Ping announces 2nd “Ping Slam” putter: PLD Limited Pal 2

Published

on

Ping continues to celebrate the “Ping Slam” with the second of four commemorative putters dropping next week for the PGA Championship. The “Ping Slam,” occurred when Ping won all four major championships in one year (1988), a feat that had never happened before and has not happened since for any putter brand. Each putter in the collection celebrates one of the four major championship wins.

The PLD Limited Pal 2 putter, with its distinctive Zing-style hosel and white sightline, is the second in the collection. It celebrates Jeff Sluman’s win at the 1988 PGA Championship with the club. Sluman won the 1988 PGA at Oak Tree Golf Club in Edmond, Oklahoma, where he finished with a score of 12 under par, winning by three strokes over Paul Azinger.

The putters are custom-built by Ping WRX master craftsmen at the company’s headquarters in Phoenix, Arizona. Each putter is serialized for authenticity and includes a custom headcover unique to each of the four major events.

The first of the four putters, commemorating Sandy Lyle’s 1988 Masters victory with a Pal putter was released in April.

“The buildup and attention the ‘Ping Slam’ PLD Limited Pal model received during last month’s Masters was fun to see,” said Ping Executive Chairman John A. Solheim. “We even gave one to Sandy Lyle at Augusta and he used it to sink his final putt of his last Masters. It was Sandy’s win with the original Ping Pal putter at the 1988 Masters that put us on the path to this amazing accomplishment. That brought back some very special memories for me, and we were very honored by his gesture on his last hole.

“The Ping Slam celebration is a great way to pay tribute to Karsten’s success and all he brought to putter designs while celebrating with our loyal Ping fans. When it happened 35 years ago, it was very special, and we celebrated by running one of our iconic yellow ads under the headline: Ping Putters Used To Win The Grand Slam Of Golf. What made it even more rewarding was that four different models of putters were used in the victories.”

Ping’s engineers and company historian scoured the archives to retain the integrity of the four classic designs during the milling process, spending time in the legendary Ping Gold Putter Vault to ensure the integrity of the designs.

The PLD Limited program celebrates Ping’s putter success and heritage. Last year, the PLD Limited Anser Patent 55 putter was introduced to acknowledge the 55th anniversary of the granting of the Anser patent. Each of the four versions made available throughout the year sold out in less than three minutes.

The fully milled 303 stainless steel PLD Limited Pal 2 putter will be available for purchase on pingpld.com Tuesday, May 16. Each putter is serialized for authenticity and includes a custom headcover unique to each of the four major events. Only 88 of the handcrafted putters are being offered at $990 apiece (limit one per customer).

I love my putter, but need a couple of those PLD putters. They are sweet.

Rickie Fowler’s new putter: Standard-length Odyssey Jailbird 380 in custom orange

Editor’s note: This is an excerpt from a piece our Andrew Tursky originally wrote for PGATour.com’s Equipment Report. Head over there for the full article.

…The Jailbird craze hasn’t really slowed down in 2024, either. According to Odyssey rep Joe Toulon, there are about 18-20 Jailbird putter users on the PGA TOUR.

Most recently, Akshay Bhatia won the 2024 Valero Texas Open using a broomstick-style Odyssey Jailbird 380 putter and Webb Simpson is switching into a replica of that putter at the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship.

Now, Fowler, who essentially started the whole Jailbird craze, is making a significant change to his putter setup.

Fowler, who has had a couple weeks off since the 2024 RBC Heritage, started experimenting with a new, custom-orange Jailbird 380 head that’s equipped with a standard 35-inch putter build, rather than his previous 38-inch counter-balanced setup.

According to Fowler, while he still likes the look and forgiveness of his Jailbird putter head, he’s looking to re-incorporate more feel into his hands during the putting stroke.

He told GolfWRX.com on Tuesday at the Wells Fargo Championship that the 38-inch counterbalanced setup “served its purpose” by helping him to neutralize his hands during the stroke, but now it’s time to try the standard-length putter with a standard-size SuperStroke Pistol Tour grip to help with his feel and speed control.

Although Fowler was also spotted testing standard-length mallets from L.A.B. Golf and Axis1 on Tuesday, he confirmed that the custom Odyssey Jailbird 380 is the putter he’ll use this week at the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship.
