Z. Johnson wins the BMW Championship

Published

on

After finishing in the top-10 five times in his last six events, Zach Johnson finally broke through with a final-round 65 at the BMW Championship that earned him his tenth-career PGA Tour win and a coveted top-5 position in the FedEx Cup standings heading into this week’s Tour Championship.

Johnson began the day four shots behind 54-hole leader Jim Furyk, who jumped to the top of the leaderboard at Conway Farms on Friday with a round of 59. But unlike Furyk, Johnson was mistake-free on Monday. His bogey-free round included birdies on two of his last three holes. That leapfrogged Nick Watney, who was the early clubhouse leader at 14-under, and separated him from Furyk, who continued his final round struggles on Tour. Furyk shot a final-round 71 that marked the sixth-straight time the 43-year-old failed to convert a 54-hole lead into a victory.

With the win, Johnson earned 2500 FedEx Cup points, moving him from the 27th position all the way to 4th place. That means that Johnson, along with Tiger Woods (No. 1 on the FedEx Cup points list), Henrik Stenson (No. 2), Adam Scott (No. 3) and Matt Kuchar (No. 5) each control their own destiny at the Tour Championship at East Lake this week. If any of the five golfers win the event, they also win the Tour’s season-long FedEx Cup and the title’s hefty $10 million bonus.

Watney’s final-round score of 64 moved him from outside the top-30 in the FedEx Cup points list, the cutoff for entry into the Tour Championship, all the way to 12th place. He and Luke Donald, who finished 11-under and tied for fourth place at Conway Farms, were the only two golfers to move from outside the top-30 into the Tour Championship field. Donald started the week in 54th position, but his final-round 66 helped jump him 25 spots into the No. 29 position.

As a result, Harris English (No . 28 at the start of the week) and Lee Westwood (No. 30 at the start of the week) were bumped out of the top 30, ending their 2013 seasons on the PGA Tour. Dustin Johnson, who began the week No. 23 on the points list, clinched the final spot in the Tour Championship despite his T62nd finish.

Sets it up for a great finish at the Tour Championship next week. I don’t think there is any stand out favourite and anyone of the top 5 players in the points could win it!
