   Someone straighten me out on this. Why are they calling a 21* wood a 5 wood? I have an older TM V-Steel 7 wood and it is at 21* My V-Steel 5 wood is 18* and so is my older Adams GT 5 wood. Now all of my old persimmon 5 woods check out at 21*. So I am sorta confused here.

     Simply because that is what TM stamps on the bottom… They make High Launch (HL) lofts in their woods just like his 17* 3 wood that is also in the above list. The fact that there is literally no standard in golf equipment is what makes it so confusing for many golfers who are not “gear junkies” and are looking at equipment and trying to make comparisons across brands so difficult. It’s not just lofts but lengths and lie angles as well. I worked in the retail side of golf for over 5 years and this is one of the most frustrating aspects for both the consumer and the sales person. Lofts back in the days of persimmon clubs were routinely higher throughout the bag. The only exception was in the driver and three wood which were relatively the same (9-11* & 14-16* respectively). Then you would see a jump in the 5 wood to 19-22* depending on the players gapping needs and club characteristic preferences. Back then there was a commonly agreed upon “standard” as well when it came to length, lie, lofts which stayed fairly true and consistent until only 10-12 years ago. Then the large technology jumps occurred in woods technology, most readily noticed, and the major manufacturers began the quest for ultimate distance through “hot” faces and lightweight strong graphite shafts in place of heavy steel. And voila the era of distance over everything began. Now we have irons with woods tech built into the faces, the length is increased, and the lofts are “jacked” in order for an OEM to say “our 6 iron is the longest in golf” despite the fact that the loft of said 6 iron is more in line with a 4 or even a 3 iron of just a couple decades ago. I can’t tell you how many people I would perform fittings for and they would choose the club that gave them the longest shot in the session over consistency every day… Sorry for the long reply but this topic always gets me. 🙂

       I also hate how many different car models are available today. Why can’t it just be simple like offering a Model T in black only?! Car dashboards look like the space shuttle, with a button to do this and that & everything in between. Have we as a society gotten so lazy that we can’t roll down our own windows or plan out our next trip with a real map? I mean map quest was terrible but at least it wasn’t as bad as these in-car navigation systems. Talk about lazy. I also cannot comprehend why they have so many versions of television sets. My black & white RCA is always reliable especially after i invested in the bunny ear antennas. Why on earth would anyone need high definition to the tune of 1080p or 4k? Is the picture upgrade REALLY worth the $? Not to this guy. The way I see it, EVERYTHING should stay exactly as it was 50 years ago & we’d all be better off!
