Greenbrier Classic cancelled in the wake of heavy flooding
There hasn’t been a PGA Tour event cancelled since 2009, when the now-Sanderson Farms Championship was stricken from the schedule due to heavy flooding.
Unfortunately, that streak is over in a serious and sobering way. Updating our report from Friday: The PGA Tour and Greenbrier officials announced today that the Greenbrier Classic has been cancelled due to record rainfalls and massive flooding in the region.
PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem said in a statement:
“We are heartbroken by the devastation that the residents of West Virginia are experiencing at this time and the reports of lives lost due to the terrible flooding, Cancelling The Greenbrier Classic is certainly the most prudent course of action as our foremost concern is the well-being of those who are having to live through this tragic situation. Our thoughts and prayers are with them…We know we will have the opportunity to return again next year and we look forward to that time. But for now, that is of secondary concern. The priority is safety of the residents and their recovery from this disaster.”
“All of our focus needs to be on helping all of the people of our great State. So many have lost loved ones, their homes, and have no place to go,” added Jim Justice, owner of The Greenbrier.
The Greenbrier Classic was added to the Tour calendar in 2010 in a six-year agreement with the White Sulphur Springs resort. In 2010, Justice and company signed a six-year extension to host the tournament through 2021.
The PGA Tour calendar will now have an open week ahead of the British Open at Royal Troon, July 14 through 17.

why haven’t the players and the PGA sorted out a charity event to fill in that weekend to raise money for the flood victims? We don’t need a vacant weekend!

Very sad day for the state, much rebuilding ahead. I’m sure they will have to bring in tons of dirt to rebuild some of the Greenbrier. It may not look the same next year.
