Annika Sorenstam questioned her class; the Commish, Carolyn Bivens had a chat with her parents and manager; I wondered on these pages what was really up with her injury. Michelle Wie is being battered about concerning her withdrawal from the Ginn Tribute Hosted by Annika.
During an interview before the upcoming McDonald’s LPGA Presented by Coca Cola (man, that’s harder to type than it is to say) Ms. Sorenstam said when asked about Wie’s withdrawal "but you know, I just feel that there’s a little bit of lack of respect and class just to kind of leave a tournament like that and then come out and practice here, especially being the hostess. You know, I don’t know the situation, if it’s injury or whatever it is. It’s just — it just seemed really weird."
Just a little weird alright, being unable to complete your round and yet practice 2 days later stretches credulity. I’m not picking on Ms. Wie, I’m more irritated with her handlers who seem to have the vision skills of a mole trapped on the surface in direct sunlight. Just who is giving this kid advice? I understand ducking a rule, makes perfect sense to me because everyone knows this girl is not who that rule was intended to eliminate from competition. Why would you advise her to withdraw with injury then allow her to practice publically two days later? At least try to hide somewhere. Nobody untweaks a wrist in two days. Simply not possible.
Then we have the complaint from her Pro-Am partners to the LPGA concerning her attitude and behavior during that event. This led to the chat with the commish. Followed closely by an LPGA official tossing her parents off the range Tuesday siting the rule that only players coaches and caddies can be on the course.
This has all the ingredients of a highly entertaining reality soap opera. Stay tuned for more adventures in image tarnishing brought to you by B.J. Wie. I for one will be paying attention because I’ve always been fascinated by very very large train wrecks.
