Brooks Koepka claims he made his decision to join LIV…after the US Open

During his pre-tournament press conference prior to LIV Golf series’ second event at Pumpkin Ridge, Brooks Koepka faced some tough questioning from the media.

Koepka was extremely evasive throughout the media session. At one point, Kopeka said “Just my opinion, man,” when he was asked why his allegiance flipped from the PGA Tour to LIV Golf.

Back in February, Koepka seemed quite certain about his interest in remaining with the PGA Tour.

“It’s been pretty clear for a long time now that I’m with the PGA Tour, it’s where I’m staying,” Koepka said during the Waste Management Phoenix Open. “I’m very happy. I think they do things the right way, people I want to do business with.”

Later that month when asked for his thoughts on LIV, he said: “Everyone talks about money. They’ve got enough of it. I don’t see it backing down. They can just double up and they’ll figure it out. They’ll get their guys. Somebody will sell out and go to it.”

Then, two weeks ago at the U.S. Open, Brooks was asked about the speculation that he was indeed going to join LIV Golf and leave the PGA Tour.

Koepka was miffed by the questions, and accused reporters of putting a “black cloud” over the championship.

On Tuesday, the four-time major champion claimed that he hadn’t even begun having conversations with LIV Golf until after the U.S. Open.

“You guys will never believe me, but we didn’t have the conversation [with LIV] ‘til everything was done at the U.S. Open and figured it out and just said I was going to go one way or another. Here I am.”

In terms of his reasoning for making the jump, Koepka cited being able to spend more time at home.

“You’re not doing a month on the road anymore,” Koepka said. “You know, life does go on even though when we’re not playing golf. So being away from home for a month. I don’t have any kids that I know about. So being at home is not really a thing for me, but life does go on. And like there’s some things we miss at home, being friends, family, a lot of birthdays. It would just be nice to be home a little bit more.”

The 32-year-old also said he wasn’t worried about his ability to participate in future major championships.

“You play anywhere around the world, you’ll be just fine, you’ll get into them,” Koepka said. “I made a decision. I’m happy with it, and whatever comes of it, I’ll live with it.”

54-hole golf tour deemed eligible for OWGR points…but it’s not LIV

After a seventeen-month application process, a 54-hole golf tour was deemed eligible for OWGR points.

Unfortunately, for LIV Golf and their fans, it was the Clutch Pro Tour.

After the decision, which is effective immediately, OWGR chairman Peter Dawson issued a statement.

“This is a significant milestone for golf, and OWGR is deeply encouraged by the achievement and the continued efforts in developing the sport of golf in the United Kingdom.”

“We look forward to watching the progress of the Clutch Pro Tour as it continues to play a key role in the development of players from the region,” Dawson added.

The Clutch Pro Tour operates in the United Kingdom and features a 36-hole cut. It also has an open qualifying school.

Charlie Woods attempting to qualify for spot at 2024 U.S. Open

As first reported by Bob Harig of Sports Illustrated, Charlie Woods will be attempting to qualify for this year’s U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2.

The first stage of qualifying for this year’s tournament will be an 18-hole local event on Thursday, April 25th, in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

There will be 84 players in the field, five of which will reach the 36-hole qualifier that will take place in June.

Earlier this season, Charlie attempted to qualify for the Cognizant Classic, and struggled, shooting an 86.

If the younger Woods is able to qualify, he will tee it up in the same field as his father in a few months at one of the more historic U.S. Open venues.

“I loved the way the Ludvig was out there, having a great time, not taking himself or the situation too seriously. Even after the double at 11, he was like “well, that’s golf!” Loose and relaxed: that’s the way to play. It’s obvious he loves what he’s doing, he loves the big moments, and he loves being a part of it all.

Arnold Palmer was viewed that way. Just like Brooks Robinson was forever viewed as not just a great baseball player, but a great human being and friend to Baltimore.”
