‘It makes me want to puke’ – Chamblee rips LIV Golf stars in scathing attack

What a week for golf!

The much-discussed LIV Golf series started yesterday amidst huge analysis of the morals and legitimacy, and yet over 100,000 tuned in to the YouTube channel to see what all the fuss was about.

Whilst that has all been going on, the long-standing RBC Canadian Open has started, with defending champ Rory McIlroy giving a clear opinion on the rebel tour, while the DP World Tour kicked off the second Scandinavian Mixed event, a mixed men’s and women’s tournament, to some eyes a better way of ‘growing the game.’

Naturally, and some might say sadly, the LIV event has grabbed all the headlines.

Participating players have been grilled at the press conferences about their thoughts on their resignation from the PGA Tour and human rights issues surrounding the Saudi-backed series, some with pre-prepared and scripted answers, some not quite so erudite.

And then there were the organizing authorities.

The USGA has decided to allow LIV players that are qualified to still take part in next week’s US Open, whilst the PGA Tour have said ‘no thanks, goodbye’, with McIlroy today saying he welcomed that decision.

Golf Twitter has gone crackers during the week with very few staying away from contributing to the hundreds of topics that surround, let’s face it, quite a minor event.

Then there’s the pros.

Golf Channel analyst, Brandel Chamblee, made his feelings clear in a speech broadcast by Sky Sports News, saying the players that have joined the LIV series make him “want to puke”.

He continued, with genuine passion and vitriol.

“When it comes to the richest sports stars in the world, Phil Mickelson is 11th. He’s ahead of Kobe Bryant, he’s ahead of David Beckham, he’s ahead of Kevin Durant, he’s ahead of Lewis Hamilton.”

“You’re talking about him being ahead of icons in sports that are far more popular worldwide than the game of golf. And yet why is it that golf has four of the highest paid athletes of all time? Why is it that Phil Mickelson is 11th, in terms of the stratosphere he does occupy, as an athlete… that athletes who have made less money than him but play a sport that is widely more popular. Why is that? It’s because of the image of the golfer.

Because of their independent contract nature. Because they show up and, generally speaking, play a game that is self governed and self policing. It is a game of integrity. It’s because corporations want to align themselves with these players. It’s because of the philanthropic aspect of the game of golf.”

“So when I hear these players say that they are ‘growing the game’… it makes me want to puke. They’re destroying the game. And they are destroying their reputations.”

With absolutely no regret, the former professional concludes his feelings with a biting thought.

“This is one of the saddest days in the history of golf. Watching these players come together for money and show to the world…they are showing us that they are the greediest, most self serving, self interesting, wilfully blind players in the world of golf today.”

What a week to be alive.

The tour brass sounds just like the NBA execs when the ABA started up and we know how that turned out – a merger of the leagues was successful and created new opportunities for players, owners and fans. Jay and Keith need to be fired and then get new execs who want to work cooperatively. I can envision many different scenarios that would get lots of new, younger blood involved in the golf world. Greg has it right and he has the backing to persevere. I like the format, and mixed in with other formats would move the needle for golf.. and I’m in the over 60 demographic!!

So we’ve been buying Saudi oils for decades and we stil buy their oil. Big Joe’s going there to ask them to pump more oil so that we don’t have to pay for $6-$7/gallon gas with pretty much the same regime except for a new head honcho at the helm. We all pump saudi gas everyday and if it wern’t for Saudi gas then this country would be in deep do do. So we can give money to the Saudis but the LIV players can’t receive Saudi money? Ok that makes sense. The media portrays the Chinese as an existential threat to the US and enemy #1 and yet the trade between the two countries are so intertwined that we both need each other to sustain both economies. China ia also #1 holder of US debt. Let’s leave politics out of sports and let the politicians fuss over it. I personally hold no grudge towards the guys that went to LIV.

Griner played BBall in Russia and no one says a thing about that. There’s other athletes who play sports in countries and for countries doing awful things to their citizens and political opponents, but nothing is ever said.

Makes him want to puke because he’s just jealous and wishes he could join. Chamblee was just an average pro who would have been perfect for LIV. Speaking of being pro, isn’t making money playing golf why these guys turn pro? Money comes from all evil sources, that’s why the love of money is the root of all evil.

For sake of argument, let’s assume every single bad thing ever said about the Saudis is true. Question, it’s not ok to TAKE $100’s of millions of dollars from the Saudis to play golf, but it’s perfectly ok to GIVE BILLIONS to the Saudis for oil?

How is it that our outrage is so selective here?

The gas for my damn golf trip this year will cost more than my share of the trip its self!!

Every single person whining about this league just because it’s backed by the Saudis is a bloody hypocrite. Their lives are literally FULL of crap made by and funded by the Chinese Communists who make the Saudis look like Mother Teresa.

And yes, that even means the people that lost family on 9/11 that signed that letter. Was a connection between the Saudi family and the hijackers ever established? Maybe I missed that headline… /shrug

i mean – there’s no logical argument that the competition is bad for the game. if you think that, you just don’t understand how things work. especially it being in a format that is new, unique and frankly more interesting. PGA is threatened they may not be able to do whatever they want and do it their old-fashioned way.

Saudi Arabia is problematic – I understand people concerned over that, totally fair, although their comments would hold more weight if they acknowledged the US is going downhill fast on human rights issues too

The PGA makes $1.5billion a year. 25 tournaments at 10 million a piece equals $250 million maybe $200 million to charity. So where does the othe $1 billion dollars go? Wasn’t there a major happening back in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s where there was squabble that turned into something major. The players thought they had the freedom to choose to play in any tournament they wanted. Apparently the PGA had other ideas, and they tried to force the better players (or more famous ones) to play in certain tournaments to oblige the sponsors. A compromised was reached and players had to play in certain tournaments within a certain time frame (or in a number of years). Why can’t there be some kind of compromise here?

Everybody forgets the name Curt Flood. He’s the guy that got started all the free agency in sports. These guys are just doing what they want to do. They are not turning their backs on the PGA Tour, the tour is turning its back to them. All someone needs to do is take them to court for the right to play wherever they want. That’s what the tour is afraid of, they know they will lose in court. These guys r independent contractors and can play where they choose to! Love this drama finally gets to golf!!!

    • Scott F

PGA Tour has a solid case good luck in court!

    • Yourewrong

      Jun 11, 2022 at 8:41 pm

Sorry man, as independent contractors they signed a contract that clearly states what other events and Tours they are allowed to play/apply for exemptions to play in in order for them to obtain the privilege of being contracted by the Tour so they can play on it.

They’ll get dunked in court, they know this, which is why the majority have resigned their membership.

If I want to go be a contractor for a certain company and they say we will employ you but you can’t do the same work for our direct competitors while contracted to us, and I agree, it is pretty clear what happens if I don’t follow that. These Tour pros are no different.

The Tour isn’t doing anything wrong. They didn’t try to force people to stay, they said go ahead you can’t play here if you do though, remember you agreed to that. Seems pretty fair and a decent example of a free market.

No one would have any real issue with this if LIV Golf had a different financial backer without such horrific human rights abuses. I’d be all for the actual golfers making more of the money they are the primary drivers of earning, I just don’t support them blatantly letting Saudi sportswash their reputation as they attempt to make everyone forget they chop up foreign reporters who report only the truth about their abuses with bonesaws.

If LIV Golf was funded differently it would still be within the Tour’s rights to say them or us, as it is in the contracts as independent contractors.

        Jun 17, 2022 at 2:16 pm

Thats the problem – there is a fine legal line between employees and IC’s and in a lot of ways the Tour has crossed that. They want to control them like employees, but call them IC’s for $$$$ reasons

A lot of accurate comments on here about the US carrying on relationships with many morally questionable countries. That’s obviously not what the push back from the PGA tour is about.

Let’s just say the money didn’t come from the Saudis but instead an extremely honourable source from Silicon Valley or a church group or whatever just good honest people… do you really think the PGA would then just roll over and let their top talent come and go without a fight? Absolutely not!! They would find a different narrative but the fight would be the same. They love their current monopoly

Kicking the press-credentialed Alan Shipbuck out, while a smirking Greg Norman watched. Attracting some of the most non-credible and press-uncooperative players in the world; Reed, DeChambeau, Johnson.

There’s really strong whiff of “We’re fighting the fake media” with this enterprise and it is going to get exponentially worse when LIV Golf takes its show to Trump National venues.

Brandel works for Golf Channel, a subsidiary of NBC. Why doesn’t he speak out about “sportswashing” of China’s human rights abuses? Maybe it’s because the people who give him a paycheck are profiting off of China. How much wall-to-wall coverage of China’s human rights issues did NBC provide during their multi-billion investment in Olympics coverage? Where were Chamblee’s attacks on the Olympians who would dare to show up in China and add legitimacy to that regime? Or, let’s talk about the NBA’s “sportswashing” of China. I’m waiting for Brandel to publicly attack LeBron for his sucking up to China. Where was Brandel’s defense of Daryl Morey who dared to speak out against China? When is Brnadel going to do a piece on the jailed and disappeared journalists in China?
Simple fact: our Infotainment Corporations that run sports coverage and news and entertainment all are reliant on China, but have no similar financial arrangement with Saudi. If Chamblee’s paycheck was coming from Saudi money instead of China money, his coverage would be a little different. Hypocrites, all of them.

Yes it is hilarious. I am no fan of the Saudis but the USA and UK have had a close relationship with them for 60 years. The Chinese communists have more human rights abuses but golf has loads of gear and clothes made in China. Any of it with slave or prison labor? How much do they pay people making PGA brand clothing? 4 cents a shirt?

I view LIV as a tour in between the PGA and Senior/Champions Tour. A tour for guys between 35 to 50 to sock away some extra money for retirement. The golfers here getting all upset. It opens up more slots for guys to make a living playing golf around the world. The PGA should have spread a bit more money on the feeder tours. Loads of guys folding shirts in some clubhouse like Poulter did, may have a chance to play and make a living.

What major did Monahan win? Where is the most current financial or tax returns for the PGA? Last one was 2017 where Jay was making $3.9 million. Guys in the bag room are making minimum wage. Jay reminds me of Judge Smails. “Shine those shoes with your finest chamois.” Big phony like Brandel and Shipnuk.

This is something that you’re actually able to criticize and that is why Brandel is saying it(and everyone else for that matter) – simply to status signal. Homosexuality is uniquely a “western thing” even though if voted on by the entire country would be outlawed. People that want to be the moral arbiter and promote homosexuality because it’s the high status take disseminated by the highjacked dominance apex.

Put simply: They’re using the “moral” argument as a proxy to channel frustration from the players that decided to leave.

Brandel is the new Johnny Miller! A wasted talent given a platform, who if his check wasn’t coming from NBC would be a Division 2 golf coach. Brandel won one tournament on I think a weak field, major week event ! But yet he extols the virtue of the golfing world.

Brandel is just pro death penalty, the Saudis commuted the death penalties for the 5 agents who killed Khashoggi to 20 years. Didn’t know that? not helpful to the narrative. The pros who took the money have set themselves up for life, and will never need to play anywhere else again. Look up “right to work”, Nascar, USAC and many other organizations have already lost this lawsuit, if the players even care after the checks clear.

      Are you freaking kidding me?

Commuted the death penalty for hitmen that the guy who commuted the penalty hired in the first place? You really want to use that as a defense?

Man is that one of the most pathetic excuses.

And in case you didn’t notice it no one is stopping them from working. They can play golf anywhere the want if they follow the rules of the sponsoring organization.

You’re not a labor lawyer so I would stay away from the “right to work” stuff. It is so inapplicable as toby laughable that you played that card.

When the guy who hired the hitmen commutes their death penalty sentence that shows compassion, kindness and understanding?

      Wow. Interesting spin on morality.

How much $ did Phil make the pga tour ?

JT is really sounding weasely. Daddy was a golf pro and I had the best access to becoming a golfer. Phil was one of the biggest draws for the past 30 years. Signing autographs for kids for hours after every round. He was one of the best ambassadors for the game. His gambling stuff he should have nipped in the bud years ago but besides that a fan favorite. Geez – even NY golf fans love the guy.

Chamblee is so upset because he wishes he was in on the take and is extremely bitter about it.

  43. Ned

    Jun 10, 2022 at 6:24 am

Chamblee needs to shut up here’s a guy that won one tournament in his life and now talks like his the all seeing all knowing about golf. This statement “Watching these players come together for money and show to the world…they are showing us that they are the greediest, most self serving, self interesting, wilfully blind players in the world of golf today.” alone speaks volumes as to his tunnel vision. He should look in the mirror to see the person he is describing. He knows if he spoke positive about LIV he would probably lose his job.

    • Tom Przybylowicz

      Jun 10, 2022 at 7:53 pm

Exactly. Why does anyone think Chamblee is significant at all? You talk about wanting to puke? Listen to his sniffling drivel during the TPC and his bitching about the 17th hole during less than stellar playing conditions and you can appreciate the wanting to puke comment. Brandel, you no play the game, you no make the comments.

The hilarious reason why Kevin Kisner asked to sit the afternoon at the 2017 Presidents Cup

Golf is changing, as always.

While the best of the team events – the Ryder and Presidents Cup – give rookies the chance to shine, both events often rely on the experienced players to steady the ship through the early stages.

This week’s Presidents Cup is the 12th run-out of the U.S v International match-up, and the first since 2019.

The 2021 event was, of course, cancelled because of Covid and the teams look very different to how they may have looked a year ago, mainly because of the ineligibility of any players that have chosen the LIV path for their recent careers.

Played at Quail Hollow this season, the teams are a mix of the plainly obvious and those with zero experience, with 14 of the 24 players making their debuts in the event, including world number one Scottie Scheffler and Max Homa, winner of the 2019 Wells Fargo Championship.

It’s often best to turn to the older members for the stories, and 38-year-old Kevin Kisner has never been short of a tale or two.

With an enviable record at the World Matchplay – one win and two finals appearances in six starts – Kiz appears the type to thrive at all aspects of the team challenge. However, back on his 2017 Presidents Cup debut, he wanted to be left off the roster for day three.

His event started brightly for the rookie, when playing alongside Phil Mickelson, a Thursday half in the foursomes followed by a win in the following day’s fourballs.

Day three again started well for the pairing, beating Jhonattan Vegas and Emiliano Grillo 2&1 and taking their record to 2-1-0, before that strange request.

Golf writer Brentley Romine posted a tweet on Thursday revealing that Kisner approached the then U.S captain Steve Stricker and asked for Saturday afternoon off, because:

“Because Georgia played Tennessee. Strick is like. ‘Seriously?’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, man, that’s my squad.'”

This is not the first time that golf took a back-seat to a Bulldog game.

In the same year, while competing at the Tour Championship, Kisner took to social media to arrange a flight to a Georgia-Mississippi game, eventually finishing tied third at the lucrative season finale.

The mid-event break clearly does him good as he also profited at Liberty National, halving his Sunday singles game with Anirban Lahiri and keeping intact an undefeated record as his team thrashed the Internationals 19-11.

Kisner didn’t take part in the opening day of this year’s Presidents Cup and there is no knowing whether he will play when Davis Love requires him to. Better check the football schedule first.

‘It’s a slap in the face’ – Patrick Reed hits out at DP World Tour over treatment at latest events

This week, Patrick Reed is playing in the Cazoo Open De France at Le Golf National. The course is where the 2018 Ryder Cup was held. The European Team won the trophy, and Reed was only able to muster one point in three matches.

This week however, Patrick Reed was the betting favorite entering play. Despite being somewhat of a regular on the DP World Tour, Reed feels as though the treatment he’s received this week has been “a slap in the face”.

Reed is by far the biggest name in the field, but wasn’t asked to play in the pro-am or conduct a pre-tournament press conference. Of course, this treatment is a result of the 33 year old’s decision to join LIV Golf.

According to The Telegraph, Reed told Journal du Golf: “It’s a slap in the face not to invite me to do a press conference here, or as happened in Wentworth, not to have me play the pro-am and all those things. At the end of the day, it’s just my golf that I have control over. I’m here to support the Tour, France and all the people who are here.”

“But I don’t see why we can’t move from the LIV to the European Tour like we usually move from the PGA Tour to the European Tour. A lot of players understand and support my choice and have nothing against me. I didn’t feel any animosity against me from them.”

While there have been some players who have publicly stated they have no issues with the players who’ve chosen to go to LIV, there have also been a number of players who have done the opposite.

LIV golfers are currently able to participate on the DP World Tour due to a temporary court order until it is resolved legally. A decision on their eligibility going forward is expected to be given in February.

Congress members blast ‘pimp’ Greg Norman in meeting at Capitol Hill

On Wednesday, LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman met with members of congress to discuss LIV’s current dispute with the PGA TOUR.

It didn’t go very well.

According to multiple sources, Republican Tim Burchett of Tennessee walked out of the meeting due to an inability to understand Norman due to his accent as well as the “propaganda” he felt Norman was sharing.

Burchett later sent a tweet himself about the meeting with “The Shark”.

Burchett wasn’t the only member of congress to give Norman a hard time.. Chip Roy of Texas said to reporters of the meeting: “Don’t come in here and act like you’re doing some great thing, while you’re pimping a billion dollars of Saudi Arabian money,”

It’s unclear whether or not any of the lawmakers gave Norman the reception he was looking for, but he did later thank them for meeting with him via an Instagram post.
