Spotted: Custom Odyssey Versa 7 putter

The Odyssey #7 putter has been one of the most popular head shapes in golf. The “fang” style has influenced more than a few putters since it became popular. Odyssey makes a few variants of the #7 and we spotted what looks like a prototype version at the 2023 Zurich Classic. It looks like the head started out its life as a #7 “S” model with a small slant neck that is typically attached near the heel of the putter.

The slant neck was removed, or never installed, and a center shaft post was welded in its place. The topline is also modified with white triple site dots instead of the usual single line. The sole looks unchanged with twin 15-gram interchangeable weights installed in the ports near the face. Speaking of the face, this Versa goes with a White Hot insert that could have a slightly more rough texture to it.

I don’t know if it is just the lighting from the photo, but the texture looks more aggressive than a retail White Hot insert. If the insert is different it could be for fine tuning the feel and sound or to influence the amount of skid or spin as the ball leaves the face.
