Tiger Woods chooses Chris Como as swing coach

Published

on

Tiger Woods has announced that Chris Como will be his next swing coach.

The announcement follows reports that Tiger has resumed hitting full shots after his latest bout with a back injury.

Who is Chris Como? Like former coach Hank Haney, Como teaches out of the Dallas, Texas area. Como, 37, is based at Gleneagles Country Club in nearby Plano. His former students include Trevor Immelman, Aaron Baddeley and Jamie Lovemark. Tiger parted company with former coach, Sean Foley, about three months ago.

I think Woods just needs to get out and play more… Obviously he has been hurt, but I think that the reps are more important than any bio-mechanics insight. Of course another set of eyes is never a bad thing… He’s gotta be humble and go dig his game out of the dirt and recognize the game owes him nothing. Tiger needs his own little renaissance.

Tiger is fu&#in hero in my eyes. He’s done more for promoting the game than anyone in history. I hope he comes back breaks Jack’s record and washes away all the historical stereotypes of golf.

I agree with Phil, tiger plays inferior equipment. It took a young guy like a year to tweak the clubs to his liking. His irons are still made by Muira. How many majors did tiger win with a method putter? And how many did he win with a Scotty? But tiger seems to be more interested in the money Nike pays than winning another major.

But Tiger already knew how to play golf at age 24 when he/warner bros wrote ‘How I play golf’. Given his age at the time there is more than a fair chance that it was one of Mr Como’s first ever golf books.

Lee Trevino said it best, “What are you letting anyone look at your swing for? You’re Tiger Woods!” Tiger could probably do better himself than with a swing coach. All the best players ever know their swing and tendencies better than anyone else ever could. They also know how to adjust within their swing model. Tiger seems to be seeking some swing nirvana that doesn’t exist.

    • Sanddog

      Nov 24, 2014 at 11:26 am

Lee Trevino also said another related thing best. When asked if he would consider hiring a swing coach, he replied, “I’ll hire one, if I find one who can beat me.” Hard to argue.

Boy this could be a disaster!! Chris is fascinated with biomechanics, torques and force vectors in the kinetic chain of the hand plane. Last thing Le Tigre needs in my opinion. He needs feels and mental pictures and get back to scoring. Paralysis through analysis

Why’s he need somebody to look at his swing so much? Doesn’t he have it by now to just go out and do? Again, he’ll be playing swing and not play golf. Why doesn’t he just admit that he’s done. He’s obviously lost his concentration or any interest in the game now, that he needs somebody there all the time to help him along, the poor lonely bugger. He’s fooked it all right up, hasn’t he, eh? No good coach, no good caddie, no good friends, no good wife. He just needs to go head to the mountains and meditate and also see a shrink and lock himself up inside the house and stay out of the media’s eyes, silly twonk, other than coming out to play.

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! I hope this is a joke. Tiger’s done for. His chronic injuries have kept him sidelined the good part of the past few years and the trend will continue as long as he is still using steroids. Must be nice living in denial about the transparency of this situation.

      • J

        Nov 23, 2014 at 12:26 pm

I hadn’t heard he used Steroids… Can’t you point out one piece of information that supports that statement…. Or are you just opening your mouth and spewing BS because of your failures at life? Just curious…

        • JL

          Nov 24, 2014 at 4:30 am

People just assume because he clearly looks like he has built a lot of muscle mass that he has used steroids. Doesn’t matter that he hasn’t tested positive, when the testing employed by the PGA can find even an ineffective antler spray.

        • Pat

          Nov 24, 2014 at 4:33 pm

LOL…I’ve accomplished more in my life than you ever have J. I have done long drive comps in Japan, am currently in the golf and fitness industry and make good money. As a result I have personal relationship with past pro athletes. Even if I explained how drug testing worked in pro sports, your tiny brain couldn’t comprehend it. No, actually your brain would shut down. I’ll keep it real simple. The drug testing on the PGA is a joke and the threshold of epi/test ratio is ridiculously high. Hgh and hgh inducing peptide testing is non-existant. The PGA would lose tons of money and sponsorships if they outed Tiger and some of the other guys that clearly juice. There was that nobody that got popped for using PEDs on tour a few years back. Of course you, the noob golfer have never head about this. I hope I dumbed it down for you, loser.

        • Tyler

          Nov 23, 2014 at 10:29 pm

Do you realize what would happen to the golf industry if it came out that Tiger was using steroids? I’m sure you could use your imagination. Take the 08 US Open for instance, how does a golfer playing at the hardest tournament in America win with a torn acl? It’s because he didn’t he was on the juice and had to fake an injury because he was getting suspended.

Love all the Tiger hating saying he’s done. Everyone forgets 2013. Winning player of the year with 5 wins including the Players championship. Golf is better with tiger. Everyone should hope he gets healthy and plays well because it means more money and more publicity for the game of golf, bottom line.

            Nov 24, 2014 at 4:40 pm

I wouldn’t be surprised if that was true, Tyler. They did that one segment on one of the shows on Golf Channel where a former Masters winner admitted he was on steroids during a short period of his career. Of course the majority of people here have their heads stuck in the sand and think golf is a clean sport, HAHA.

          Nov 24, 2014 at 4:37 pm

Go talk to a pro athlete. Oh yeah Scott, you don’t know any. I have personal relationship with an ex-line backer and a former pitcher who pitched for the Angels at the AAA level. You people make me laugh with your naive/simpleton though process.

I can’t argue that, but to call someone a joke with the roster and results Sean has produced is plain idiotic.
Also, its not like Tiger and Sean worked together in his prime, lets see how Tiger does in the next couple years before passing judgement on Sean, thats all I am saying

  28. Hobie

    Nov 22, 2014 at 6:30 pm

Does anyone know what Como’s philosophy on the swing is? Is he more similar to Foley, Haney, Butch?

    • B

      Nov 22, 2014 at 6:50 pm

Chris is more like Butch in terms of not changing a player’s swing, but instead tweaking the player’s own swing so he can play his best golf. However, Tiger really no longer ‘owns’ his own swing because Foley (in particular) changed Tiger’s swing to what he (Foley) wanted it to be. Hopefully Tiger go back to some form of his ‘own’ swing. Maybe he can…and if he can, that is what Tiger needs to do and then let Chris Como work from that point forward to tweak it. But, Tiger must be allowed to swing-his-swing (as Arnold would say), and ‘own’ his own swing. Maybe Chris can help Tiger accomplish that.

      • Hobie

        Nov 22, 2014 at 7:00 pm

Thanks for that info. I was hoping he was more like Butch. Tiger needs to go back to his “natural” swing and Chris can tweak it where it needs to be tweaked. Foley did an almost complete overhaul on Tigers swing which was dumb IMHO. You don’t completely change greatness, you make small adjustments.

I hope the time off helped Tiger forget those swing habits Foley instilled in him and he goes back to playing golf and not golf swing. He was way to mechanical, he needs to be natural. Anyway, hope he’s at 100% and the partnership works out; Tiger is good golf and I love watching him play.

Chris Como is gonna get a lot of support from the real fans and a lot of grief from the looky Lou’s. Until he gets fired, or does an obvious terrible job, I’m glad he’s on the team and that Tiger is going to be playing golf soon. Can’t wait for the Hero World Challenge.

Call me what you want, I just like watching the guy play golf and can’t see this as anything but a positive development in the story of Tigers return.

Chris is a super nice guy, but I believe he in way over his head and he’s in for a HUGE surprise with the demands that Tiger will no-doubt put on him. Chris will be in Florida a lot, and all over the U.S., and very likely the world, whenever Tiger demands it. I feel very sorry for the members at Gleneagles CC because Chris’ main focus now will be Tiger Woods, and definitely not the country club.

    • Pat

      Nov 22, 2014 at 5:58 pm

      +1

He will essentially be Tiger’s beck and call *****. He’ll soon find out that misery loves company. I remember Haney having a rough time when he was Tiger’s swing coach. More money doesn’t always equate to more success and happiness and he will find out the hard way. Good luck Como.

    • Phil

      Nov 22, 2014 at 7:12 pm

How would any of you guys know what Tiger would or would not need from Chris? Do we have some of Tiger’s inner circle here? Geez, some people just need to sit back watch what happens, good or bad!

      • Pat

        Nov 23, 2014 at 8:50 am

In case you haven’t noticed, Tiger demanded the same things out of all his former swing coaches. In the end, they all parted ways because of time demands, clash of personalities, Tiger’s temper tantrums, and being his instructor took a toll on their lives. What makes you think it’ll be any different this time around? Tiger is a pain in the *** to work with because of his overinflated ego.

        • Knobbywood

          Nov 23, 2014 at 12:12 pm

            Nov 23, 2014 at 10:14 pm

I’m sure Chris knows what he’s in for and doesn’t think this partnership will be like signing up a member for a 5 pack of lessons. One would hope he’s looked into the pros (money, fame) and cons (his time will be Tiger’s, media scrutiny) before joining Team Tiger….I for one hope things go well. Like him or not, Tiger is good for golf.
