up on the putting green and I liked the look of it, so I was like, ‘Let’s give it a go.’”

I like the fact that Ricky is hitting a 43.5″ driver. I am a fitter and try to explain to customers that sometimes it is better to hit a shorter driver, especially if you have better control and can hit the center of the face more often. Virtually all the drivers on the rack are 45.5″ and too long for most players. Just because it is longer doesn’t mean the ball will go farther…you’ve gotta hit it square and on the sweet spot. Getting fit to enjoy the game and play better is so important.

Wow, that’s really good to know. I bought a new driver recently but have never been fitted before…although the technology is way better than my nine-year old driver I was previously gaming, I have more trouble hitting it dead-center with frequency. It also feels different, but I’m sure that’s just because the shaft is completely different than my old one (both were straight off the shelf). Where do you recommend I get “fitted”? I know all the franchise stores offer this service, but if I’m going to pay to get fitted I want to make sure it’s with an expert at fitting. I will also ask for 43.5* shaft since I think that’s a fantastic idea for hitting it dead-center more often. Thanks so much!
