16-year-old Lydia Ko TKO’s the field in Canada
Lydia Ko became the youngest woman ever (15) to win an LPGA Tour event last year at the CN Canadian Women’s Open. This year, she became the youngest woman to defend an LPGA title, shooting a final-round 64 to win by a margin of five shots.
“I shot 10-under at the Australian Open this year, and that was round one,” Ko said. “That was great, but today I was in a little bit more of a pressure position, so I was really happy with my 64. I got off to a really good start, so that kind of helped my day.”
Ko began the final round at Edmonton’s Royal Mayfair Golf Club one shot back of Sweden’s Caroline Hedwall, but she got off to a quick start with birdies on five of her first eight holes. She played 1-under from that point to finish 15-under, five shots ahead of Karine Icher and six shots in front of Hedwall and Brittany Lincicome.
The win marks the fourth time the 16-year-old has won a women’s professional tournament — she also won the Ladies European Tour’s ISPS Handa New Zealand Open in February and the ALPG’s Bing Lee Samsung Women’s NSW Open in January 2012. As an amateur, however, she has not been able to accept any prize money, which totals $600,000 solely from her wins in Canada.
When asked if she was considering turning pro, Ko said:
“I’ve got some people above me like my mom and dad, they’re the boss. They’re going to help me to make the right decision and to turn pro at what time. I think as I’m only 16 still, it’s quite hard to make huge decisions. When I turn pro it’s like a job. Money is all about it and everything like that, every shot counts. Yeah, I think my parents and New Zealand golf they’re all going to have a say, and hopefully we’ll make a really good decision on when I will turn pro.”
LPGA rules mandate that a golfer must be 18 years of age to become an official members of the tour, but that ruled was waived for the former youngest winner on the LPGA Tour, Lexi Thompson. Thompson won the Navistar LPGA Classic in September 2011 at the age of 16. Less than two weeks later, her petition to join the tour was accepted, 17 months prior to her 18th birthday.

Can you believe it – the girl is only 16 years old, yet commentators on The Golf Channel are already commenting on how much money she is losing by not going pro. I’m sure when the time is right, she’ll make the right decision. She’s obviously got some parents who are bent on keeping her grounded. Good for them – good for her.

It’s great that she is as talented as she is but it doesn’t say much for the LPGA professionals when a “girl” out plays women. Not trying to knock the ladies it just seems logical that a more mature adult woman would be able to compete at a higher level then a 16 year old. I just find it interesting, maybe the LPGA needs to look at the course set ups and length of courses?

From your comments I imagine you’ve never watched Lydia play the game. Call her a girl if you will, and in truth she is, but she is no ‘girl’ when it comes to taking apart a golf course.
10 LPGA events played this year, 5 top 10’s, no missed cuts, low Am at 3 of the 4 Majors this year, #1 Am in the world since 2011, the list of accomplishments goes on.
It may well be logical that adult women should be able to beat up on a 16 year old but this is no normal 16 year old, this one is one of a kind..
