Tiger Woods selected as vice captain for the 2016 Ryder Cup

Published

on

U.S. Ryder Cup Team Captain Davis Love III has appointed Tiger Woods, Jim Furyk and Steve Stricker as vice captains for the 2016 Ryder Cup at Hazeltine National Golf Club, joining Tom Lehman who was named as his assistant captain earlier this year.

Woods, who has undergone multiple back surgeries in 2015, has played in seven Ryder Cup events (1997, ’99, 2002, ’04, ’06, ’10, ’12) and is a member of the infamous Ryder Cup task force. He bowed out publicly from the Captain’s selection process in 2014 due to injury, and did not qualify for the Presidents Cup in 2015, which he’s played in eight times. Despite recent health setbacks and being selected as vice captain, however, Woods still hopes to qualify for the team as a player, according to a release.

“I’d like to thank Davis for his confidence in me and for my selection as a Ryder Cup Vice Captain. This is something I want to do,” Woods said in a release. “I will continue to do whatever I can to help win the Cup back. Once I’m fully healthy, I’d like to try to make the team too, but either way, I’m very excited to work with Davis, the other Vice Captains and the players to get a U.S. victory.”

Love III made the announcement on Wednesday at Sea Island Golf Club, where he’s hosting the 2015 RSM Classic. The 2016 U.S. Captain had this to say about his decision to select Woods, and what his role will be in the process:

“Tiger wants to be a playing assistant. That’s his goal,” Love said. “Tiger is so excited about it. You saw what came from the Presidents Cup that he was calling and texting us about what was going on. He wants to make the team, don’t mistake. But he’s also committed to helping me. He wants to be the leader of his group. But he wants to do it from on the golf course. He doesn’t want to be the general in the room. He wants to be in the battle.”

The question is, what are the chances that Woods — who has a 13-17-3 career Ryder Cup record — will tee it up at Hazeltine as a playing assistant at the 2016 Ryder Cup?

Do you think Tiger Woods will qualify to play for the U.S. team in the 2016 Ryder Cup?

Edlrick should not play for his country. He is also not an exemplary character.

Mark, I said that exactly to my golf buddies…YOUR SO RIGHT!

Tiger at his best never figured out how to be a team player now he is the vice captain with his vises irony.

You notice how the Olympics Golf format is the standard 72 hole event done quietly with only 60 players instead of a more stressful, hoopla team event type matches? They knew they didn’t want to get in the way of the Ryder Cup. So cheesy how the PGA tries to run everything their way

It’s for the ratings. They know they can’t beat the Euros, so at least lets make people watch it, is how these guys think. And all the noise that Eldrick will cause and bring to the whole thing will unnerve the US team and that’s all folks

I hear Tiger is trying to get out of it. Says he jumped at the opportunity when he heard it involved VICE, thought it was one of his preferred vices instead of this captain thing

He has no interest in being the captain or vice captain. He wants to play, and as bad as he is/ recovering he knows his only ticket in is to coach.

I would like tapping Tigers thought process. He did win 14 and 6 amateur titles.

2013 player of the year. 8 wins 2010-2015. 2014-2015 were horrendus. You wouldnt want to sit down with Jack and learn about his thought process? Same thinking with Tiger. Who else would you want? Everyone loves Freddy?

Interesting to see if Tiger will be used as the scapegoat after USA lose another Ryder Cup.

if the ryder cup was in 2017 then i would have said yes because tiger would have a full year and some to recover but the odds aren’t in anyone’s favor no matter who you are to come back after this long and qualify for the 2016 ryder cup

if he came out and 2013’d it, then yeh he’d qualify for sure – after 14/15 most people would say they cant see it happening, but good luck!
