WRXers discuss Phil going full Mickelson with Ryder Cup criticisms

3fe0439e8c488aef9533649435d75ae8

User chrismikayla started a thread about Phil Mickelson’s comments regarding the setup at the Tour Championship not being good preparation for the Ryder Cup (i.e. long rough), as well as his remarks about the process of selecting final captain’s pick. And before the thread even hit three pages of replies, Lefty was at the microphone again with additional criticism, this time from Hazeltine.

Phil essentially threw 2004 Ryder Cup captain Hal Sutton under the bus when discussing the importance of the captaincy in the Ryder Cup, saying Sutton should have told him/Tiger Woods sooner that they’d be paired together in foursomes play so they could practice with one another’s golf balls.

Sutton has since responded, telling Phil he ought to focus on the task at hand, not what happened 12 years ago. Mickelson has since apologized. Some hot takes on a hot situation in this one. Check out the thread.

TW’s shoes: Love ‘em? Hate ‘em?

GolfWRX is on site at Hazeltine, and there are plenty of galleries of on-course and inside the ropes in the forums. With Tiger Woods returning to the public sphere for the longest sustained period of time in more than a year, he’ll attract plenty of attention.

Case in point: This widely viewed thread about the Nike footwear El Tigre was strolling the driving range in (please refrain from any comparisons to the Curry 2 Low “Chef Curry”).

See the shoes, read the thread.

The ole “tour issue” question

29506fb0c0b85ec2072bbbeaf4210246

User PerservingGolf has dedicated a thread to something equipment enthusiasts have wondered about for years: Why can’t we buy the same equipment Dustin Johnson or Jordan Spieth plays? Beyond an explanation for why companies don’t release limited runs of “tour issue” stuff, the thread gets to the heart of the question: How similar are the clubs that the aforementioned DJ and Jordan Spieth are playing to the off-the-rack models?

Good discussion of an age-old — or at least decade-old — question.

Check out the thread.

Everyday (golf) carry

blue chip

If you’re familiar with the pocketdump blog (now a website too) Everyday Carry, in which men photograph/obsess about what they carry daily in their pockets, you’ll appreciate this thread. Simple concept: Answer the question “What do you carry in your pockets when you play golf?”

The responses, and the logic, might surprise you.

Asking the big questions…

In addition to topics of more minor significance, the GolfWRX forums are also a place where the big issues in the game are debated. User MaccaRayDudley writes:

“The number of active golfers has dropped back to the pre-Tiger Woods level. The number of active golfers has dropped by about 7 million players since 2005.  The world’s largest golf retailer (Golfsmith) is on the verge of bankruptcy and the two largest sports equipment companies (Adidas and Nike) have both decided to divest themselves of their golf [equipment] businesses. The golf industry is in a lot of trouble.”

Referencing the cost of the game as a major impediment in the U.S., MaccaRay asks for community takes on the decline in participation and WRXers don’t disappoint.

Whining about nonsense like that – flat out overthinking it tothe point it’s still in his head -Whining about wanting to be paid, how much money the wives & GF’s got for their champagne limo mall shopping day, whining about the shirts & waterproof gear about as waterproof as Bounty is why we kept getting waxed. When I heard that this year I thought we’d get smoked again.

He should have known there was no way they WOULDN’T have been paired together and reached out IF it was such a big deal

Phil was being honest and I have no problem with it. Hal Sutton’s explanation on why he paired Tiger & Phil together illuminates his inadequacies as a captain.

Most forgiving players irons? – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing players irons. WRXer ‘NorthTXGolf’ is on the hunt for some new irons but is putting a priority on forgiveness, and has reached out to fellow members who have been sharing their thoughts and advice on the subject in our forum.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • Sam217: “i230 has got to be one of the most forgiving players irons available. Cobra King Tour another. Don’t sleep on the New Level 480 DB coming out soon.”
  • RangeBaller: “ZX5/ZX7 and i230 should definitely be in your testing pool.”
  • YAMS49: “Another I210 homie here… Very highly recommended if you want/need spin and a consistent yardage.”
  • golf-RN: “I second the Cobra King Tour irons. I am not the greatest ballstriker by any stretch of the imagination and I find the King Tours very forgiving. Toe strikes might lose 5 or 6 yards with no directional loss. You definitely feel the miss though lol but mishits from the center aren’t punished too hard regarding distance.”

What’s the perfect mini-driver/shaft combo? – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing Mini-Drivers and accompanying shafts. WRXer ‘JamesFisher1990’ is about to purchase a BRNR Mini and is torn on what shaft weight to use, and our members have been sharing their thoughts and set ups in our forum.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • PARETO: “New BRNR at 13.5. Took it over to TXG (Club Champ but TXG will always rule) in Calgary for a fit. Took the head down to 12, stuck in a Graphite Design AD at 3 wood length and 60g. Presto- numbers that rivaled my G430Max but with waaaaay tighter dispersion. Win.”
  • driveandputtmachine: “Still playing a MIni 300.  The head was only 208, so I ordered a heavier weight and play it at 3 wood length.  I am playing a Ventus Red 70.   I play 70 grams in my fairways.  I use it mainly to hit draws off the tee.  When I combine me, a driver, and trying to hit a draw it does not work out well most of the time.  So the MIni is for that. As an aside, I have not hit the newest BRNR, but the previous model wasn’t great off the deck.  The 300 Mini is very good off the deck.”
  • JAM01: “Ok, just put the BRNR in the bag along side a QI10 max and a QI10 3 wood. A load of top end redundancy. But, I have several holes at my two home courses where the flight and accuracy of the mini driver helps immensely. Mine is stock Proforce 65 at 13.5, I could see a heavier shaft, but to normal flex, as a nice alternative.”

Why Ludvig Aberg is my new favorite player – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing one of the new sensations in the world of golf – Ludvig Aberg. The 24-year-old finished solo second at the Masters a couple of weeks ago, and gained many plaudits, including from several WRXers.

One member, RoyalMustang, took to the forums to explain why Aberg is now their favorite player, saying:

“I loved the way the Ludvig was out there, having a great time, not taking himself or the situation too seriously. Even after the double at 11, he was like “well, that’s golf!” Loose and relaxed: that’s the way to play. It’s obvious he loves what he’s doing, he loves the big moments, and he loves being a part of it all.

Arnold Palmer was viewed that way. Just like Brooks Robinson was forever viewed as not just a great baseball player, but a great human being and friend to Baltimore.”

And our members have been reacting and sharing their positive takes on the young Swede.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • redfirebird08: “Ludvig has a great attitude, a great smile, and a great golf swing.”
  • otto6457: “I’m very lucky to have talked with Ludde several times at the Rawls Course at Texas Tech.  He’s a truly nice guy and very friendly.  Always said hello when we passed each other in the club house and was always smiling. Watching him hit balls on the range was a joy.  He has “that sound” and trajectory to die for.  There were many times he was out on the range in 30+ mph winds just hitting the most beautiful shots that just seemed to ignore the wind.  World class ball striker. And yes……..I am a fan boy.”
  • konklifer: “I like him. In an era of endless waggles and laboring, his swing and pace of play are a joy to watch.
