Holmes to replace injured Furyk at Presidents Cup

Published

on

The lingering wrist pain from a bone contusion that caused Jim Furyk to miss the final two events of the PGA Tour’s FedExCup will also cause him to miss the Presidents Cup.

Furyk, who has an all-time 20-10-3 Presidents Cup record, will join the U.S. team in South Korea this week as the team’s fourth Assistant Captain. He will be replaced by J.B. Holmes, who was selected by team captain Jay Haas to fill Furyk’s spot.

[quote_box_center]“There is nothing I take more pride in than representing the United States in The Presidents Cup and the Ryder Cup, and I am deeply disappointed that I will have to withdraw from playing because my wrist, although improving, is still not where it needs to be at this point,” Furyk said. “There are few people I respect more than Jay Haas, who I partnered with in The Presidents Cup in 2003 in South Africa, and I’m very grateful to accept the invitation to be part of the team as assistant captain.”[/quote_box_center]

The event would have marked Furyk’s eighth appearance in a Presidents Cup, while it’s Holmes’ first — although he did represent the U.S. in the 2008 Ryder Cup.

[quote_box_center]“My heart goes out to Jim because I know how much The Presidents Cup means to him,” Holmes said. “Obviously, he has been a leader for our team for many years and he will be greatly missed. I am, however, very honored and excited to get the call from Captain Haas to make the trip to South Korea to help the U.S. Team retain the Cup.”[/quote_box_center]

Holmes finished 12th in the Presidents Cup points list, although Captain Haas chose Phil Mickelson and his son Bill Haas, who was ranked 11th, as his Captain’s Picks.
