Only a few weeks removed from Henrik Stenson’s 2013-season-ending win at the Tour Championship, the 2013-2014 season of the PGA Tour is poised to begin with this week’s Frys.com Open. Nestled amidst the Santa Cruz Mountains, the Robert Trent Jones Jr.-designed CordeValle GC plays host to the inaugural event of the ’13-’14 season.

The 7,368 yard, par 71-track is one of the finest public courses in the United States and last year was the backdrop for Jonas Blixt’s first PGA Tour victory. In addition to Blixt, also headlining the field are three members of the Presidents Cup International squad: Angel Cabrera, Hideki Matsuyama and Marc Leishman. 39 of the 50 graduates of the Web.com Tour Finals are in the field this week too. Included in the group are Trevor Immelman, Andy Svoboda, Seung-Yul Noh and Chesson Hadley.

TELEVISION: Thursday-Sunday, 5-8 p.m. (Golf Channel).

With the following going to the victor: an invitation to the 2014 Masters and,  500 FedEx Cup points available and a $900,000, the Frys.com Open winner will be well rewarded.

Here’s a look at who that winner might be.

Gary Woodland: 20-1 odds

The Kansas Jayhawk tied for ninth at CordeValle last year and surged late in the 2013 PGA Tour season. Obviously, Woodland has the firepower to dominate the field this week, and with the bit of rest he’s been enjoying look for him to come out swinging. The oddsmakers are impressed by Woodland’s distance and ability to hit greens (66.98 percent in 2013), and he’s rightfully the favorite to win this week.

Hideki Matsuyama: 20-1 odds

Coming off a disappointing Presidents Cup performance, the top-ranked player in this week’s field will be poised to make amends. Matsuyama has eight straight top-10 finishes worldwide, and will be looking to put last week’s team competition behind him. Now a PGA Tour member, look for Matsuyama to take another step forward this year, beginning with a strong opening statement at CordeValle.

Billy Horschel: 25-1 odds

Billy Ho finished the 2013 season strong, tying for 18th at the BMW Championship and seventh at the Tour Championship. He finished inside the top 10 at the Frys.com Open in 2011 and inside the top 30 last year, so the Florida alum is abundantly capable at this RTJ Jr. track. Horschel is hitting nearly 68 percent of greens and ranks 28th in strokes gained-putting.

Jonas Blixt: 25-1 odds

Breakout winner at CordeValle last year, Jonas Blixt didn’t do much in 2013 to follow up his win. However, a spot of late season form (the orange pants fiasco exempted), a bit of rest, and a return to a venue where the Swede is undoubtedly feeling some good vibes have him poised for a strong showing this week.

John Peterson: 35-1 odds

John_Peterson_Golf_

One of the hottest players at the end of the Web.com tour season, John Peterson didn’t finish worse than fifth in any of his final five starts on the Tour’s gateway circuit. Long and accurate off the tee, if Peterson can figure out CordeValle’s greens, he’ll be in a great position. Peterson led the Web.com Tour in greens last year, and hits all the right notes, save for having played well at the course in the past: he missed the cut at least year’s Frys.com Open.

Peterson would have to figure out Silverado’s greens this year, correct? CordeValle was last year’s venue, but they moved it I believe.

He won the Greenbrier Classic in 2013.
