TaylorMade updates P790 irons for 2023

Published

on

How do you improve a high-performing, highly popular iron? For 2023, and the fourth generation of P790 irons, TaylorMade engineers focused on the interior cavity of each iron.

Before digging into exactly what this means, a few visuals: Check out the interior of the TaylorMade P790 3-iron, 7-iron, and pitching wedge, below.

As you can see, there’s A LOT going on. Engineers utilized the variables of tungsten weighting, SpeedFoam Air, and internal mass — with an assist from AI — to precisely give golfers what they need in each iron. For example, launch and forgiveness in the long irons.

FLTD CG

More specifically, TaylorMade is using what the company calls FLTD CG (flighted CG) to strategically position CG throughout the set (lower in the long irons, higher in the short irons). CG is positioned almost a millimeter lower in the long irons compared to previous generations. In the shorter irons, the higher CG positions allowed engineers to dial in spin and promote accuracy.

Stabilization bar

Above the tungsten weight in the 3 through 7-irons is the new sound stabilization bar. The positioning of the bars allows for feel and performance adjustments and the reduction of unwanted vibrations at impact. In the longer irons, TaylorMade moved the stabilization bar toward the center of the club, and the tungsten weighting is closer to the sole, while the opposite is true in the mid-irons.

Refined look

The latest iteration of P790 irons feature a slightly refined tour satin scratch bisects the pearl satin chrome and are designed for easy combo-ing with P770 irons.

“P·790 is a collision of art and engineering. The allure lies not only in the clean design and visual appeal, but also in the high-performance machine that lives within. It’s the total package, an ideal blend of external elegance and internal power.” – Matt Bovee, TaylorMade’s Director, Irons Product Creation

What’s the perfect mini-driver/shaft combo? – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing Mini-Drivers and accompanying shafts. WRXer ‘JamesFisher1990’ is about to purchase a BRNR Mini and is torn on what shaft weight to use, and our members have been sharing their thoughts and set ups in our forum.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • PARETO: “New BRNR at 13.5. Took it over to TXG (Club Champ but TXG will always rule) in Calgary for a fit. Took the head down to 12, stuck in a Graphite Design AD at 3 wood length and 60g. Presto- numbers that rivaled my G430Max but with waaaaay tighter dispersion. Win.”
  • driveandputtmachine: “Still playing a MIni 300.  The head was only 208, so I ordered a heavier weight and play it at 3 wood length.  I am playing a Ventus Red 70.   I play 70 grams in my fairways.  I use it mainly to hit draws off the tee.  When I combine me, a driver, and trying to hit a draw it does not work out well most of the time.  So the MIni is for that. As an aside, I have not hit the newest BRNR, but the previous model wasn’t great off the deck.  The 300 Mini is very good off the deck.”
  • JAM01: “Ok, just put the BRNR in the bag along side a QI10 max and a QI10 3 wood. A load of top end redundancy. But, I have several holes at my two home courses where the flight and accuracy of the mini driver helps immensely. Mine is stock Proforce 65 at 13.5, I could see a heavier shaft, but to normal flex, as a nice alternative.”
