Chris Kirk explains his unique Callaway prototype wedge (and how black irons help)

On Wednesday at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic, GolfWRX.com spotted a unique Callaway Jaws prototype wedge in Chris Kirk’s bag. If you take a closer look at the back weight ports, you’ll notice there’s been some tiny manipulations to the metal.

We caught up with the Callaway staffer on Wednesday to get the lowdown on what’s different about the wedge, and why he wants it that way.

“It’s a new prototype that they just made for me a few weeks ago,” Kirk explained. “A lot of times when they [build me a new wedge], they’ll make it a swing weight heavy just in case I need to adjust it at all. I spent a few weeks just kind of messing around with it, chipping, and getting a feel for the sole of it. I didn’t feel like I needed to change anything, so they just buzzed some weight off the back. It was really, really good as is.

“I want my wedges D4 and my irons D3. That’s how I’ve done it for a while now. I’m pretty particular about everything – I can tell you almost all of my specs right off the top of my head.

“I use S200’s in my wedges and Project X LZ 6.5’s in my irons, so there’s a little tiny weight difference, but not much. I still like the wedges to feel just a touch heavier at D4.”

GolfWRX also asked Kirk about his Callaway Apex MB irons, and why he prefers the black look instead of chrome.

“For some reason I have always hit darker irons better. If you had a chrome version of my irons, and then looked at mine, mine would look significantly smaller, even though they’re not. I don’t know why that is, but I want my irons to look as small as possible. So that’s the reasoning for it.

“I just feel like if you give me a cavity back iron, I’m going to hit it all over the face. And if you give me a teeny blade, I’m going to flush it. I’ve always been that way.”

Always? When did Mizuno ever have dark irons for you, Chris?
