Bradley falters as Bae takes Byron Nelson title
It’s not about how one starts but how one finishes. If Keegan Bradley and Sang-Moon Bae didn’t understand this old adage before the Byron Nelson Championship this week, there’s a good chance they do now.
Bae shot a 69 on his final round and finished 13-under par to win the Byron Nelson Championship for his first PGA Tour victory Sunday at TPC Four Seasons in Irving, Texas.
Bradley, the 2011 tournament champion, set a course record of 60 (10-under) on Thursday, the first day of the tournament. After a 69 on the par-70 course on Friday, Bradley held on to his lead by three strokes heading into the weekend. By the end of his third round, however, Bradley saw his lead shrink to just one stroke with Bae nipping at his heels.
In a year that has been dominated by golfers from the United States, the South Korean proved that consistency pays off as he carded a 66 in his first three rounds of the tournament.
“The course was really tough,” Bae said after his victory. “The winds were very strong. I did very well this week.”
With wind gusts of up to 35 mph Sunday, Bae continued his hot streak and started his final round by carding four birdies (4-under) through his first eight holes to get out to a four stroke lead.
Things would get interesting from there, however. Bae struggled off the tee in the middle of his round and missed five fairways in a row at one point including Nos. 9 and 10. He gave three strokes back to Bradley after a double bogey on No. 9 and a bogey on No. 10, leaving him with just a one-stroke lead early into the back nine.
Bae would start No. 15 with a two-stroke lead but lipped out a putt for par to tie with Bradley after Bradley birdied the hole.
Things would start to unravel for Bradley at that point. Bradley would return the favor on the very next hole by lipping out a four-foot birdie putt at No. 16 giving Bae a one-stroke lead.
“There’s some good I can bring out of this but I’m happy for Moon,” Bradley said. “He played really good today.”
Bae wouldn’t look back from there as he got another stroke on No. 17 with a par after a daring shot off the tee that made it just over the water and onto the edge of the green. Bae made it to the 18th tee with a two-stroke lead and closed it out with a par.
The victory comes in Bae’s second full season on Tour, and he becomes just the fifth player of Korean descent to win on the Tour. Another Asian player, 14-year-old Guan Tianlang from China, missed his first cut in three tournaments earlier in the week.

This was a great victory by Sang-Moon Bae who continues to impress on tour. His putting was super impressive and played a major role in sealing the victory.
He’s won 11 times on the Asian Tour but I imagine his first victory on the PGA Tour is even more special.
