Farmers Insurance Open Tour Truck Report: Details on Adam Scott’s AutoFlex experiment, Jon Rahm’s new putter (and shoes)
Titleist
Adam Scott was spotted testing an AutoFlex SF505XX shaft in his Titleist TSi4 (9 degrees). In early testing, Scott was looking at numbers to the tune of 182 mph, 11 degrees launch, and 2,200 rpm. Scott has been near the top in driving leaders all year, and this switch may be a new way in to optimizing that even more. The AutoFlex shafts are unique in their profile—in simple terms, they are light/stiff, AND whippy. Yes, that’s correct. Word is the shaft will most likely go into play this week.

Charles Howell III tested (and will put in play most likely next week) a set of Mitsubishi Chemical MMT 125 TX shafts. Howell was looking for a bit tighter dispersion with his irons, especially on mis-hits, and found that the MMT gave him that plus a bit more launch with his long irons. Howell would be the third player to make the switch to the MMT 125 TX following Rickie Fowler and Davis Love III. CH3 will have the MMT in his Titleist T100 4-iron this week.

Jimmy Walker went in the opposite direction of Adam Scott going into a Ventus Black 10 X is his TSi3 (8 degrees). It’s a beast of a stick at 43.5 inches, which to Walker felt more comfortable with his new swing.

Max Homa added a Titleist TSi2 7-wood to the arsenal with a Graphite Design Tour AD XC 9 TX shaft.
Wedges with Aaron Dill
Adam Scott switching from 60-14K to 60-12D the change was inspired by Adam needing more forward bounce to control trajectory. True Temper Dynamic Gold AMT Tour Issue X100 shaft.

Sung Jae Im is changing from 52-08F, 56-08M, 60-04L setup to a 52-08F, 58-04L because of length of golf course. Im wanted to add an extra club to the top part of the bag. Both are set up with Dynamic Gold Tour Issue X100 shafts.
TaylorMade
Matthew Wolff was testing new putters with Keith Sbarboro on Tuesday afternoon. Not 100 percent if the Spider Chalk will get replaced, but he was testing a TP Model with a long neck that was pretty cool looking.

Callaway
Patrick Rodgers put the new New Epic Speed Max LS driver at 46 inches with a Fujikura Speeder TR 757 TX shaft in the bag. The new setup gave Rodgers 4 mph increase in ball speed.
Jon Rahm put Callaway’s new Odyssey 2-Ball “10” with a red Stroke Lab shaft in play this week. It’s quite a monumental occurrence as the putter was the final holdout from his TaylorMade days. And peep the Air Jordan 11’s!!

Ping
Louis Oosthuizen put a BGT Stability Tour shaft in his Vault 2.0 Voss Platinum putter.
Old news, but Bubba showed up with these again. Seems to be something he’s committed to.

Another long hitter (although non-staff), JB Holmes put the Ping G425LST in play (9 degrees, Small -) with a Fujikura Ventus Black 6X.
Free Agents
Newly minted free agent Lucas Glover showed up to the Farmers with a bag full of PXG Gear. The bag included a mixed set of PXG Gen3 T (4, 5, 6) and ST irons (7-p) with Nippon Pro Modus3 120 X shafts. Glover has a Srixon Z785 driver in the bag with a Fujikura Ventus Blue 7 X shaft. In the woods department: Titleist TSi2 3-wood with a Fujikura Atmos Blue 8 X shaft and a PXG 7-wood with a Fujikura Ventus Blue 8 X shaft. In addition to a PXG putter, Glover has Vokey wedges: SM7 52-12F, 56-14F, SM5 60-08M.

Interesting clubs at top of bag – GolfWRXers discuss
In our forums, users are talking about top of bag setups that are non-traditional or thought-provoking in some way. Original poster @SuperSpurs106 inquired about other members who might use unorthodox set-ups to help with gapping issues or weak spots.
They wrote:
“I currently have a PING G430 driver, TM Qi35 3W and a TM Qi4D 7W. Driver and 7W are fine but can’t get on with my 3W and have always struggling with this club over the years. Thinking of adding a 2H which I know would look odd. Just wondering if anyone else had a weird set up at the top of their bag?”
Our members in the forum have offered up their thoughts and personal experiences with non-traditional top of bag set-ups, and their reasoning for thinking outside of the box to begin with. Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- BowMain42: “Don’t worry about what “looks” odd. If the club does what you need it to do, it’s the right club.”
- scooterhd2: “I cant hit 3 woods either. Thats why I roll with a unicorn XL Hibore 2 wood. 400 cc head at 16 degrees of loft and its just a monster 3 wood off the tee. Off the deck, we are playing the f6 baffler. 5 wood at 41.75 inches and its easy to control.”
- phizzy30: “I had driver, 3 metal, 2/4 hybrid once upon a time as a higher ss player. 4 hybrid is gone and in place is a driving iron nowadays. I don’t think what you’re proposing is weird in anyway, however the yardage gap might be glaringly huge between driver and 2 hybrid. What is it about your 3 metal that has got you all messed up? You could always go 4 metal with shorter shaft and see if that works.”

Members of the Mini Driver Club – GolfWRXers discuss
In our forums, one user has gone searching for fellow users of a mini driver. In a post, @TightFade asked for other mini driver users to chime in with their weapon of choice, the reason for employing a mini, and what club follows it in the bag.
@TightFade asked:
“What mini are you playing? What spot in the bag did it take over? What’s the next club after it? For me: Elyte mini 13.5. Replacing 3w. Next up club looks like it’ll be 5w.”
Our members in the forum have been sharing their own bag setups featuring the mini driver, and the various reasons they purchased one in the first place. Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- RCGA: “Ping G430 Max 12* ‘Thriver.’ Next club is a 4w and 2i (I play a weird course).”
- JMB3: “R7 at 12.75 with Diamana BB 63s. 3w replacement. Next Club: Elyte Ti 5w at 17*.”
- ColdOkieGolf: “R7 15.5 turned down to 13.5 It replaces the 3w. I found it surprisingly easy to hit off the deck, and it’s very rare that I need or want to hit something beyond 250 from the fairway, so next club is my 7w.”
- ChaosTheory: “I’m sub-90 MPH with driver. But I’m able to hit DOD. I have been wanting something like the R7 15.5, so I just ordered one. I have a spot in the bag so nothing has to go. But I could see it replacing my trusty 4 wood, which I never use for approach shots. Just tee shots and lay ups. If I drop the 4 wood, I will turn my 7 wood down to ~20 degrees and will have good gaps. I recently tried a thriver build: 12 degree driver turned to 14, with a heavier 44 inch shaft and added head weight. I hit it great. Very accurate and not overly high, but the problem was that it sometimes went as far as a typical drive. And that’s not what I needed. So I will probably turn the 15.5 up to 16.5 or even 17.5. It’s all theoretical at this point. ?”

Good move for Rahm to already shun those Travis Matthew shoes for Air Jordan. I bought a pair of the TM golf shoes and I’ve never worn anything so uncomfortable in my life.

Calling the autoflex whippy is really misleading considering its non-Newtonian properties make it progressively stiffer as force is applied, yes in hand it feels whippy but but doesn’t play like a soft shaft.

I thought Adam Scott used a low bounce K – how much effective bounce on his new D grind?

I know, seems Walker is becoming obsolete again and to keep him in the mews he is trying x100 and now 10x driver shafts.
Dude just play good golf and less strain on your back Jimmy. I used to love this guy but come o.
