Tiger makes late triple bogey, finishes on the cut line

Published

on

Tiger Woods started his second round at Royal Liverpool much like he finished it. That put the three-time British winner in jeopardy of missing his second cut in 18 appearances at the championship.

Woods’ rocky start included a double bogey at the first hole that he followed with a bogey at No. 2. While he steadied the ship with 14 consecutive pars, a triple bogey at No. 17 moved the golfer to six-over par for the round, a tournament total of 3-over that briefly put him outside the cut line.

Woods needed a birdie on No. 18 at Royal Liverpool, a par 5, to give himself a chance to play the weekend. He chose a fairway wood off the tee and hit a 2 iron to the green that finished right of the putting surface. Woods pitched to 6 feet and converted the birdie putt to keep his (distant) chance to win his 15th major championship intact.

While Woods excited the golf world with his opening round of 69, Friday’s round of 6-over 77 shows that Woods is playing more like the golfer who got off to the worst start of his career in 2014 than the one who won five times on the PGA Tour in 2013.

He is currently 14 shots behind leader Rory McIlroy (12-under), who has carded consecutive rounds of 66 at Royal Liverpool.

Tiger did well to make the cut. I love the way Steve Flesch and Chamblee talk about him like he’s a 20 handicap. He made the cut a month after rehab began on a major back surgery. Jeebus, what do they expect? I mean he does suck, he’s only won 104 professional events, 79 on the PGA Tour. Chamblee probably didnt make 79 cuts.

GolfWRX is on site this week at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, for the PGA Championship.

While we see fewer equipment changes and new gear seeding at major championships, we get a look at custom gear and looks into the bags of players we rarely see, which is just as exciting. In the case of the PGA Championship, this means a look at the gear some of the PGA Professionals who qualified for the tournament will be gaming, and LIV players, such as Jon Rahm and Patrick Reed.

Check out links to all our albums from Valhalla below and check back throughout the week as we continue to update.

GolfWRX is live this week at the Wells Fargo Championship as a field of the world’s best golfers descend upon Charlotte, North Carolina, hoping to tame the beast that is Quail Hollow Club in this Signature Event — only Scottie Scheffler, who is home awaiting the birth of his first child, is absent.

From the grounds at Quail Hollow, we have our usual assortment of general galleries and WITBs — including a look at left-hander Akshay Bhatia’s setup. Among the pullout albums, we have a look inside Cobra’s impressive new tour truck for you to check out. Also featured is a special look at Quail Hollow king, Rory McIlroy.

Be sure to check back throughout the week as we add more galleries.
