Having a car to get on Bethpage Black Options

It seems a lot of you have experience with lining up for bracelets at the Black. Do you have to have a car to get inline? I'm thinking of spending a week in the city around Labor Day and would love to get out there. I'm not looking to pay for a 2 day car rental to do this. I'm assuming the phone system will be all booked up. I will go ahead and register myself for the phone system, but I don't have faith I'd be able to get through. And I won't go through NY golf shuttle. Not because of the money, but because they should be in Gitmo for what they do. Oh yeah and they are high to think anything is worth that. Thanks in advance.
