Best modern fairway woods for the senior golfer? One club is hugely popular with our members
In our forums, our members have been discussing modern fairway woods for senior golfers. WRXer ‘DaveLeeNC’ is a 76-year-old with a 10-handicap and kicks off the thread saying:
“My index is 10’ish and my 76 year old body (mostly healthy other than a bunch of arthritis) is suffering from the typical distance loss that comes at my age. Right now my driver SS runs in the low 80’s. So even after moving up a set of tees I still hit a lot of fairway woods (or long hybrids) into greens.
I currently play Ping G15 4w/7w clubs at 17* and 21*. I can’t hit a 15* fairway wood any further than the 4w. The G15 is pretty long in the tooth at this point. What is the opinion out there regarding whether or not I might get some extra distance from a more modern fairway wood?”
And our members have been sharing their suggestions in our forum, with Ping’s G440 range being a hugely popular choice.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- gator022: “Give the Ping G440’s a whirl.”
- JAM01: “62 yo, Ping G440 4/7/9, then a 7 iron. The woods are adjustable so I can get the gapping a little better.”
- DE-ILLINI: “I have a Ping G430 5W. Easy to hit and it is the best fairway wood I have played since the original Adam’s Tight Lies clubs. It is so good, I intend to get a Ping G440 7W next season. I would not hesitate to check out the Ping G440 line up.”
- happycamper515: “I really like the Cobra Darkspeed X 5W. Easily the best club in my bag all year.”

Spotted: Titleist GTS USWO headcovers
GolfWRX Tour Photographer Greg Moore was at Riviera Country Club this last week in Los Angeles for the U.S. Women’s Open. While browsing the photos, I spotted a recent major trend in headcovers. That is, the Titleist GTS headcover line expands the majors theme.
Seen on the bag of Natalia Guseva were the red, white, and blue Titleist GTS covers. This is the third time we have seen limited-edition Titleist major covers, the others being at the Masters and the PGA Championship. But with the launch of the GTS line back at the Texas Children’s Houston Open in March, this is the first time we have seen Titleist come out with major themed head covers for the season (driver headcovers through hybrids).
Check out some photos below.

At the Masters, we saw the familiar Masters green, white, and yellow. While the PGA Championship design was colors synonymous with the Philadelphia Eagles NFL team. This shows the season major drops continue full steam ahead for major OEMs. New opportunities for each major for designs and themes, and who knows, maybe a lucky spark for a player and a major championship for their resume. It gets the wheels turning for what major theme headcover you would keep on your bag for the whole season!

Bought a new set of Ping 440’s a few months ago including 7 wood, 9, 5 and 3. Totally love the clubs which are very forgiving and have definitely increased my distance. I’m 79 and often score my age, of course hitting from the senior T box. Highly recommend the Ping 440’s!!!!

The later Pings are a huge improvement on the G15. I have a 12 degree 410 which I like a lot provided it is not too windy. My 425 Max isn’t hugely better and at 10 and a half degrees is a bit strong and plays up my slice at tines. . Ping 425 4 and 7 woods are great then I do 6 8 PW SW irons putter and sometimes a chipper
