‘What a coward you are’ – Lee Westwood slams journalist who ridiculed him amid Saudi links

Published

on

Twitter fights are becoming more common place in the golf sphere and this week was the turn of Lee Westwood and Golf Digest’s Senior Writer Joel Beall who traded insults on the social media platform.

It all began when while criticizing Greg Norman and LIV Golf Investments, Beall took shots at Lee Westwood and Jason Kokrak, two men who have been heavily linked to the Saudi-backed golf league.

Lee Westwood took exception to Beall’s tweet and called out the journalist for not tagging himself or Kokrak in the original tweet, branding him as “ageist” and a “coward”.

After seeing Westwood’s tweet, Kokrak chimed in as well.

Beall then replied, but subsequently deleted the tweet. Twitter users surmised that Beall’s response referenced Westwood’s reported flirtation with the Saudi breakaway league.

After deleting his tweet, Beall offered a sort of apology. Many twitter users took issue with the fact that his “apology” included a massive “spin zone” again which made the apology seem insincere.

It all seems to have calmed down for now, but with the SGL recently announcing its schedule for 2022, you can be sure that the next social media storm won’t be too far off.

What happens when you’re not athletically inclined? Why you go to journalism school to write about athletes, of course. When you’re called out for inappropriate tweets, you make a back handed apology then immediately turn attention away from your ineptitude and onto another pressing subject you’ve never written about or understand.

“Disgusting”, Oh really? You can’t cancel. You paid until it runs out. Stop the drama queen routine. Beall took a shot he shouldn’t have and then mad it worse with a stupid remark. That’s all it is.

Westwood is a long time drama queen himself who has underperformed for most of his career. If he can’t take it, perhaps he needs to consider joining the Pro Ping Pong Tour.

Westwood and you need to grow up.

Ah yes, another media hack who hides behind a keyboard to disparage others.

The PGA Tour and their media hacks have zero moral high ground, after all, the PGA Tour honored a convicted felon, drug addict, and women’s abuser, George Floyd, with an honorary tee time. So much for morality!

The PGA Tour has become a disgusting organization while hiding behind so-called charitable activities.

Perhaps it is time to strip the PGA Tour from their 501c status and treat it for what it is, big business.

I get the concern about Saudi human rights abuses. But what about China? There is actually a PGA Tour-China. What makes this PGA Tour-China ok if the Saudi league is unacceptable? I am not defending the Saudi backed league. Just wondering why the selective outrage over human rights abuses. Hard to out-do China in the human rights abuses category. Mr. Beall?…

    • Shane Quimby

      Mar 18, 2022 at 10:11 am

You are thinking along the same lines as me. China is as bad or worse than anyone with regards to human rights, but we all just look the other way because they provide cheap consumer goods. Pathetic.

      • geohogan

        Mar 19, 2022 at 9:56 pm

@SQ. The US market made China the economic success it is today, because US consumers love cheap junk.. cant get enough, which according to BS aka brian stowell, makes the USA as pathetically abusive as Saudia Arabia.

Who closed their factories so their owners could made a bigger profit margin? Sold out American workers for more money… just as professional golfers are doing to the PGA..greedy scumbags, will come home in suitcases. Insanity: doing the same things and expecting a different outcome.

Anyone playing the whatabout game misses the point. Just because there are other offenders doesn’t mean you let them all off the hook. China isn’t trying to start a golf league to cleanse its reputation. Westwood and Kokrak just need to man up and admit they value the money more than human rights. Stop with the “grow the game” BS.

China? What about the US? Invading Iraq under the false pretense of WMD’s? Hundreds of thousands dead. Abandoning the people of Afghanistan into the hands of the Taliban? There are few governments, if any, without blood on their hands.

This is a perfect example of why society has devolved to the point it has to date. Beall was way off base with his tweet! Disparaging someone and calling it humor is ridiculous. But trying to deflect and use “atrocities around the world” as cover for a glaring blunder is unspeakable. Kokrak kinda nailed it. Don’t say anything on social about someone else that you wouldn’t say to their face.

‘Bye Bye Cheat!’ – Tour pro blocked on Twitter by Patrick Reed after shovel jibe

Published

on

@PReedGolf – probably the cause of more ‘blocks’ on Twitter golf than any other is at it again.

As one of the more recent recruits to the LIV Golf Series, Reed has once again opened himself up to criticism, a factor of his career for many years.

On this occasion, Reed tweeted an offer for tickets to this week’s second LIV event in Portland, an offer that was re-tweeted by DP World Tour pro Mike Lorenzo-Vera with the comment, “Does this code works if I want to buy a shovel ???”

The comment refers to an incident at the 2019 Hero World Challenge when Reed was accused of brushing away sand from behind his ball in a bunker, and didn’t go down well with those that run the former Masters champion’s Twitter – they blocked him.

The move didn’t bother Lorenzo-Vera. He went straight back with, “Well… that was fast! Bye bye cheat!”

Support was there. Popular on-line commentator group ByTheMinute (Non LIV) Golf said, “Love this MLV but everyone else is blocked already,” but one respondent took the opportunity to cast doubt on the new PGA/DP Tour alliance by accusing, ” Have some self respect instead rather than praising a decision to iron out the fact the Euro Tour will be now on par with the Korn Ferry.” Ouch.

Most recently, a press conference held at Pumpkin Ridge saw Reed, Brooks Koepka and Pat Perez face a barrage of awkward questions from reporters, and the answers given certainly have received little approval. The irony, of course, being that Koepka was quite happy to accuse his fellow LIV player of cheating at that event in 2019.

The LIV Golf Invitational Portland starts tomorrow and Reed plays with Perez, Talor Gooch and Dustin Johnson as the ‘4 Aces GC’ team, whilst Koepka captains ‘Smash GC’, comprising his brother Chase and DP World Tour winners Richard Bland and Adrian Otaegui.

‘He can think whatever he wants’ – Brooks Koepka responds to McIlroy’s duplicitous claim

Published

on

From popular four-time major winner to “full villain”, Brooks Koepka has certainly not held back with his view on moving full-time to the LIV Tour.

At the US Open, he lambasted reporters for asking questions about the league, saying he simply wanted to concentrate on his golf at Brookline, and yet soon after he deleted any connection to the PGA Tour from his Twitter account, prompting Rory McIlroy to call the group of rebels “duplicitous.”

Following yesterday’s LIV press conference, social media, and Twitter in particular, has gone haywire.

No Laying Up reports on the Koepka’s comment, “You guys will never believe me, but we never even had the conversation (on LIV) until after the U.S. Open,”  and questions, “So the conversation *began* on Monday, June 20, and his twitter profile was scrubbed the same day?”

Why has Koepka agreed to join the LIV series as opposed to staying with the PGA Tour?

“Having more breaks, having … more time at home to make sure I’m 100% before I go play an event. I don’t feel like I’m forced to play right away.”

As one Twitter user pointed out, Brooks has “played 10 days of golf in three months.”

As for his response to Rory’s comments, Koepka does show some respect for play of the recent Canadian Open champion, if not his views.

“Look, I got respect for Rory as a player. He’s good. He’s phenomenal. I’ll be honest with you. I didn’t see it (the “duplicitous” comment). I didn’t hear about it until basically like a day ago.

So, look, he’s entitled to his opinion. He can think whatever he wants. He’s going to do what’s best for him and his family, I’m going to do what’s best for me and my family and can’t hate on anybody for that, and like I said, opinions change.”

Bob Irving, the ‘voice of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ wasn’t shy in giving his view on the presser:

“Just watched the LIV pressers with Perez, Reed, Koepka, who basically all said they’re glad they don’t have to COMPETE for their money anymore because so many millions are GUARANTEED by the Saudis. What a bunch of losers.”

The second LIV event starts tomorrow at Pumpkin Bridge, Portland opposite the John Deere Classic and Irish Open, and the controversy looks as if it’s not going to die down quite yet.

LIV stars give bizarre non-answer to Chamblee’s prize money claim before moderator steps in

Published

on

There has been much debate in regard to whether the LIV Golf Series players get to keep their prize money, or if the tournament winnings come out of their signing bonus.

The rumblings began when Golf Channel’s Brandel Chamblee claimed that Charl Schwartzel “didn’t actually win 4.7 million for his victory at LIV Golf’s inaugural event at the Centurion Club.

(Note: This tweet has now been deleted by Chamblee)

Former Tour caddie Michael Collins responded to Chamblee’s claim, stating that he was lying about the subject.

On Tuesday’s pre-tournament press conference for LIV Golf Portland, Brooks Koepka was asked to clarify whether or not the prize money was in addition to the signing bonus, strangely responding “I don’t know — it’s irrelevant”

Q. It’s been reported by people that there is a — your signing bonuses versus the draw, meaning what you win comes out of your signing bonus or vice versa. That’s supposedly in your guys’ contracts. Can you confirm if that’s actually true or not?

Koepka: That’s not — no. No.

Q. Just to confirm, Brooks, you’re saying it’s not the case?

Koepka: No. I don’t know — it’s irrelevant.

Q. Okay. And the rest of you guys?

Perez: (Shook head).

Q. The only reason I ask you is because both Keith Pelley, Jay Monahan and you can name other people keep saying that we’re miss- reporting stuff all the time, and the reason is is because every time we ask a question we can’t get answers or people don’t want to talk about the specific issues. That’s why I’m asking.

Koepka: I heard that rumor on Monday morning at the U.S. Open. I also heard I was in London on Saturday or Sunday before. I mean, that was on Monday. Just saying. You can’t believe everything you hear.

After that the contentious exchange, the moderator entered the conversation to clarify the answer while telling the three LIV players they should know since it’s in their contract.

Moderator: I just wanted to address Alex’s question earlier when you were asking about the prize purses and if they are in addition to the contracts. The prize purses are in addition to. There is no draw at LIV Golf on any finances.

Perez: Chamblee was banging that drum the other day.

Moderator: We just wanted to, on the record, it’s in addition to. And while you guys have, this is your first event, but you should know that from your contracts. You can attest to it. Thank you guys.
