Texas Open Champ Times Two

Zach Johnson made sure the second birdie putt on the 18th hole got all the way to the hole, unlike his first attempt on the 72nd hole of the tournament which came up just short forcing a playoff with James Driscoll. After a blistering round of 60 Saturday, during which he made up seven shots in eleven holes, Mr. Johnson shot even par 70 on Sunday and finished at 15 under par. Mr Driscoll made the playoff after starting the day eight shots back but shooting a lights out 62. He finished almost an hour ahead of the final group, spending a lot of time watching and waiting. He had a lot to watch as there were seven players within one shot of the lead with four holes to play.

One by one they all fell away, undone by the pressure of the moment.  The man most affected was Paul Goydos, whose birdie on the 16th hole left him alone at 16 under par.  On the par three 17th hole he hit his tee ball to the left rear of the green in the fringe.  The pin was on the far right side a long long way from his ball.  Instead of chipping from the bermuda grass fringe, which according to David Feherty had the grain directed towards his ball and anything but smoothed out, he choose to putt the ball.  The ball obviously hopped, more than once, and came up woefully short.  Hello three putt, goodbye lead.  On the 18th hole Mr. Goydos again hit his approach shot left of the flag, this time off the green in the rough but sitting up nicely.  His chip came out like a marshmallow, hit the fringe and stopped.  Hello two putt bogey and goodbye playoff.  “For 70 holes I did really good,” Goydos said. “Didn’t hit a good putt on 17 and didn’t hit a good shot on 18. And guys who play like that will do it."

As for Mr. Johnson, playing in the same group with Mr. Goydos and Justin Leonard, his birdie putt to win the tournament outright was dead in the center of the hole, just a tad short.  Hence the playoff.  For his win he earned just over $1 million and enough FedEx Cup points to make him the leader of that season long race.  Unfortunately next year this tournament will be moving to a new TPC course so his second title defense won’t take place on a golf course he obviously likes.  “It’s bittersweet, but can’t live in the past,” said Johnson, who earned $1,098,000. “I’m looking forward to the future.”  Not exactly profound, but then with that trip to the bank, and becoming the first tour player with two rounds of 60 or better how profound do you need to be?

As for Mr. Driscoll, he came into this tournament as a conditional status player who finished 141st on the money list last year, this was his best finish since the 2005 Zurich Classic.  He jumped from 212th on the seasons money list to 57th which isn’t bad for a weeks work.  He’s only $150,000 from matching the winnings of the player who finished 125th on the money list last year so his playing status is on the way to improving dramatically.  A check for $658,800 will do that for you.  Talk about a stimulus check, eh!  That should stimulate Mr. Driscoll for the rest of the year.

Best current stock shaft 2026 – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, one user is asking for thoughts on the best stock shafts offered in 2026. Stock shafts are the shafts included with a club when it’s purchased from retailers or OEMs.

@DTorres asked:

The last couple years has seen a lot of updates and additions to no upcharge stock shafts, which do you think is the best offering in 2026?

Im a bit of a shaft nerd and recently during my Members Testing with the Callaway Quantum Triple Diamond I found the updated Project X Denali Frost Black to be a fantastic stock shaft. I absolutely did not mesh well with the original Denali. Just curious what other people think are the current best Stock shaft offerings out with new models and stock Ventus options and LinQ options popping up here and there.

We were given the option for any stock shafts for our members review. I went with the 70g Black Frost 6.5 because it’s a shaft I don’t have, it’s an updated version of the original Denali and hear little about. I typically use a Diamana WB, GD VF or a HOF Raptor. I’m not saying it was neck and neck with any of those but it was a pleasant surprise I’m not accustomed to in stock shaft offerings.

Our members in the forum have been offering up their own thoughts on the best stock shafts available in 2026. Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • rsballer10: “IMO – MCA Ka’ili White Darkwave, Tensei 1k Black/white, UST Lin-Q White. People are free to spend their money however they see fit, but for me personally the shaft catalogs these days have enough options that I don’t see the value of a $400 upcharge. I have never had a problem finding a no upcharge shaft that fits the bend profile and weight that I need. Whether the paint job is good enough or not is above my pay scale.”
  • bcflyguy1: “Project X Titan Black. I’ve had one in 60TX in my Quantum TD Max for several weeks now. Have to give Titlieist their flowers for finding a way to make it available as a featured option; very shrewd bit of business and one that I suspect will be duplicated by the other companies. TT/PX have a certified banger on their hands with Titan.”
  • CTG77: “Undoubtedly, it’s the Tensei 1K RIP shafts from Titleist. The Tensei line gives about 98% of the performance of a Ventus VeloCore+ shaft at a tiny fraction of the cost if you’re looking for a blue or red profile. The white is not an exact match for Ventus Black, but it’s closer to it than the non-VeloCore+ Ventus shafts that come from Callaway or formerly came from TaylorMade.”

With the PGA Tour across the border in Canada this week, GolfWRX Tour Photographer Greg Moore stayed stateside and headed to the OccuNet Classic presented by Amarillo National Bank in Amarillo, Texas.

It’s always interesting to see what the guys are playing on the KFT, and this week certainly hasn’t disappointed so far, with some incredible wedge stamping on display.
