Fujikura MCI Hybrid Prototype Shafts

Published

Steel or graphite?

In recent years, the answer for the best players in the world has been simple — graphite in their woods and hybrids and steel in their irons in wedges. But Fujikura’s recently launched MCI, or “metal composite iron” shaft puts a wrench in things.

The MCI shafts are made of metal and graphite, creating a metal-bodied shaft with a graphite weave that allows the shafts to be made lighter than traditional steel shafts and better absorb vibration. Fujikura’s MCI shafts were launched in January for irons, but this week we’ve spotted a prototype hybrid shaft model on the range at the Zurich Classic.

The hybrid shafts, which feature the same technology as the MCI iron shafts, are painted black and weigh about 95 grams. They have a profile that Pat McCoy, director of technical services for Fujikura, says is similar to the company’s Speeder 904 hybrid shaft.

“They’re fairly low in torque,” McCoy said. “Right around 1.9, 2 degrees. “They’re designed to launch the ball with the loft of a hybrid, but they don’t have a whole lot of kick.”

Like the MCI iron shafts, the prototype hybrid shafts are designed with a balance point that mimics steel shafts, which will keep a golfer’s swing weight consistent from club to club.

It’s an interesting concept. Golfer if anything are traditional and keeping it simple usually prevails.

I believe the concept has been there for many years. Ex. Honma golf had graphite shaf wrapped with titanium back in 80s. The idea was to reduce the total weight, but keep the feel of iron. Of course the quality is much better than 80s, but many of concepts which club makers are advertising as new idea are not really new….
