Stenson surges toward a new high point at the Tour Championship

Hopefully any offending clubs and unsuspecting lockers are safe now, as Henrik Stenson continues his march towards victory at the Tour Championship and in the FedExCup Playoffs.

A win this week will be a fitting exclamation point on the golfer’s fine 2013 season and his continued upward trend. As of the Accenture Match Play Championship in late February, Stenson was ranked 55th in the Official World Golf Ranking. Heading into the season-ending Tour Championship, the Swede was sixth in the much-maligned metric of the quality of a professional golfer’s play in the most recent couple of golf seasons, marking a significant leap forward.

On a larger scale, Stenson’s recent rise has been significant. The man who famously lost money through a series of bad investments with the Stanford group and stripped down to his skivvies to play a ball at the 2009 WGC Championships-CA Championship has had some serious low points in his professional career.

Most notably, Stenson, who earned his European Tour card in 2000, rose to inside the top 100 of the OWGR by 2001. However, by 2002 he found himself outside the top 600. Following a period of soul searching and rededication, Stenson eventually rose to No. 12 in the OWGR in 2006, and following his victory at the Players Championship in 2009, he rose to the fourth spot in the ranking.

Of course, it wasn’t all wine and roses for the Gothenburg native after that though: he fell again to outside the top 200 in early 2012. Three consecutive made cuts at the end of last year garnered Stenson a bit of positive momentum entering the 2013 season. This year, in addition to finishing inside the top five in two majors (U.S. Open, PGA Championship), Stenson has made 15 of 17 cuts on the PGA Tour and notched seven top-10 finishes and won the Deutsche Bank Championship.

So, for Henrik Stenson,  a win today—at the Tour Championship, in the FedExCup Playoffs, or both—marks a high point in a career of ups and downs.

I wonder if callaway could be talked into limited release of these legacy black irons in US. Love the looks of the 2013 version of these irons. Come on callaway! Capitalize on an opportunity.
