In the early 2000s, we saw some of the most legendary shafts that pushed the envelope of technology and materials. During that time, graphite shafts were changing the landscape of golf equipment, and we were all following along, closely. One of those shafts was the iconic Mitsubishi Diamana White Board that was played by so many of the best players in the world, including Tiger Woods.
The Diamana White Board was the low-launching and low-spinning sibling to the equally as famous, mid-launching, Diamana Blue Board. There was also a higher launching and spinning Red Board that saw a lot of play. Mitsubishi’s color-coded system that correspond with launch profiles is still used today, even by other shaft manufacturers. The original shafts shared the same lustrous silver paint, but the White Board featured the white “surfboard” Diamana logo as well as the flower band graphic up near the handle section.
Original Diamana White Board
This new Diamana White Board technically carries the name “Diamana WB” as Mitsubishi has transitioned all of the Diamana shafts to two-letter names, like the TB and PD that are currently available. While we don’t get a flower band on this version, Mitsubishi made sure to incorporate flowers into the graphics near the handle section. Those flowers also look to be a little bit of a throwback to older Diamana shafts; I spied an X pattern from shafts like the Kai’li and Ahina in there.
We haven’t gotten all of the details on the new shaft but we do know the profile should be very similar to the original White Board. This means you can expect low launch and spin with amazing stability for stronger players or players who need that profile in their woods. Mitsubishi has updated the materials and construction of the new WB, including their Xlink Tech Resin System that reduces the amount of resin. Xlink ensures more carbon content in the shaft to increase feel, strength, and elasticity for higher performance. The actual carbon fiber in the shaft is also updated and we can probably expect to see more exotic fibers like Mitsubishi’s MR70 and maybe even their boron fiber. Kevin was able to compare this new Diaman WB to the shaft from 20 years ago when we asked him to compare the two.
“You know, we tested this [new Whiteboard] with a player in Atlanta; he has an iteration of the first whiteboard in their bag with some different graphics on it. Very, very close feel-wise. Obviously, there are some updates in carbon fiber technology that we put into the new lines. The new X-Link system in there is a resin system like I mentioned earlier that we’re able to get resin in tighter spots, we don’t have to put as much in there.
“So you get a lot more feel, a lot more energy transfer and the tip technology of this new one is I would say much better but a lot more stable at impact than the older parts.”
We don’t have an official launch date yet, but Mitsubishi hinted that 2024, around spring or summer, would be a retail release for the Diamana WB, and you will probably see a few more being tested and played in the early tournaments next year.
