Humana Challenge Round 1: Villegas, Toms on top

Published

on

Camilo Villegas and David Toms shot rounds of 9-under 63 to lead the first round of the Humana Challenge in La Quinta, Calif.

It’s fitting that Villegas, one of the the Tour’s fittest players, leads the tournament, which is partnered with the Clinton Foundation to help promote health and wellness.

PGA Tour players are playing three different courses in this week’s four-round event: PGA West’s Arnold Palmer Private Course, PGA West’s Jack Nicklaus Private Course and La Quinta Country Club. The first three rounds are being played on all three courses, while Sunday’s final round of the low 70 players and ties will conclude on the Palmer Course.

Villegas needed only 24 putts with a new TaylorMade Manta belly putter to navigate the greens on the Nicklaus Course. David Toms missed only one green at La Quinta Country Club, and like Villegas, played Round 1 without a bogey.

Four players tied at 8-under, Ted Potter Jr., Sang-Moon Bae, Brandt Snedeker and Bob Estates had strong performances on the tournament’s easiest venue, the Nicklaus Course, which had a Round 1 stroke average of 68.875. The Nicklaus Course played more than one shot easier than La Quinta Country Club, with a stroke average of 69.938. The Palmer Course had a Round 1 stroke average of 69.542.
